Of all the Apps available for a Jailbroken iPhone, the one that I personally find to be most useful is Taskbar Notifier.
The fact that there isn't some kind of LED notification on the outside of the iPhone makes this App the next best thing.
Is it possible for it to be made available thru The App Store? Or is this another case of something that runs in the background not being allowed? I'm just not sure how this App actually works.
Thanks for any info!
Copy/Paste would also make my day.

It really doesn't run in the background its just like a voice mail or text message or mail notification once its been activated lets say by a text it just puts a badge on the taskbar and then the running process stops until its next command

you mean like an additional icon where the battery icon is and time?>

i believe theres a jailbreak app in installer that does this for missed calls or something.

could be eidted to work for any app i suppose.

No no he is talking about the Jailbreak application called tasknotifier he hopes its ported over to the appstore

Taskbar Notifier is not (the one that puts envelope and phone next to the battery icon).

The red badge on an Application's icon is definitely possible.

Umm, read the original question again.

He asked whether it was possible through AppStore.

Why is taskbar not possible????? who is to say that a dev is not going to put it on there or at least try?

The app can't "talk" to the other apps for info. It indeed needs to run in the background. It isn't possible with the rules Apple has for apps.

You can tell it runs in the bg because the notification doesn't update at the same time the icon gets badged.

This app is not possible via App Store.

Right and to be activated when we receive an email it must be running in the background?

Yes. The only way to accomplish this without a background application is to rewrite the SMS and Email apps to activate the taskbar app when a new message is received.

an we know thats out of the question lol! well I guess one could only hope but hey we still have the best and hottest phone on the planet!

I wonder why they don't "certify" some apps to be able to run in the background. Just have a disclaimer stating if you put too much crap on your phone it will get slow and buggy.

You see the notifications on the unlock sceen. Much better then having to slide/unlock just to see if I have new mail.

Unfortunately, can't be done. By September, developers will be able to put the red alert numbers/letters by App icons, pop up messages on screen, and have the iPhone make a noise, that's it. Of course, it's a bit of work to do that - since Apple doesn't allow SDK Apps to run in the background, instead the App's developer will have to be running their own server, which will contact Apple's server and tell it to send the iPhone the message. And of course that won't work with basic iPhone things like SMS or email, instead it'll be new things like MMS or reminder services, things like that.
