new HD for iMac Flower Power

I hope somebody will help me.
I have iMac G3 Flower Power. 500MHz,512MB,20GB HD.

I wanted to install 40GB hard drive and upgrade OS.
1) I replaces Hard Drive,
2) Booted from exernal HD with OSX 10.4.
3) Held Option key while booting.
4) on screen I got an icon of external HD with OSX.
5) I clicked to install.
6) erased
7) When it said - select destination disc - there was nothing.

So, I was not able to install OSx.

What step did I miss ?
Can somebody help ?

Sorry, I was out of state and did not respon in time!

I really, missed the step of formating the disk. I went to Installer later than I have to - was clicking "continue" instead of go to Installer - Dick Utility.
Now I am OK.
Was able to finish everything !
