Q1 Global PC Shipments Up 12% YoY

Global PC unit shipments rose to 69.9 million units, up 12.1% year-over-year.

H-P started the year on a high note, boosting its first-quarter global PC shipments 23% compared to the same period last year, to reach 13.2 million units.

Dell expanded its market share position half a percentage point sequentially, at 15.4%, with worldwide shipments of 10.8 million units. Company shipments were up 20% year-over-year.

Acer rounded out the Top-3 with unit shipments of 6.8 million units – a figure that includes shipments of recently acquired Gateway and Packard Bell – giving it a global market share of 9.7%.

It's impressive actually to see that kind of YoY growth in this stage of the PC market. HP seems to be doing quite well for itself, in particular. Although, the thing that always impresses me about these stats is how little of the market the top five players control -- by my math, just 55.3% of PCs sold... I think there's still going to be a lot of impetus for consolidation, for good and bad, until that number is somewhat higher... but at the moment, the dinosaurs -- HP and Dell -- who have the relatively strongest positions in the low margin end of the business and are weaker in high margin areas premium priced computers and notebooks -- seem to be doing okay.

The data are probably quite new, I can't find more details, but it is indeed very promising that the whole market is still growing strong.

Desktop PC can be very cheap nowadays, I don't really think big brands have much advantages here. Which I personally like...:)
