My motherboard went out on me on my G3 iBook. The shop quoted me at $400 plus to fix. Is this true? Can I fix it myself or at least buy a motherboard and have them fix it. They are saying its $300+ for the board and $100 for the labor. Any ideas?

Doesn't sound that far fetched. Apple logic boards are expensive and paying for professional labour is always expensive.

You'd be much better off using that money on a newer Mac.

Is there a alternative?

Look for a replacement logic board on eBay or somewhere like iFixIt (http://www.ifixit.com/Categories/G3-12-Inch-iBook/50). You are really going to be better in the long run putting that towards 50% (or more) of a new MacBook though...

Yeah if its that much to fix it yeah. The components and labor do truly cost that much. I strongly suggest that you don't try to replace the logicboard yourself either unless you're extremely comfortable working with small electronics. Even I won't touch the internals of an iBook.

Well, you'll either need a working computer or pull the harddrive and attach it to another machine. Of course you should have backups, replying on the disk not dying is a really bad plan.

Ok what about all my itunes and some of the other stuff how do I go about getting that off and putting it on another computer?I've taken iBooks apart (http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/) to salvage their hard drives. I warned their users that they weren't going to have their iBook put back together.
