Wrong Icon Displayed

I am using OS 10.5.3 on a MacBook Pro.

For some reason this afternoon the Downloads folder in the Dock decided to disappear. Tinking it would be simple to just grag it back down there, I did so from its Home location. It shows up and has the blue folder with the shaded down arrow pic on the folder but seconds later is turns into another app's file icon. I have tried this several times and I get the same result.

Does anyone have an idea what is going on?
 
This sounds stupid, but it sounds like it switched from Folder view to Stack view. Right click it in the dock and select Folder view.
 
do you have something "in" the downloads folder or is it empty?
