Lightning does strike twice — your home and then your insurance company — and insurers are noticing that the average thunderbolt claim is growing.

The number of homeowners' claims from lightning dropped last year as their average size grew. That was partly because of an "explosion in the number and value" of home electronics, such as widescreen TVs, multiple-computer households and gaming systems, the Insurance Information Institute said Monday.

There were 177,100 lightning claims in 2007 causing $942 million of insured damage and averaging $5,321 a claim, the institute said. In 2006, there were about 256,000 claims averaging $3,446 each and totaling more than $882 million.

The number and total cost of lightning claims are likely to grow this year because of record tornado activity that is typically accompanied by severe thunderstorms, the institute said.

We just had a lightning strike near us. It threw a few breakers and fried my cable modem, some chargers, and a home theater amp. The insurance wants work reports for all the damaged appliances. Does anyone have any experience with this?
