View Full Version : Thank God for Student Discounts!!!

With the release of AT&T's plans today, my monthly bill is gonna be something like this:

$69.99 (450 anytime, 5,000 night and weekend)
$20 (unlimited text)
$6-$10 (tax. For the sake of calculation, lets say $10)

=$99

99-15% student discount($14.85)

= a reasonable $84.15 a month.

The $10 spike in the data plans and voice plans hurt, but the student discount nearly makes up for it. I'm still a go for Iphone 3G

Anybody else?

i want to do this but for me to get the corporate discount i get for being a summer intern (its a nice 22% discount), then i have to be an account holder. my parents pay for my phone, and they could still do this with me as the account holder but they have to run a credit check on me and since i havent established credit then i would have to pay roughly 300 bucks for the deposit which is refundable, but my parents dont want to do that

If eligible, you'll get an email bringing you to the premiere site, which has a FAN account number on it. I've heard that's all you need, but I'll find out for myself on the 11th.

And yes, Thank God for the discount, I'm actually looking at the exact same plan as you. So clutch.

TIME OUT!

Since when has at&t announced that school / corporate discounts were going to be available for the iPhone? I have a 15% discount that went bye-bye when I got the first iPhone (and quickly reappeared a month ago when I sold it). What makes you think that things have changed?

Yea that's got me a little worried. A woman at AT&T said my discount only counts with VOICE plans. Since the iPhone plan has both lumped together I may have a problem. If they are billed as a voice plan + the iPhone data plan, there shouldn't be any problem getting it applied to at least one portion of the plan.

Well according to the last 5 reps i've talked to at ATT the discounts will apply to the iphone 3g (not phone but monthly bill) because it is now being treated like any other data phone.

I just got off the phone with AT&T and I asked them about adding a iPhone 3G to my family FAN account and the lady said that it would cost me $30 a month to add the data plan (or $45 if I want the corporate plan), so it looks like the discount only applies to the regular rate plan. :( Unless the lady had no idea what she was talking about...but it sounded pretty legitimate. Still the rate plan is pretty reasonable for how many minutes I get (and never use), at least we won't be paying full price for everything.

Hmmm... that is interesting, because I remember last year I was told the discount would apply to my existing voice plan but not the iPhone data plan. But sure enough, even though I only added the $20/mo data plan in addition to the Nationwide 900 minutes plan I lost my voice discount.

I hope things are different this time around, but I would caution people against planning on the discount being there when figuring out their budgets.

yeah but the 15 percent off only applies to teh voice part. so the 69.99 is voice and data. 39.99 is the voice part and the 30 extra is data. apply the discount to the voice, which brings voice to 33.99. then add on the 30 for data. which bring the plan to $63.99. then you can add texting and everything from there. this is just speculative and im not even sure if at&t will take discounts on the iphone plan but i would be stoked if they did

I'm pretty sure you can bring the FAN number to the AT&T store and they will be able to implement it. Or you can apply it afterwards, either way.

And I'm not sure that the discount is only on voice, if you go the the premiere site it will show you prices after your discount. Everything is discounted, including data.

Thanks... I'll write it down just in case and see what they say when I go to pick up the iPhone, but may apply it myself later if it may cause too much fuss in-store so I can be sure to keep things moving, as I'm sure the store will be hectic enough already. If I do end up having to do it later, I hope I can easily do it online instead of having to call AT&T support and discuss it with someone.

Okay I called AT&T again and got everything figured out. The 15% student discount only applies to the monthly voice plan, in my case I have a family plan and it doesn't even apply to the $9.99 for the second line, it does not apply to a data plan for any phone.

The iPhone has certain contractual restrictions that void any business/education discount on the voice or data plan. :( However there is a way to get around this if you have a family plan, if the primary account number is not an iPhone then you still get the discount off of the voice plan, but still nothing for the data plan.

Fortunately for me my wife is the primary and she won't be getting an iPhone. :D The woman I spoke with this time was very familiar with the iPhone plans and I really believe her, but as always this is a forum so take this for what it is worth. She also told me that since I already had an account with AT&T that I could just buy the iPhone and set it up at home. :)

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but my University has a certain discount program set up for students with AT&T which gets us 15% off the voice plan, I think this is a pretty standard deal, but some universities/businesses may have different deals worked out. I believe the iPhone discount nullification applies universally, although I did not ask this explicitly.

yeah i know my university has a similar thing but im just trying to figure out if maybe it will apply to all aspects of the phone plan including data. i have a school discount of 15 percent and work discount of 22 percent but if the school one applies to all aspects but the work only applies to the voice then i may choose to go with the 15 percent

I really don't think it is that bad, but it really depends on what features you use, for me all I care about is the data, I rarely use my phone to call anyone but my wife and I never send text messages (I have them blocked on my line), so I'm glad they didn't increase the data plan cost to include text messages that I wouldn't use. The $30 data plan is pretty standard among smartphones, but it does suck in comparison with the old iPhone plan, the only way it really sucks though is if you live in an area without 3G coverage. Either way I'm happy I have good 3G coverage in my city and if other people don't like what is being offered there will be fewer people in line on the 11th.

Also, don't forget about the poor Canadians (and Australians?) they are getting hosed by their wireless providers too. I bet the carriers know that data usage is going to skyrocket and they know they need to charge more to maintain/upgrade their infrastructure. People in places where 3G is already common will probably get the best deal (Hong Kong) because their providers already have their infrastructure set up. We are just paying the price of being early adopters of technology new to the US that has been available in other countries for awhile.

I went to att today to get "pre-approved" for a new contract. I asked about a corporate discount while I was there, and the rep said that he does not know yet about the discount but thinks there will be a discount. From the mixed signals in the posts it seems to me that att reps have no idea about what is going on with the discount.

However, if the IPhone is to have no "special treatment" like all other smart phones then the discount should apply. That is if att holds true to their word about no "special treatment."

I'm holding off at least a few days before I go get pre-approved for this reason... Although it may be unlikely, my hope is that over the next couple days as people go in to do the credit check, they'll ask these questions, the reps will realize they don't know the answer, and will find out so when I go in and ask, they'll have already done the leg work. That's probably a fantasy, but at least it's not like I'm losing a place in line by waiting a few days to do this.

You'll be able to use your FAN discounts on your 3G-iPhone. The reason you couldn't on the 1st iPhone was because apple was because of the special deal they had with apple.

Now that the iphone is using a NORMAL smartphone pda plan, all discounts apply.

You get a lower percent off on data as you do for voice, but you still get a percent off.

The at&t memo that was leaked a month ago specifically said FAN's will work now.

I'm sure most at&t people you talk to are just reading from an old script that is no longer valid :p

But the old iPhone was not using at&t traditional plans. Now we're using the exact same plans and rates every other phone uses.

I suppose there's a remote chance they still won't apply....but it makes sense why they didn't the first time (you paid 399 for the phone and then another 200-ish to apple over the length of the 2 year contract), and why they should now (you pay 199 for the phone, but apple gets the 599 upfront from at&t....you pay at&t back over 2 years, but at a higher rate).

Update: I e-mailed the guy in charge of my university's discount plan and he said that the the new iPhone is under a new pricing structure so it will be eligible for the FAN discount and I am assuming this applies to the data plan as well, but this maybe different for everyone because it depends on the specific deal that your University/Company has worked out with AT&T. I suppose there's a remote chance they still won't apply....but it makes sense why they didn't the first time (you paid 399 for the phone and then another 200-ish to apple over the length of the 2 year contract), and why they should now (you pay 199 for the phone, but apple gets the 599 upfront from at&t....you pay at&t back over 2 years, but at a higher rate).

yeah, but with it being the iPhone, it's still questionable.

I agree that since it's now using a standard plan that it should apply... and people above are saying the memo from a while back specifically said the FAN discounts would work, so hopefully we won't run into any issues on launch day. I'll certainly be writing down my number to bring with me.

when it says put your email address in i did and it says i qualify..but part of a orginazation i never heard of..im a student in nj and it says im a member of riverside county personnell wtf?

It depends on the last part of your e-mail address, the @'school name'.edu part. Make sure you use your official school e-mail address. But either way if they give you the discount who cares. :p That could also be the organization your school is set up under.

Well glad a could help considering I was waiting there to ask about two or three questions for almost two hours because the reps were super slow "helping people", which seems to be a trend with most att stores I go to. I never knew adding a phone to an account and upgrading a phone, which was being taken care of by two of the reps could take so long.

There are lots of questions regarding the corporate/student discount in this thread as well... http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=508893

We probably just need one thread to keep track of this issue until this is finally straightened out (hopefully before the 11th), so I vote for this thread. Maybe change the title to Student/Corporate discounts :D

depending on your company/school deal with at&t it can apply to any number of things, but most only apply to voice

i just chatted with an at&t rep... they said the same thing... i have a service discount of 22% and it does not apply to data plan and text messaging... so who knows? maybe it varies depending on what kind of discount your company or organization has negotiated... but monthly service discount means voice, data, text to me

The new plans are still only for the iPhone unless they are introducing the new plans along with the iPhone. I checked...AT&T doesn't currently offer any combined voice+data plans for regular phones. Considering today I blocked text messages and asked to have my plan switched to data only with no text I would think they would have offered me the same plan as what I'll be getting on my iPhone 3G. They left my voice plan the same and switched me from a smartphone data+text plan to their MediaNet Unlimited plan which saves me $15 per month. The 450 minute iPhone plan announced today would be perfect for me since I don't need text messages. I'll be keeping the block on text messages for the iPhone too as I don't use them and email is just about as easy. I know it doesn't make much sense to switch now since in less than 2 weeks I'll be switching phones and plans anyway...but I wanted to switch and turn off text messages (in order to do that I had to switch) so I would stop getting spam text messages. Been getting a lot of those lately. Plus I'm all set for next month if anything delays or stops me from getting the iPhone 3G.

Funny...when I talked to the sales rep to get all this done they told me I would have to talk with a store rep about a student discount on the iPhone since that's the only place they are selling them at. So they just didn't have the information I guess and said that to cover up the fact that they had no information.

Discounts are different for all organizations, so just because one person gets a certain discount doesn't mean someone else will. I live chatted with a rep today about my specific situation and this is what she said:

Susannah M: Your monthly service discount will still apply to your rate plan. However, it will not apply to the required 3G iPhone Data Plans.

YMMV.

mntentman
Jul 1, 2008, 10:38 PM
... that said, even AT&T's premier page is inconsistent. I look under family plans and it calculates my 15% discount based on the minutes and two lines on the plan (so, foer example, for 1400 minutes the discount is based on the two-line rate of $89.99). But when I put the plan in the cart it calculates the discount on $80 -- subtracting out the cost of the second line.

All of this crap is SOOO much more complicated than it needs to be! I say that because I feel like my head's going to explode since an AT&T service rep had just been to my father's work and was saying all this stuff that didn't make any sense to me (of course that was being heard second hand. Now this new pricing information comes out?! Ah. I was hoping to buy this thing while on vacation, but now I'm thinking that that is a bad idea. Hmm. I'm thinking I'll have to have mon pere give Mr. ATT-dude another call to find out if this changes anything. If I can get anything back under his companies discount, than it's worth it! Maybe I should have just bought the iPhone last year and then not had to worry about "upgrade eligibility" ********!

sorry to tell you, but you will not get any student or corporate discount for the iphone. after fighting with att for 5 months straight [it wasn't appearing as a discount on my bill and they "couldn't figure out why"] i finally talked to someone who knew what the deal was...NO student or corporate discounts. sorry.

UWSpindoctor
Jul 1, 2008, 11:36 PM
That was true for the original iPhone which had a revenue sharing plan with Apple in place. The 3G iPhone does not have this revenue sharing and is being priced the same as any other smartphone. Therefore, there is a good chance the discounts will apply.

again, the reason the original iPhone was not eligible is a combination of what UWSpindoctor said, as well as the fact that the original iPhone was using, for lack of a better term, a special pricing scheme that was not standard for other smart phones. Now that it's using a standard smart phone plan, and people have stated that the memo that was leaked a while back specifically said that the iPhone 3G would be eligible for discounts... your past 5 months experience is actually irrelevant to the situation.

Damn my company only gives me a 10% discount :(

With the release of AT&T's plans today, my monthly bill is gonna be something like this:

$69.99 (450 anytime, 5,000 night and weekend)
$20 (unlimited text)
$6-$10 (tax. For the sake of calculation, lets say $10)

=$99

99-15% student discount($14.85)

= a reasonable $84.15 a month.

The $10 spike in the data plans and voice plans hurt, but the student discount nearly makes up for it. I'm still a go for Iphone 3G

Anybody else?

It all depends on your university you attend. There is a section of att's website that has a section that you enter your university or work email and they send you an email to take you the discount website with the discount prices.

its strange though because for mine she said "so they can reapply your discount" I took it to mean that I have the discount on my account because I signed up online with my school email address and they verify with that. I've read that it usually takes one to two billing cycles for the discount to take in place. I don't know if this applies to when you do it online or also if you do it in store.

I'm going to have to do it online because I don't have an ID for my school yet, so I couldn't "prove" it to AT&T. Also the phone wont be in my name, and I don't know if AT&T would apply a discount for me even though I'm not the account holder. Obviously they wouldn't be able to determine this online.

Question, according to the email I received im eligible for a discount but the att premier site doesn't say anywhere what my discount percentage is for my monthly bill. anybody?
Once you're logged into Premiere, click on Current Offers which is located on the top right and it should show the discount.

you WILL get the discount with the new iPhone. It is now the same as any other att smart phone. the reason we cant on the 2G iPhone is because of the special contract between at&t and apple. apparently that contract has changed with the release of the 3G iPhone

The Bookstore will be staffed and stocked on Launch Day. Stop by and activate your new iPhone 3G.
Employee and Student Discounts offered with picture ID.

I would assume that it is just talking about a discount on the service not the equipment. It may be worth while to check out your school bookstore.

Like ive said i really don't think ATT reps have any idea what is going on because most of them are incompetent. However lets examine that in an ATT press release said something along the lines that the IPhone will have no special treatment, ie the $20 unlimited data plan. That being said, if no special treatment really means no special treatment, then all just like a normal smart-phone university and corporate discounts should apply, in theory. However if this may make sense to us, ATT most of the time doesn't make much sense.
