Newbie Questions on Core Shutdown / Temps

Have read a few different threads pertaining to core shutdown and high temps - how do you all figure that kind of stuff out? I just bought mine on 30 June and really like it - but it does seem quite warm after a while of continuous use. I have no idea if I have a core shutdown problem - but if I do, I'd like to know. My apologies if this seems simple - but would appreciate your assistance none-the-less.

All laptops get warm. I have had my MPA for months and never had a problem with it. My MBP that I purchased in 2006 gets much hotter and people complained it about it when it came out also.

the main issue I see is likely from placement of the laptop on an object, like my lap, that causes the vents to get blocked. Due to the design, there wasn't anywhere else they could vent it. For the most part, I'm careful about not blocking it. But right now, it's been blocked for about 2 hours and I'm at 50 degrees and around 5200 fan speed.

It really hasn't been an issue for me.

How do you figure out your fan speed? Is there a built in way to tell temp and fan speed? Still would like to know how folks figure out when a core shuts down...

And, now I'm down to 47 degrees and 2500 fan speed. Go figger.

went out last night and ran a bunch of youtube videos. I stressed the machine out for a good half hour, watching istat. It did heat up pretty high, fan cranking at 6200, vents not blocked. I saw the cores max out a couple of times, but no shutdowns.

The youtube videos that didn't have much action to them ran the machine cooler than those that were sports clips, lots of action. This "issue" seems to be video card (or lack thereof) related.

change the setting in istat to "cpu usage". you'll see them as two bars. Nothing really happened that was apparent. videos didn't slow down or stutter or anything.

Really? When I had core shutdown problems youtube videos would start stuttering. Not having core shutdowns since I replaced the thermal paste, really helped.

I am an technician and electronic designer (but not a computer engineer) myself. Is there any guideline or page who show how to apply the thermal paste the right way? And which type of thermal paste is recommended.

My MacBook seems to stick at 84 - 86 C when Im ripping two or three things together!
It never seems to cross that!

Nope. My DVDs continue to rip at the same speed!

P.S.: I read an article once, by Apple, which said not to believe 3rd party temp monitoring programs as they tend to be inaccurate and report much higher temperatures. And of late, I feel iStat pro (which reported the temp) to fall under this category!
It displays the temp shooting up even if the CPU's at 100% for just 1 sec!

When it happened, the computer start to slow down. Movies start to stutter, If you type it takes more hen 1 or 2 seconds for each letter to appear on the screen. The dock on OS-X stutter and freeze. Access to applications and folders become slow.

Most often I have it with Skype or Yahoo messenger. On the second place with watching your tube video's over longer time.

Not hard to miss... and very irritating.

I have to admit in colder ambiances it gets better and core shutdown is less of an issue. (but not impossible to get)

MacBook do not suffer from this problem.

Its mostly caused by heat, such as when it is used on carpet. The heat isn't allowed to be pushed out of the laptop

Go to Applications >Utilities,and drag the activity monitor into your dock. Right click on it, select dock icon> Show CPU usage. Now there should be two bars in the dock, each representing a core. On a core shutdown, there will only be one active.
