MacRumors Reaches 200,000 Members

MacRumors has reached yet another noteworthy milestone: the 200,000th forum registration.

The rate of new registrations reached a peak of nearly 10,000 per month in January and February 2008, in the wake of the MacBook Air launch at Macworld San Francisco. The rate decreased in the months following but recently spiked again to nearly 8,500 in June, due to excitement over the iPhone 3G launch at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference.

Dates of previous membership count milestones:
Apr 2001: MacRumors vBulletin Forums Launch
Nov 2003: 25,000 members
Apr 2005: 50,000 members
Jun 2006: 75,000 members
Feb 2007: 100,000 members
Sep 2007: 125,000 members
Jan 2008: 150,000 members
Mar 2008: 175,000 members
Jul 2008: 200,000 members

Not all of these members are still active, of course, but it shows that the news, rumors, and discussions at MacRumors have continued to attract a larger and larger audience.

We thank our forum members for their participation and for making MacRumors a primary Internet destination for all things Apple.

We're actually not sure where the discrepancy comes in. We've definitely banned a lot more than 139 members, so that's not it. It probably comes from a few instances in which we've merged two accounts, or possibly deleted a few entirely.

Well, what do you mean by "current?"

On any given day, we generally have anywhere from 6,000-8,000 registered members logging in.

Roughly 81,000 members have logged in at least once in 2008. About 54,000 of those have made at least one post during that time.

That graph is looking scarily logarithmic-ish. Good in many ways, but potentially opening a Pandora's Box of scale and demand-related issues, I would imagine, especially with Mac market share inching upwards and the potential iPhone halo effect to take root.

I wonder what reasonable projections can be made from the known knowns and the unknown knowns, to borrow a phrase from Donald Rumsfeld... when we might reasonably expect a million registrations, for instance, when maybe upwards of 30,000 people a day are logging in...

If there's no practical limit, can you imagine how fast Forum Spy might be moving at that point? Especially on big news days? :D

cfan, a Chinese computer forum, reportedly has over 3 million members.

Major League Gaming has 1,973,297 members.

Other large vBulletin forums:
mlg gamebattles has 1,972,506.

MOTOR-TALK (German) has 1,890,275.

The Sims Resource has 1,805,199.

codemasters has 1,593,071.

ForumPlanet has 1,569,653.

jolt online gaming (UK) has 1,491,850.

Giga.de (German) has 1,435,453.

its interesting to see the rate of new members increasing so rapidly over time.

Wow, and I though we may have been among one of the largest, congrats MR!! It seems like we hit a new milestone here about every other day now. Here is to 300,000!!

I predict 1,000,000 by 2011.
