Selling my 2.5G iPhone to an existing O2 customer....

Right gang

When the 3G comes out a mate wants to buy my 2.5G iPhone from me. he is an existing O2 punter has a sim etc... the phone is activated obviously.... not hacked in anyway will he just be able to put his SIM in and crack on?

don't know what nickspohn means, but i think you will need to hack it, using something like ziphone or pwnage
 
Why do i need to hack it?

Its activated, he is using an o2 sim.... what will the hacking achieve?
 
Sounds like the OP is a current O2 customer as well, so his question has to do with the new owner switching or placing his own O2 SIM card in the iPhone. I believe the new owner can proceed in that manner, then activate the iPhone via O2. 😎
 
Right for the hard of hearing/reading.

  • I have an iPhone on contract with O2.
  • The phone is not hacked, standard firmware 1.4
  • The phone was activated on purchase via iTunes as normal
  • I will be selling it to a friend who is also an O2 customer but doesn't have an iPhone
  • What is to stop him putting his own O2 sim in the phone and using as normal?
 
i think he will get a message that says "Sim card not recognized, please connect to itunes" on the phone. then he will have to activate there on itunes.

exactly. thats why i said you need to hack it in order to activate it
the iphone is only activated with that one o2 sim card

if he wants to go on an iphone contract, fine no hacking. but if he doesnt, he will need to hack it

No need to hack!!

O2 will allow you to sell your original iPhone on, the new purchaser can if they want go Pay n Go with O2 by getting the SIM card from O2.

Obviously if they don't want to be with O2 for Pay as Go then they will need to hack it.

I asked a similar question of O2 support regarding my iPhone which would be going to my wife. The answer I got back was that it would work with any O2 SIM only contract (i.e. Simplicity) but not any other contract or exisiting PAYG package.

oh interesting, i stand corrected
although it sounds as if they are on o2 and eligible, they have to go on contract
