Hi guys,

I just got a new 1.6 MBA but it is going back tomorrow :o

It has screen bleeding showing like mountains on the bottom and top of the screen. In addition, it is HOT (CPU 63-83 C). Way hotter than what I tested at the store (CPU 40-60 C). In addition, it has a tiny flicked (ripped) paint at the back which I am somehow ok with.

I just wanted to share this with you and know if any of you facing similar issues? I have never ever seen screen bleeding in MBAs before  since the MBA has the "best" screen ever.

I hope that I'll get a better replacement.

In general, the MBA screens are the best I've seen on any laptop ever - really - not joking here. I had to return my original MBA due to charging issue. The screen was flawless. The same can be said about the screen on my replacement MBA. I think you'll be very happy with the screen on the replacement.
I really think the MacBook Air has the least problems out of any modern Apple laptop ever.

Most probably a faulty MBA. Apart from the screen issue, I have never heard of a MBA running that hot. You should take it back and ask for a replacement.

First. I also have a pretty new macbook air.. I opened it a couple days ago and haven't logged much time on it...

I can confirm that out of the box mine ran hot as balls... like seriously i was shocked to see it turn on the first time.. and the fan start screaming like a jet engine... i installed istat pro right away ... it as at 78 degrees C.

Just install the updates... my operating temp is usually in the mid 40's (much better than my white macbook that i'm typing on now)

The screen. I don't know if other people can confirm but... uh... its awesome. It turns on instantly and is brighter than the sun on full brighness... honestly i think that my air at half brightness is just as bright as my macbook at full brightness.... contrast is awesome too..

I've noticed a couple funky things though... I have the charge/tingle problem kinda bigtime... and also maybe you guys can check.. the frame around my screen actually bulges a bit right above the macbook air logo.

you cant tell looking straight on.. but you can see that there is more space in the middle than the sides when looking down from the top of the screen..

Just bought a new 1.8ghz MacBook Air with the 80GB regular (not SSD) drive. Didn't transfer any of my music off my old PB G4 to save space, so there's still like 30 GB available on the hard drive.

It's got 2GB of RAM, so why is it DEATHLY SLOW ??? At first I thought perhaps it was due to running iPhoto w/ other Apps open @ same time, but the worst part of it is that even with nothing else running, iPhoto is running stupid slow. Not only that, but just Mail, moving stuff around on the Finder and using Dock seems like it's in slow-mo.

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm planning to take it in to get checked out, but any suggestions or help ideas !?

Spotlight runs for a while at first and it slows everything down and heats up the MBA.

Of course, this usually only lasts for about 20 minutes.

But it needs to run it's course otherwise it starts over again from the beginning.

The Apple specialist at the store told me that the issues with my screen which he looked at and saw are nothing that would grant an exchange

He was saying that all LEDs are like that

It took me 30 minutes to convince him after betting that non of the 6 MBAs on display has this issue and then the manager agreed to give me a replacement.

Guess what? I checked the replacement in front of the manager and the bottom cover was CRACKED open .

At the beginning, they wanted to charge me a 10% restocking fee to refund me but after seeing how unlucky I am, they decided to give me my money back.

After an hour, I decided to go to the store and try my luck again. Guess what now? The third one had scuffed paint and loose base cover  WHAT a luck. The specialist asked me to come tomorrow to have it replaced since they are about to close and they shutdown their system!

In addition to the MBA, I bought an iMac and guess what again? The iMac is perfect even though it is a W (assembled in China), but the keyboard and mouse are scratched :(

I guess, I should never go to the Apple store myself. I should ask someone to get me whatever I want since my luck is the worst in the world .. damn it!

I am going back to another branch to find a better luck to replace my MBA. I really do not like the fact that my iMac keyboard and mouse are scratched but I am not sure that they would replace them since they might think that I am just a trouble maker or so :o

I have a Week1 or 2 MBA and no problems. I use iStatMenu and temp for web surfing/email is 45-50C. Fans don't kick in unless I start pushing MPG4 video.

No screen issues, better than my MB and MBP.

The store refused to exchange it unless I pay the 10% restocking fee  because they think 3 replacements are too much :(. Is it my problem if I am just unlucky?

Tell em to ******* off. Seriously. If you are within a reasonable distance of another store, take it there. If not, give Apple a call.

I tried for almost two hours but they keep saying that non of our machines are perfect and it would cost us $50,000 to produce a perfect machine

They claim that the issues with my MBA are within Apple's tolerance level

I guess, it is better not to pay full price for a new product from Apple that looks worse than a used DELL

How would calling Apple help?

Thanks :)

I called Apple and they said that they can only repair it for me and if I want a replacement, that can be done through the store only.

Well that's just silly. My MBA is just fine, without any of the flaws you mention.

And all of this damaged hardware is odd, too. Something doesn't sound right wit that store. Where is it? I want to be sure I never to go there.

That is what I figured out because even the iMac box was beaten up  .. I even thought of asking them of getting another one, but I said what I care about is the computer itself not the box :).

What is bothering me the most is the CORE-SHUTDOWN whever I watch a movie :(

The store is in CO :o

I think that store must be the winner of the "biggest a-h0lz" award. I have had some less than satisfactory experiences at the Philly area stores, but your experience sounds downright horrible.

I have never received a less than perfect Apple product out of the box and am really sorry you have had this experience.

As a note to everyone getting a new MBA, or any Apple machine; Spotlight took 8 hours to index all of my files (~30GB). During that time it was extremely hot and so slow it was unusable. Now after all of the updates and such it rarely gets above 65C.

The MBA is not painted, the flecks you see are actually divots in the metal. I have a couple on my lid already too.

Any chance you could post a pic of these? Do they appear over time?

When I buy mine I will be inspecting it's condition right there in the store because I don't want to have to return it - the Cambridge UK store sucks!

Are you suggesting that I should swab my MBA with a MBP for example :D if all MBAs are like that?

Dear,

Tomorrow I will get my third MBA replacement. My former two had both issues, and the metal enclosures where in both cases not perfect. Both have small scratches and imperfecitions in the metal case and other issues. Very lame for an $3000 product. This is not how Apple was 4 years ago, where you get an absolute perfect machine.

It has everything to do with quality control or the lack off....

With kind regards,
Bas

Apple are being cheap. They should replace their machines in China and put more restrict QC rules.

Obviously you never owned a first-gen 12" Powerbook, or a first-gen Titanium Powerbook.

My girlfriend owns a first generation PB12" and it is flawless in working and in quality of the outer case. I owned a first gen PB-alu, also flawless with a perfect outer shell.

With the PB-TI you've got me. That was horrible either with the paint that fell of..

Still even former rev-A products where at least perfect out of the box in cosmetics. Now we deal with MBA's which are damaged out of the box already, or bad cosntructed. That is just bad QC. And that was better in the past. Even the PB-TI came out of the box perfect.

With kind regards,
Bas

I went through three 867 12" PBs and while aesthetically perfect, the case on the first two always warped due to the excessive heat. I always had to bend the case back into straight by twisting it at the corners or the lid would be angled compared to the body. My third one started making groaning noises from the fan because it was on all the time. The lesson I learned was that first-gen, itty bitty metal apple laptops will always have heat issues, and those issues are inconsistent through the model. That's why some people are doing fine and others aren't, but Apple's QA is not noticeably worse today than it was years ago.

Those Ti Books are a nightmare. So good looking and so trouble prone. I had a first gen that a friend still tries to use. We've replaced the hinges twice, it's lost a lot of paint, and the PRAM battery has now been replaced twice. Compared to my Wallstreet, the Ti is a mess, and the Air is nowhere near as bad.
