A little confused about the 2.0 Upgrade... / What did i do to my iPhone?

I read through the FAQ at the top, but i'm a little confused..

When i got my iPhone a few months ago, I went ahead and ran ziphone on it, without really knowing what I was doing. So i downloaded some hardware app on the phone that says my bootloader is 3.9...

So my question is... When someone breaks the 2.0 Upgrade, what will I have to do. If i plug my phone into iTunes, and hit restore? Will it return it to its out of box condition. Or have I changed my bootloader?

Basically what do I need to do to prepare it for the 2.0 update?

wait for a new version of ziphone or use pwnage (most people say its safer), ziphone is easier to use but pwnage seems to be a better programme (although ive never had any issues with ziphone)

Depends on if you want to make do without your installer apps until they find a hack. Me personally I'm not upgrading to the new firmware until there are stable hacks for it. It's a question of personal taste, both is possible.

as far as i know, 2.0 was already hacked...at least the beta versions.

Up to beta 3 was hacked. There are ways of jailbreaking (supposedly) the current betas, but not unlocking (they're waiting for final to release anything). The new baseband that 2.0 upgrades to isn't unlockable like the other ones. As far as I know, they haven't figured out how to unlock the new baseband. So if you need unlocked, you'll have to stick with 1.1.4. If you just want to jailbreak, I'd expect a solution out shortly after the final 2.0 is out. The only issue with that is all of the Installer apps need to be rewritten for the 2.0 firmware, so it's pretty much useless at this point. You need to decide what appeals to you more in the short-term, the features of 2.0 or the apps on Installer.

As for Pwnage vs ZiPhone, I read lots of bad things about ZiPhone. Stuff like permanently destroying a baseband and spoofing the WiFi MAC address to be the ASCII spelling of ZIBRI. Pwnage seems to be the safest way to go.

I would avoid repeating that mistake. Do your research first especially when messing around with something that really could brick your phone...the bootloader.

ZiPhone does NOT work on 2.0 (it uses a security hole patched in a all the beta versions and therefore is not an option!)

Only pwnage will and it has to be updated to work when the final version is out on Friday.

DO NOT upgrade your phpne to 2.0 until pwnage has been updated or you may have problems jailbreaking and unlocking it but until the devteam get at the new firmware no one knows for sure what will happen!

As for your bootloader - it should not effect the upgrade in anyway.

If your phone is a few months old then ziphone downgraded your bootloader - what that means is that if you had a warranty on your iphone then you have voided it now but pwnage does let you return it to the original bootloader anyway so its not a concern now.

if I used ziphone only to jailbreak (install the apps) but never unlock, I am on AT&T, when 2.0 comes out, can I just do a restore in itunes and install the 2.0 update?

Yes you could just restore to 2.0 using iTunes.

But you may not be able to jailbreak it if you do that - if you really want to jailbreak I would wait for a pwnage update.

Ok thank you, That's what I wanted to know.. I keep hearing about how ziPhone does irreversable stuff... but really its just the bootloader, and now pwnage has found a way to reverse it...

So basically wait till pwnage says.. "We can jailbreak/unlock 2.0"... then restore via iTunes... Follow their instructions, and whalla i'm fine.

My question is if I can take my iphone as it is currently and go straight to pwnage, or if I need to do something to it first. In other words, do I need to reverse whatever ziphone did before upgrading to 2.0?

That crap Ziphone downgraded your BootLoader to 3.9

Luckily dev team brought out BootNeuter which fixes that.

However all you most likely will need to do is restore to 2.0 then run pwnage 2.0.

DO NOT USE ZIPHONE!!!

Use iLiberty+.

I used Ziphone to unlock and jailbreak as well, using Tmobile sim. I've been searcing various boards for the same info. geeb's comments seem to be what most people are saying for those who are looking for unlock-only 2.0 solution.
