Does anyone know what is the highest I could go on a Performa 6400? It has 8.1 now, and I think I remember an apple doc saying 8.0 was the highest I could go. I have 9.0 and wondered if anyone else had gotten 9 on a slower machine.

It might be able to get to 9, but it may be very buggy and slow. My Performa 6300 CD was running 8.5, so try it, it may work.

I used to have a PMac Performa 6400/200. The highest recommended OS is 9.1. But there is a website that allows you to run 9.2.2. Heres the web address: OS9forever.com I installed it on my 6400 and it ran fine. Give it a try.

So how would I go about doing this? Install, 9, then upgrade to 9.2.2 via the helper thing?

Os 9 on those 603 machines is very slow. Unless you need anything taht has to do with Os 9 i recomend using 8.6

no, all you have to do is download the stand alone installer of the 9.2.1 and the 9.2.2. You need to install or run the helper app. then, tell the app. where they are, install 9.2.1, and restart. then after you restart, run the helper again, find 9.2.2 and install it, and restart agin and that should be it. Read the instructions though first to make sure. I did it a while ago, i'm not sure if that is exactly how it goes. Godd Luck.

I've got a 6400/180 (the first mac I ever bought!) and at one point I was running OS9 on it, but I ended up reinstalling 8.6 because of the slowing effect it had on the machine. Unless you really need something that OS9 gives you, I would stick to OS8.6. Or if you are just doing this for fun to see what you can do with an old machine, then knock yourself out!
