iPhone 3G will be available in the US on July 11 for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 8GB model and $299 (US) for the 16GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail stores and requires a new two year contract with AT&T for qualifying customers. iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes® 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers. It does mean it won't be this Friday, but it doesn't mean a "firm" date. It says "or later".
I think that would be a big mistake, but I would guess they're just covering their bases.

Meaning that are covering themselves in case the build number changes,
(i.e. it is actually iTunes 8.0 that is released July 11th).

I highly doubt they would release it earlier than the 11th. My guess is they are going for big iPhone impact on the 11th with the release of the 3G iPhone and 2.0. They want to make hype for the day and make it exciting.

Because there is a lot more discussion if the date is only speculative, and more discussion means more base for their product, that is why the date was buried in a Press Release, and not on their front page.

I would think not, it will probably be the same day. 1.1.3 was released at the same time for the iPhone and the iPod touch and the touch users had to pay. The cost of having them pay is to protect Apple legally. There is not justified reason for there to be different release dates for the touch's 2.0 and the phone's.

I don't think that there will be much of a server overload, there wasn't one from what I remember when 1.1.3 was released, and I don't see there being one when 2.0 comes around. Apple has been prepared and will be prepared for this.

Why, because all the new iPhone 3G customers who already have iPhone OS 2.0 will be rushing out to get...what exactly? ;-)
(Also, Apple has never had a problem with software downloads, between services like Akamai and Edgesuite. What they've had a problem with is *interactive* web sites in the first few hours after a new service/product launch.)

I don't think he meant server overload from downloading the 2.0 software, but rather overload from downloading apps from the App Store. That's my concern as well, and why I was hoping 2.0 would be released prior to the 3G phone.

Has Apple mentioned anything about getting this update on iPods Touch in countries where you can't open an iTunes Store account? The iPod is sold in certified stores here, I didn't import it and i want to pay for the upgrade. But there doesn't seem to be any way to actually do this. People have tried by purchasing gift cards, but Apple removed their accounts.
Too bad this can't be done simply by buying a one-use code with PayPal or something as widely available .

I really think anyone who's thinking about upgrading is doing it simply for the 3G speeds and/or GPS, and they're going to upgrade no matter what anyway. I doubt having the 2.0 software, which they know they're getting no matter what phone they have, would deter from upgrade sales.

"Finally, we've heard that some locations (such as early reviewers) have already been seeded with the iPhone 3G in anticipation of the upcoming launch."
Umm - I could have told you that a LONG time ago. The radio station here in DFW (106.1) has been giving them away. It started on the 14th. Yes, they were actually giving away 3G iPhones on the 14th of June. And yes, you just went and picked it up - it wasn't some guarantee of one - they actually had about 50 of them (at least it seemed that way since they were giving one about about every hour all weekend long). I think they may have run out tho since I haven't heard anything about them giving them out this weekend :(

Think of it as a stop-gap. I'd bet there'd be a fair number of people who would be so happy with the Apps they'd just wait for the 32GB version/price drop that's certain to happen around Christmastime.
I, for one, might actually end up doing that as I'm going out of town the weekend of release so I won't be able to buy one until long after I've downloaded and installed the 2.0 software.

That's the press release from the day that the 3G phone was announced: June 9th
During the actual keynote, if I remember correctly, Jobs said that the firmware would be available at the end of June.
It's possible that the press release written there was making a generalization about that date. If they knew ON JUNE 9th that the official release date for the firmware would be July 11th, they would most likely have just said that July 11th is the official 3G iphone AND 2.0 firmware launch date. But he made it a point to say it would be available at the end of June....so there is still hope for tomorrow.
(does anyone have the quote from that day? I know I read it in live updates but couldnt find it in a quick google search)
According to news today, the firmware is in its final form.
I am sick of waiting. I thought it was going to hit right after that keynote. Lets keep our fingers crossed for tomorrow.
Also let's not forget that graphic from Aussie Apple that said June 27th....

Yea, as much as I like to think 2.0 is a nice present from Apple to me, on my birthday, I'm more interested in how soon after it'll be jailbroken, so those of us who need disk-access & whatnot can move forward as well.
I recall there was talk of iphonedevteam already hacking 2.0 in the early days of the sdk, so I wonder if Apple will be able to throw a wrench in there at the last minute and set it all back a few weeks, or if we'll have a same day hacked release of 2.0 compatible w/appstore already worked out...
Getting the best of both worlds will make this a great device.

you mean there are things unrelated to the iPhone?!? Blasphemy! Everyone know everything is related to to the iPhone! </sarcasm>
Kidding aside, people try to hype the iPhone so much, people ignore Apple's other proxy DTs, even Apple itself. Remember how they delayed LeopArd because of the iPhone? Kinda sad. I'm a techie in an all Mac school district and we have quite a few problems with them because Apple doesn't really have software for the enterprise market. Sure, Apple's putting Exchange support, but that's not enough.

Apple would simply not allow anyone to distribute the 3G iphone early - especially not that early. If they had that many they either stole them or they broke a lot of agreements and their site is down due to lawsuits.
Or just maybe they were winding you up and you fell for it hook line and sinker. Which seems more likely to me.
If it were even possible to get hold of 3G iphones that easily it'd be broken by every rumour site on the planet by now - and people would be getting their hands on them. Apple run a tight ship.. they do *not* give stuff away early.

Nope, did not happen. They were NOT giving away actual iPhone 3Gs. If you look at the rules on their site, they were giving away AT&T gift cards for the upcoming iPhone 3G and misleading the public by calling the contest "Win It Before You Can Buy It." Here's the link:

They had an entire security detail there at the station when they were giving these things away. What is so hard to believe about that? This is a huge business and if you're unaware the FCC actually has false advertisement restrictions so when you say "the brand new iPhone 3G that doesn't go on sale until the 11th of July" you can't give people a version 1 phone... You're suggesting that Apple, since they need to improve awareness on the gadget that everyone knows about, is going to give 50 units of the most wanted gadget on the planet ... to an old-media establishment like a radio station? Radio is dying, my friend. They don't have sway anymore. People read the internet. There are better venues Apple could choose to improve awareness.
That's like Tom Cruise promoting his latest action flickr at the 7-Eleven. Apple and radio stations aren't even in the same league.
Apple doesn't need to improve awareness. The iPhone is bigger than any radio station. Apple is going to sell every 3G iPhone without giving any of them away. Because it's the friggin iPhone and everyone knows about it and everybody wants it, and they don't need some podunk failing media establishment to sell them.
Summarization: radio is dying, the iPod killed it, and it's laughable to suggest Apple needs radio to help them sell iPhones.

I wouldn't be so quick to declare radio dead - last time I checked your iPod doesn't give you traffic updates (I have an iPhone and no, google traffic is way behind compared to the radio updates), weather updates (again, iPhone, not really that great since it doesn't even give % chance of rain), news, etc. In fact I know of only 1 person who doesn't listen to the radio on their drive into work. Now most people don't sit around and listen to the radio when they are at home or listen to it at work - that's where the iPod excels but in terms of the daily commute, Radio is by far still #1 and it's not even close.
Considering the listening audience for the particular station I'm talking about I'd say they get far more exposure by giving some to Kiss FM than they did for giving one to Stephen Colbert...
Apple *needs* radio to help them just as much as they *need* TV advertisements...
And yes, I saw the link saying they were giving away certificates - my bad :)

Sure, during commutes radio wins. However, for traffic information mobile devices could do way more then radio ever could. Only a question of time before the iPhone (or other devices) have advanced real time traffic information and will help you navigate around traffic with GPS.
You can't compare Colbert to a 1 state radio station. They don't even come close in ratings. Not sure if Apple really did give Colbert a 3G iPhone, but if they did its a smart move, Colbert has a huge following. Hell, they are naming a spider after him LOL.
Sure, Apple needs TV ... but sure as hell doesn't need radio. If Apple wanted to increase exposure by contests before the release of the device, they sure as hell aren't going to use a radio station. Not to mention, I have a hard time believing Apple would want 3G iPhones released to the general public before July 11th. (in any fashion)

I'd check the link but, again, it's blocked - lucky me.
Well I suppose they technically did win it before they could buy it - they just aren't allowed to pick them up yet. ;)
Either way it's still a free iPhone and I'd take it in a heart beat.
Dude, you just edited this WHOLE post, didn't you? Don't worry about your handle - I won't plonk you ;) - but I'm never listening to a ClearChannel station again ;)
Cheers,

I wouldn't be so quick to declare radio dead
I definitely would.
last time I checked your iPod doesn't give you traffic updates (I have an iPhone and no, google traffic is way behind compared to the radio updates)
Great, so what you're saying is Radio is perfect for the 5 minute traffic report, and then you can go back to listening to music you picked yourself instead of some mega corporation? Oh wait, what about this (http://traffic.dynadel.com/)?
weather updates (again, iPhone, not really that great since it doesn't even give % chance of rain)
Almost forgot weather. Because I can't get (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/iphone/weather/) chance of rain on my iPhone. (FYI precipitation = chance of rain).
news
Haha. Yeah, right. There's absolutely (http://www.apnews.com/) no way (http://digg.com/iphone#_stories) to get news on the iPhone.
Seriously, I've just googled "iphone traffic report", "iphone weather" and "iphone news" and found those. Surely you know how to use Google. And even if people don't have an iPhone, your whole argument on why this music radio station is relevant is because of their non-music segments. Kinda ironic, don't ya think? Kiss1061 is relevant because they can recite weather and news you can get from other sources? How sad! Anyways, once people get to work, they just browse the internet, read news, myspace, etc. So is radio really that crucial when almost everyone has internet access?
In fact I know of only 1 person who doesn't listen to the radio on their drive into work. Now most people don't sit around and listen to the radio when they are at home or listen to it at work - that's where the iPod excels but in terms of the daily commute, Radio is by far still #1 and it's not even close.
Ah, the old "everyone I know is doing it". Not a sound logical argument.
Less people are listening to the radio, you know it, I know it. It was an exciting media in the 40's, and it's day has come and past.
Considering the listening audience for the particular station I'm talking about I'd say they get far more exposure by giving some to Kiss FM than they did for giving one to Stephen Colbert...
Yeah, I'm sure that's why Richard Dawkins, Michelle Obama, Larry King, John Kerry, Sean Penn, Mike Huckabee, Ron Paul, Toby Keith, Judd Apatow and Barry Manilow were all interviewed at Kiss1061FM instead of the Colbert Report. Oh wait! They weren't. They were interview on the Colbert Report because no one has heard of Kiss1061FM outside of Texas.

I wonder if there is any chance that MobileMe will be released earlier than July 11th. I am just so excited to play with it. If it turns out to be really good I will upgrade my account to a family pack and make sure everyone in my family uses it!

Wow, for once Apple is making a mistake. There sales expectations on the first Iphone fell short. What makes them think they will sell MORE of a model that does not offer much more than the first one??

So what about all of the 3G phones that are "being seeded to reviewers" and have already been shipped to stores? What build of OS 2.0 are they running if the OS is still in development, with the GM build declared tomorrow?

They'll be running the last beta. When the phone is first plugged into itunes it'll probably pop up 'your phone needs an update for the latest cool features' or something like that, and update to 2.0 release automatically.

There has been topics in, I believe, the iPhone subsection about the release date. Also, someone posted saying something about the chances of it being released this Friday.

I was wondering about the wisdom in releasing all the various software updates at the same time, ie whether their servers could handle it. But giving it some thought, the extra traffic is probably a drop in the ocean over their normal requirements (their main websites, online stores, iTunes, .Mac etc) and will easily be covered by the spare capacity they will have to cover busy periods.
If there was a bottle neck it would most likely be bandwidth and it would be easy for them to rent some extra to cover the launch period.

We all get our hopes up, but the reality is that he gave this date out at the WWDC, and as pointed out it's in the press release.
It reminds me of all the hype of the 1.1.2 1.1.3 etc, upgrades... Everyone was like "is it this Tuesday?!!?!?!!"
I guess it just goes to show how much we like our little buddy.

It's more likely to be in the afternoon than midnight. I can't remember Apple ever doing anything at midnight (& midnight Cupertino time is 3AM Eastern anyway).

So, you are saying with the price of $199, 3G, GPS *AND* 3rd party apps ... they aren't going to sell more ?! You also don't think that is a huge upgrade over the first one ?!

They use Akamai ... which already delivers an unbelievable amount of traffic per month. Strangely, this release is a drop in the bucket for them.
However, I am not sure how well Apple.com is going to hold up during this. They don't appear to use Akamai for that. I really hope they double up their infrastructure.

that and the fact that 3G opens it up to way more countries and the rollout is more or less global now

How did sales expectations for the first model fall short? Apple said that their goal was to sell 10mil iPhones before the end of 2008. As of mid-May (when the supply of the G1 iPhone dried up) they had sold just over 6 million units, at that rate they would have projected total sales of just over 10mil by the end of 2008. Add to this picture the allure of an updated OS, new apps, and expanded sales to 70 countries, and there's no way Apple wouldn't have sold another 4mil phones in the next 6 months, even if there was no 3G coming out.

I think that it's just weird that they didn't say that they were going to release it a little before July 11th BECAUSE... in the keynote, Steve Jobs said that the iPhone 3G would be available on July 11th, but when he talked about 2.0 software, he said it would be released EARLY JULY....i just think that's kinda weird..

When the iPhone first came out it was "discovered" in web logs along with software version identifying information. Have iPhone 2 sightings occurred yet in web logs? If reviewers and testers have had it for quite while one presumes that would be the case.

Yeah, it really sucks. With all the people activating iPhone 3G's, and upgrading to the official 2.0 at the AT&T Store (presumably) along with iPhone/ iPod touch users upgrading to 2.0 and buying Apps.
I probably won't be able to get v2.0 till midnight like last time :( Hopefully the App Store won't go down, SMB, Free Remote App, and many more here I come!

this is actually a test for edgesuite (run by akamai) because apple uses these servers to host their downloads. if edgesuite survives, then they know they are well. if they dont, they needa upgrade their servers.
