Mounted drives in top menubar rather than on desktop?

Is there a way to have mounted external drives show up as icons in the top menu bar rather than as icons on the desktop?

There may be a utility that does this but I'm not aware of one. You could try dragging the drives out of the /Volumes folder to the right side of your dock - I've got my /Volumes folder in my dock so when I click it, it fans out in stack format with the volumes listed there

To get to the /Volumes folder

Finder>Go>Go to Folder, enter /Volumes, and a Finder window will open it
