Firmware 2.0 Allows Secure Erase of iPhone

Appleinsider is reporting (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/25/secure_data_wipe_built_into_iphone_software_v2_0.html) that the latest iPhone 2.0 Firmware betas are offering a more extensive "Erase" function for users. There have been concerns and reports that the current method available to users in Firmware 1.1.4 does not completely erase your personal data from the device.

The new firmware's erase function is said to be more complete and can take up to one hour.

i wonder if this will the be same thing as the remote wipe? and will everyday people be able to remote wipe their phone? (non business)

This will make selling 1 gen iPhones worry free. Just be sure to fully charge the battery before performing 'Secure Erase,' as it can take up to an hour. (or more, depending on how much content you have in the flash drive)

They also swapped Reset Network Settings and Reset Keyboard Dictionary. Makes sense, as people probably need to change networking settings more often than keyboard. Interesting that they're fine tuning things just so.

This makes people worry a whole lot less and hopefully it will do all that it states. I just hope that people don't forget to do this!

So how long did erasing settings/data take before?

Just wondering, since it doesn't look like much has changed, other than adding the "This will take about an hour." Hopefully it's truly better erasing of data, and not just Apple clarifying how long the process usually takes...

In 1.1.4, it takes about 5 to 7 minutes and I was at about 70% capacity. I know because I did it about 2 days ago.

that's all fine 'n dandy 'n super duper useful 'n all...but wake me up when the copy/paste ability and a flash player have been enabled!!! Until then I'm going back to sleep until July 11 when I'll have to stand in a line for 3 hours (conservatively and positively thinking) only to find that they've run out of white 16GB Iphone 3Gs. Ugh.

By the way...regardless if white or black, anybody else plan on giving their shiny new phone the white glove treatment (uh, literally, remember those white gloves from high school marching band LOL)?! Because the likelihood of finding THE perfect case on day 1 will basically be slim to none. Or am I the only obscessive compulsive personality type that posts to these threads? Hmmm...

I believe this will be a Microsoft Exchange Server feature only. I think I remember reading a regular End User will not have this option.

I agree. I don't care if I can do it myself, but it would be nice if AT&T could do it for me. I'm starting to store my whole life on the darn thing. Sure, it's PIN protected, but how secure is that really? I doubt the data is actually encrypted (does anyone actually know?). It would be awesome if I could call up AT&T and say "I can't find my phone, wipe it!" If I find it later, I've always got my iTunes backup from my last sync.

If you're still sleeping just a friendly reminder and FYI tht copy/paste is in iPhone's iOS!!!! Although, no Flash yet… but with evolving tech and html5 does it still matter??
