I believe that most of the core shutdowns I still have only occur when I play .wmv and youtube videos. What do you use for .wmv files? Flip4mac? other?

I usually use VLC. It seems to play just about everything :D


Though, you're talking about on a MBA. I don't know what the performance difference might be vs Flip, but I think VLC is a more elegant solution

i disagree. i think QuickTime Player + Flip4Mac is a much more elegant solution as it fits better into OS X's UI and VLC has a few UI inconsistencies and crashes more i find.

i've found more problems with Flip4Mac than VLC and clips seem to take a lot longer to start playing in Flip4Mac, but maybe my experience differs from your own.

I dont know why, but I've always had problems with VLC, but Flip seems to work just fine for me. Even talked my work into buying me the studio version so they can get wmv files from me.

you have heard from air owners. AFAIK, Flip4Mac or VLC are your only options. i don't believe mplayer plays WMV, but that's the only other one i can think of.

I have a MacBook Air 1.6. I find that watching a WMV using QuickTime and Flip4Mac uses a lot more CPU cycles than watching the same video using VLC. For example, I just tried watching a 640x480 WMV that I compressed myself from DV footage, and CPU usage was almost 90% with QuickTime and only 25% with VLC.

However, there are some WMV's that VLC won't even open, such as some WMV HD movies. Flip4Mac can open those.

VLC is the best media player in the world.
