Preparations are underway for the iPhone 3G launch this Friday at AT&T and Apple stores nationwide. Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5022505/behold-the-iphone-3g-display) posts photos of oversized iPhone 3G store displays (pictured above) that demonstrates the functionality of the iPhone. Apple had similar units on display for the original iPhone launch, but these have been updated (http://gizmodo.com/photogallery/iphone3gdisplay/1002570084) to reflect the black back case of the iPhone 3G.
AT&T stores are due to get iPhone 3G demo units starting tomorrow:Beginning July 8th you will receive the new iPhone 3G demo devices at your store to enhance your sales process. These devices will be used the same as your 2G demo devices in your sales process but now you can demonstrate the additional capabilities of the iPhone 3G including the App StoreThe leaked sales memo (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=5716115&postcount=41) also details that employees are to download apps from the App Store on the morning of July 11th and that the phones are to be activated on July 10th. So, while, the demo units may be in AT&T stores tomorrow, they may not be available for public use until launch day.
Apple held their retail meeting last night, and details have been slow to trickle out. We've heard that more details will be available throughout the week but several employees believe that they will open at 8am to mirror AT&T's launch time. (Apple apparently did not dictate an exact time so it may be left up to the discretion of the individual Apple stores.) As expected, iPhones will be activated in-store and must be paid for by check, credit card or gift card. Cash may be used to purchase gift cards, however, which in turn could be used to buy the iPhone. Credit checks, of course, will be performed at time of sale. A few of these details are also corroborated at Macenstein (http://macenstein.com/default/archives/1478).

Damn. I can't decide if I should go to an Apple Store or an AT&T store. I'm afraid the Apple folks will screw something up in the activation process. And I'm afraid the AT&T store won't have as much stock.

Friend of mine works at apple retail, he said they weren't told whether it was an 8am open time or not and that all the mobile checkout devices they have will be able to walk through the activation and plan selection for the phone. So it really shouldn't be possible for them to screw it up, as it's just a walkthrough for them. Check Credit, check what plan, phone activates. Just like iTunes but an apple employee does it.

I would say for all EXISTING ATT customers to go to an ATT store so that Apple doesnt screw something up. All new customers should go to the Apple Store.

Arn, first, thank you for this website, it's the only thing that keeps me going at work! What is the general consensus on supply? Will it meet the demand? Anyone have experience from last years launch, I heard Apple stores had no problem meeting demand last year so can anyone confirm that? This week is crawling by so I hope they open at 8 because I don't know if I could sit at work for 8 hours on Friday!

I called the Apple Store in Nashville yesterday, and they will be opening at 10 am. I suspect that Apple Stores inside malls (like this one) will stick to their normal opening times, while free-standing ones might open earlier.

Really? A lot of Malls open their doors early for "mall walkers" and for other various reasons. Also, I would think Apple would have the clout to get permission to open their store early.

This is great, one step closer to the actual release. And to those questioning which store, existing should probably go to an AT&T store just so nothing is messed up, and new could go to either, but I would recommend AT&T, just my standing on it.

You would think they would like to get cash or check instead of credit card because of the whole percentage thing they have to pay to the credit card companies its like 3% in some cases that 2 to 3$ per iphone purchase they will lose. Thats alot of money when your talking several hundred thousand iphones.

I would think the steps for that would be easier, especially if the activation only version of iTunes is like what we used at home. I think Apple Gift cards are allowed so you can buy a gift card with cash then get the phone.
One detail I'm trying to get confirmation on is the fate of the current AT&T non-iPhone users. Those people need to qualify for upgrade eligibility and may need to go to AT&T stores to get an iPhone 3G.

There's gotta be another answer, cause IM sure they ring up all sales via a cash register or some kind of point of sale system. Hence, they could track sales very easily.
But, I do thank you for your reply! Have a great day!

Question... Do you think existing AT&T iPhone customers will have any problem at Apple stores? I plan on bringing my current iPhone and a printout of the page showing my upgrade eligibility to try and avoid any issues, but who knows...

If you start new AT&T phone service, rather than transfer an existing mobile number, do you get any choice of the phone number, other than the area code? I've gotten conflicting answers when I asked that at various AT&T stores, some saying they'll assign you a single phone number with no choices, others saying you'll have a list to choose from when it comes up on their screen.
I've been told by two of them not to both coming in early for a credit check. if you have good credit, it should take only a minute or two.
Some of the salespeople are blasι about it, but some seem genuinely excited about having a Big Event in their store.

I was going to go to an Apple store just because I'd rather support them than the AT&T store (I know Apple gets the same amount regardless but it will still affect the sales reports of the stores and I like the people at my local Apple store). But I read somewhere that if you have a business account it's better to go to AT&T. I'm hoping I can still get my discount on the voice plan even though I'm not counting on a discount for the data plan.

I've tried to get an answer to this one but I've had trouble getting concrete information. I have an older voice plan on AT&T. Is it possible to tack on the data plan like you were able to do with the old iPhone, or do you HAVE to pick one of the new voice/data plans? I do not currently have an iphone but I am upgrade eligible. I just don't want to lose my older, slightly better voice plan. Thanks if anyone can help. :)

I don't understand why people think it's better to go to an AT&T store to keep your chances of a screw-up lower. Given my experience with Apple employees versus employees of ANY cell carrier, I trust an Apple employee just learning how to do the activation process over an AT&T employee who "knows" how to do it.

Couple of comments on various posts...
If you have a biz account, or you get any kind of discount with AT&T through your employer, you should probably go to the AT&T store to do your upgrade. I've been told before (via a Biz customer service rep for AT&T), if I upgrade to make sure I do it at an AT&T store to be sure the discount is supported.
On the phone number thing, they can look through some available numbers to let you choose from them, but I doubt this will be the case on iPhone 3G day... it would slow the process down too much. You can request a new phone number via customer service post-sale I'm sure.
I am sure I should go to the AT&T store because of an employer discount, but I still just feel like the Apple store is the place to be. I was number 368 in line last year for the original launch... and I still got an 8GB phone. If I recall, none of the AT&T stores in town had that level of stock.

To RockStarJoe's question...
if it's like last year, you can just add on the dataplan. That's what I did. I don't think anything changes just because you are signing a new contract, there is nothing about that that (in the past) says you have to change to a new calling plan. -Unless you are with Sprint. :P

I'm going crazy waiting for the 11th! It seems so far away, but hey, we've waited this long....I guess I can wait a few more days! Haha.
I would rather go to an Apple Store because of the limited stock that AT&T stores might have. Plus I like the service and support that the Apple Store ALWAYS offers...it's like 1,000,000x better than any AT&T store...

well if they're in a situation like me, they prob should go to the AT&T store. my current voice plan is more expensive than the minimum plan that the iphone requires. i'd like to get the minimum plan with the new iphone with text msg.
The people at the AT&T store are used to and very capable of making that happen. i've gone to the store and had my plans changed with ease at the AT&T store.
do we know if the Apple store will be able to handle that? have they done it before? it's a new territory and getting your phone plan messed up really blows. if i wasn't changing my plan, i would definitely just go to the Apple store without hesitation.

I was at an AT&T in Louisville about a week ago, and the couple in front of me wanted to get an iPhone and the employee told them that the 3G iPhones were coming out this week. He went on to say that the AT&T store that I was at (closest to the Apple Store in the mall) would be receiving 95 iPhones (no info. on what sizes...but anyway) and that any other AT&T stores in the area would only be receiving 40 iPhones.
I expected better, especially with such a high demand product!

Just wait until you purchase the iPhone on Friday. ATT will essentially send a cancellation request to Verizon and port your number over. Don't make things more complicated.

Its your number you will have to pay off Verizon but until the 14th you will have 2 active phones 1 iphone with ATT and 1 whatever phone with Verizon. If you sign a new contract with a new number you are stuck with that one, sorry.
Im Curious to know what is wrong with good old cash? You ever try to make a purchase at an Apple store with cash or a check? Yes, it is possible to do this. When I purchased my 1st gen iphone I was coming from Nextel. My contract wasn't up until 2 weeks after I purchased it, so I used the number I got from AT&T until my Nextel contract was up. Then I called AT&T and they ported my Nextel number. 2 Important things: 1. Don't port your number before your contract expires. If you do, you'll be charged the cancellation fee. 2. Don't cancel your account with Verizon after your contract expires. Porting your number will do this.

I think he means the white marking. On the current iPhone, while the physical button is circular, the white marking on it is a square with rounded corners, the one in the picture appears to be a circular physical button with a white circular marking.
Not really important, but interesting I suppose... :)

I'm in the same situation and have an older family plan that has 150 more anytime minutes compared to the same priced family plan now a days. I've read and been told that I should just be able to add the $30 data plan to my existing family plan without a problem. Hopefully that's how it pans out.
I want to get the phone from the Apple store, but I think with this unanswered question, the fact that I have a corporate discount to ensue I keep and the fact that my wife is getting a new phone (non-iPhone) too leads me to believe I should probably need to head straight to the AT&T store. Hopefully they have 16GBs left in stock by 6 or 7 p.m. on Friday.

Apple stores throughout the United States are preparing this week for the iPhone 3G. Sources report that employees will receive training regarding the iPhone 3G beginning Tuesday and running through Thursday. In addition, all Apple retail stores will shut down their reservation queues on July 11. Customers will not be able to make reservations for the following programs: One to One, Personal Shopping, Workshops, Genius Bar, Youth Programs or Business. Reservations will be available again on July 12, 2008, but it is recommended that customers wait until the following week due to anticipated demand for the iPhone 3G.
Final details of the iPhone 3G sales event are to be hammered out on a conference call with Apple retail managers that will take place Monday, July 7th. Although AT&T has announced that they will be selling the iPhone 3G beginning at 8 a.m. local time Apple has yet to announce their own time of sale Calls to Apple PR go unanswered regarding this issue at press time.
Traditionally, Apple retail management receives details about new product releases on the Monday prior to said items release. Shortly after that, merchandise, signage, etc. begins to appear in the stores for deployment.

Might be an AT&T question. But I thought I'd ask here incase other people have the same ques.
I'm a current T-mobile customer and I went to an AT&T store here in Atlanta (at Atlantic Station) and signed up for new AT&T service last week. The guy asked if I wanted to port my T-mobile number right then or wait until I get the iPhone. Of course, I decided to wait because since the iPhone isn't out yet I wouldn't have been able to get calls for a week.
Long story short, you can establish a new phone number at AT&T and port your old number at a later date. Just don't cancel the contract with your current provider until after you port your number...
Hope this helps...

They were talking about the fact that you have to pay with check or credit card, and asking if that applies to both Apple stores AND AT&T stores. Not about credit checks...
I believe that just applies to Apple stores...
Whether or not AT&T will change their policy for the new iPhone, I don't know.. but I've used cash before in AT&T corp. stores with no problem...
They may apply the "No Cash" policy for the launch..

I would say for all EXISTING ATT customers to go to an ATT store so that Apple doesnt screw something up. All new customers should go to the Apple Store.

As expected, iPhones will be activated in-store and must be paid for by check, credit card or gift card.
NO CHECKS. Only Credit Card or Gift card are allowed as apple can only run the transaction through the handheld register.

The gentleman said the only issues that may come up are with plan selection/issues due to having poor credit. I asked him what time they would open but he said, "We are still very hush about that but our store ours are from 10am-9:30pm."

Is there a way to get the credit check and everything set up beforehand? I say this because I will be on a family plan and would rather just get the phone after work instead of bringing the owner of the account. Can I port my number over to ATT into a family plan?
I would ideally just want to bring a sheet of paper in and buy the iPhone and have them activate it according to what was already done.

you can do a credit check before hand, at any ATT&T store..but if the phone is not under your name you must bring the person with you...which sucks!!

Unless the account holder as said person as an "Authorized User" to the account.. That will enable the person listed as an "Authorized User" to purchase the phone.. As long as the "Authorized User" is the legal age to upgrade the contract.. which is 18..

Cash slows things down.
It needs to be counted.... and then change needs to be given.... and of course there's gunna be that one guy who wants to pay in like all 5's and 1's...
Plus the Apple Store can have a bunch of employees with the mobile terminals that take either credit cards or gift cards and would be able to ring customers anywhere diverting traffic in the store with more flexibility than everyone crammed in the front of the store around the registers.

1. Why do people think Apple store will be able to port your number, do credit check and assign you a new account with ATT faster than ATT store?
Employees at Apple haven't even been taught how to do any of the above yet. I think the wait will be worse than expected. 20-30 min minimum per new customer.
2. The wait on Friday will be hellish. Anyone who's done an activation/porting knows it will take 30min to do all that. Add some complaining customers and problems with eligibility issues.......it might as well be Friday the 13th.

It looks like there's even more confusion,
An Apple store insider has leaked to us what they say will be some limitations and barriers on buying the iPhone Apple and AT&T stores will apply to the new iPhone 3g that goes on sale this Friday:
* Buyers will be 'pre-qualified' via a series of questions.
* Customers with corporate/business plans will have to go to AT&T to purchase their phones, only phone for personal use can be purchased at the store.
* You will be required to present valid US government ID to purchase the phone
* You will be required to provide your social security number to a store employee in order to do a credit check.
* You will be required to pick a plan and pay the activation fee at time of purchase.
* Phones will be activated in the store.
The last two have already been disclosed to the press but I think the rest is new information. If true, it looks like they're really trying to cut down on iPhones being unlocked and getting resold overseas. Be sure to bring your driver's license and memorize your social security number before camping out on Thursday night.
So if you're eligible for a discount on your plan, you HAVE to go to an AT&T store????? wtf...

whoever you talked to said that because that is what they think will happen. Apple is now selling the iPhone at 199 and 299. When you scan the barcode on the box that is the price that comes up. Apple stores can only sell the iphone at this subsidezed price...hence the fact that if you walk into an Apple Store with a RAZR on AT&T and say I want an iPhone 3G for 199....the Apple employee will say...I'm sorry but since you already have a non-iPhone with AT&T you must go to them.

AT&T will be scanning the same barcode as Apple so your logic does not make sense. Anyone can post an "official" statement but you have been asked a couple of times and have not revealed a source of your information. 1. Will 611 be even available with the number of calls it will get that day.
2. so customer will call 611 while in line and have Apple employee talk with 611. If 611 says OK, then you're golden or else fork over the extra 100/200 buck.

I have AT&T with a non local number (# from IL and I'm in NY) and I have been out of contract for a few years (I always managed to find phones without using AT&T subsidized upgrades) but the account is currently in my fathers name. I guess I will, sorry for being so skeptical and I am not trying to be confrontational, but it doesn't seem like that difficult of an issue to be handled by the Apple store. If they can handle the activation/upgrade fees then surely they can handle a 100/200 addition to that price. However, it would be nice to hear something concrete seeing how we are less than 4 days away from launch.

if you port your number over now, how will you use your phone? usually when you port over a number, your account will show that you are NOT eligible for upgrade for 2 yrs so you'll be stuck. That's why it's paramount that YOUR ATT STORE says it's ok. Or else you will run into a massive confusion because your account will show that you are not eligible for a new phone till 2010.

i'm not really worried about the eligibility factor. i've never had a phone on AT&T so I'm not upgrading to anything. the iPhone will be my first phone. The rep gave me a copy of my contract with my AT&T number (which will change when I port my T-mobile number over) and he also gave me my SIM chip. I explained to him exactly what I planned to do and he didn't say it would be a problem.
I'm assuming that when you ported your number to AT&T in late June you got an AT&T phone and then plan to upgrade to the iPhone (which shouldn't be a problem as you're still in the 30 day window. I never got an AT&T phone and plan to port my number over on Thursday evening. One detail I'm trying to get confirmation on is the fate of the current AT&T non-iPhone users. Those people need to qualify for upgrade eligibility and may need to go to AT&T stores to get an iPhone 3G.
arn
I still can't wrap my brain around it either. I am a wireless pre-paid AT&T customer (pay as you go). The local At&T store tells me that I will pay an extra $200 over the $199 price ($399 for 8gb) to port my pay as you go number to the iPhone. Of course this was my number one question of AT&T when I bought the pay as you go phone...they didn't say it would cost $200 dollars.
The guy at the At&T store said AT&T considers their pay as you go customers 'contract customers' which, we aren't by definition in my mind. Even if I am a contract customer i've never had a phone subsidized so i figure that I am due an "upgrade" anyway if they insist on considering me a contract customer.

For those who want the iPhone 3G. It will be a disaster! Apple employees trying to activate phones with customers who dont qualify, forgetting stuff, failing credit etc. Like there will be 3-5 employees activating them at 10 mins each...lines will be hours...long
Only if they give tickets saying come back at 6pm or 3pm or 10:15am and you would be guarinteed an iphone

i'm not really worried about the eligibility factor. i've never had a phone on AT&T so I'm not upgrading to anything. the iPhone will be my first phone.
I'll miss some calls because I won't have a handset until Friday morning (but as I mentioned earlier, no one calls me anyway).
As long as you do it at the same store it's probably fine.
My issue was that I activated my lines at Costco......no activation fees. But ATT stores locally say that they can't change that account even though 611 says no problem.
I guess I got too smart for my own good by porting over early and safe $36x2 for family plan. Now I am dealing the customer rep to clear this up.
Worst case.....cancel within my 30days and port number back to T mobile. Wait till lines clear up and get my iPhone 3G..........man, that's painful.

After reading through all these posts it just amazes me how little faith anyone has in Apple. Sure the lines will be a little slower, there will be hick ups along the way but come on we all know we wont be in lines for days to get a phone. Give apple some credit and know that they most likely have a backup plan incase it becomes to difficult to get a mass amount of people in and out. How about we wait to see how it plays our rather then bash them thinking that there going to be so stupid that it will take them days to get us in the door and back out.

A lot of people are freaking out for nothing. They will have plenty of iPhones available and I think the line will only be for the folks that are getting there at 8am or 10am. Seriously, if you go in the afternoon, I believe will be no lines at Apple stores at all.

agreed. I have no idea how they think this is going to work smoothly. I know Apple usually takes care of things like this, I just don't see how this will work.
From all the information I have, each iPhone sale could take 30 minutes or longer. There is a very real chance many people will not qualify to purchase from the Apple store.
Customers are going to be crabby and employees are going to be frustrated. Imagine the customer that just needs to run in to get something minor, they will never get helped.
The bad thing is, this process of purchase will not get faster, so even when demand dies down, there will still be long lines of people needing help. I see this being very crazy for quite some time in these stores. People are better off going to an AT&T store since they are able to sell to more people. There are too many restrictions on phone buying at the Apple store.
The lines for the original phone were crazy, these will be much worse just due to the long activation process.
I hope I'm wrong about this, but I don't see how it can work.

i wish everyone good luck for getting their 3G's...hopefully the lines aren't too bad...I myself will be waiting until Christmas to upgrade, maybe they'll have a 32gb by then...
but more importantly to me, from that memo it looks like the App Store will be open earlier than 8am, assuming that ATT/Apple stores don't have special App Store access AND that OS2.0 will be available at that time too...so while everyone is in line maybe I'll have semi-decent download speeds...at least for an hour or so until everyone gets home!

I love Apple and all, but the fact is that setting up cell phone contracts takes a long time. I have never bought a cell phone/watched a friend buy a cell phone and not have it take at least 45 minutes (I bought my MacBook Pro in about 10 minutes and that was just because I changed my mind about which one I wanted after they had already brought my computer out from the back). Combine that with the fact that the employees will have never done this before and the huge lines that will no doubt be in place, I really can't see how anyone could make this system function, even Apple.
I don't think people are bashing Apple so much as no one can quite wrap their heads around how Apple is going to find a solution to the problem of in-store activation. I am very curious to know because I want to buy mine on Friday at the Apple Store, but I don't want to go there unless I am convinced that they have a realistic plan in mind to deal with the crowds and the added burden of in-store activation.

Update: We've heard more tidbits about existing AT&T non-iPhone customers. It appears that unless Apple makes an official announcement otherwise, existing AT&T customers who do not currently own an iPhone should go an AT&T store (not an Apple Retail Store) to upgrade to the iPhone 3G.
ANY existing AT&T non-iPhone customers or just those who are not upgrade eligible? I don't see why I would need to go to AT&T, since I have been eligible for an upgrade for the last 2 years.

Right now though for all we know apple can do this two ways. One if your not an AT&T customer, find your way across the street to the AT&T store and get one there and if you do have At&t and have an iphone get inline and it will take all of 10min to activate the phone and kick you out the door. They could also setup two lines, one for people with the iphone that wish to upgrade and another for all the people that need service, need plans, have questions all that into another line. That line could have at&t staff on hand to help with everything.
People are just speculating to much on what is going to happen. I say let it play out and have fun while being there. I waited for the first phone in line, made some new friends, got free starbucks from Apple and it still took me over 45min just to get from the line into the register to pay and i was 13th in line.

Im Curious to know what is wrong with good old cash? Is it because of credit check and with cash no way for them to to charge you in the future if ya default?
For some reason I always had the impression that stores had to accept cash at a minimum. I'm obviously mistaken but it doesn't seem right to tell people that they can not use printed money.

Use the cash and buy a gift card, and use the gift card to buy the phone. They can't deny you use of a gift card.

I am a bit aggravated by the way Apple and T are dealing with family plans. I called T to confirm that with a family plan each potential member must be present to buy their own phone. This is assinine to me. It really stinks since I will be stuck at work all day on Friday and the principal holder on the family account will be able to get his phone...but not me! Then one wonders what the other members of the accout have to do to get their phone...go into the store, buy it, and then somehow Apple and T add you to the family line...how in the hell do they do that? I imagine the principal account holder will have to be present, even though they already bought their phone. Just plain stupid.

Even when you are upgrading you still are going to have to sign a completely new contract. Its not a matter of just buying the new iPhone and adding it to your account. Its definitely easier than starting a whole new contract, but it still takes time. Last time I upgraded my phone without changing anything on my account it still took about 30 minutes for the whole process. The credit check takes a relatively short time its the setting up/signing/etc. of a new contract that takes the time. Apple can't magically make the cell phone contract and activation process quicker.
The first time the Apple Stores were essentially selling iPhones like they were any other product that you just had to buy and take out of the store. Now, all the employees are going to have their hands tied with activations and contracts. I wouldn't be surprised if it took about twice as long to get through as it did with the 1G iPhone.

Not only will the lines be long and take forever due to the demand, but unlike last time, every situation will be different. Not simply buying and taking or even buying and turning the damn phone on. All the variations. three price points depending who you are. One phone vs multi phones. Credit checks. People not having what they need or ready to buy (ever been in line at the supermarket when some moron waits until the very end to pull out a wallet or checkbook to START writing the check?).
People will expect to pay 199. and find out at the counter that they have to pay 399. Some credit will be denied and the costumer will want to get on the phone with the credit card company or whatever? Or speak with a manager.
People with ask questions on how to use the damn thing!
..and then there is that rumour about showing up at the wrong store!!!!
Everyone here knows better but thousands more have no clue.
Apple usually makes things so simple. Again even the promotional posters and ads read "half the price", but that's really for maybe half the people or less.
It will not be a pretty site I fear. And I am usually an optimist!

You missed what I was trying to get across. If everyone had a 1G phone and walked in there would be no credit checks to setup the phone on the account. At&T Does not require credit to be pulled to upgrade your iPhone or any phone for that matter. So the lines will move fast. If all there doing is cracking the box, plugging into itunes, having you read the agreement to the 2 year contract clicking I accept and signing. I dont see this being a huge problem. Its all the people that need to add a line, add a family plan or any other combo of things that will take forever. Hince two lines one for the easy people (IE Iphone 1G folks) and another for all the people needing extra help on accounts with At&t staff on hand.

I wonder how long they will keep this policy in place. Might be just on launch day to ensure that they know from the line how many phones will be going out the door. If you have 500 phones in stock and 400 people in line, you can announce that you have enough stock for everyone so they won't worry. If you're not sure how many of those 400 will be purchasing 2, 3, or more phones on a family plan you really couldn't know when to tell people in line that you are out of stock. Even though its a pain for me as well (I'm having to take 2 family members with me to stand in line) I think its probably the best way they could handle things.

It sounds to me like Apple can't or doesn't want to determine upgrade eligibility for existing AT&T customers, unless you have an iPhone.
Makes things 1000x easier for them, so I can see why they would want it that way. They will take the easy sales: new customers, and existing iPhone users. AT&T can deal with everyone else...
No insider info, but it would seem to make sense to me...

This isn't entirely true. An AT&T rep told me that if you are an existing AT&T without an iPhone, you are only eligible for the upgrade price if you have been on your contract for at least 20 months (4 months left on contract). So it is possible to upgrade for the subsidized price, they just want to milk you of most of your money, first.

Gift Scenerio:
Background information: My birthiday is just after the iPhone 3G release. Im an existing iPhone user.
My wife has been "hinting" that she is going to be getting me the 3G iPhone. So, if someone wants to purchase an iPhone 3G as a gift how are they going to purchase the phone without having to activate the phone. Obviously, they will not be paying for the phone bill each month so there credit history would not matter. In my case my wife is planning on buying (I hope) the new iPhone for my birthday, how will she be able to purchase the iPhone and give it to me as a surprise? I don't want a new phone number!
This same situation will apply to those wanting to purchase iPhones as gifts, but would not be activating them. ATT just needs to realize that they can't control the iPhone. People are going to jailbreak the phone and use it on the carrier they prefer!

You would think they would like to get cash or check instead of credit card because of the whole percentage thing they have to pay to the credit card companies its like 3% in some cases that 2 to 3$ per iphone purchase they will lose. Thats alot of money when your talking several hundred thousand iphones.
Actually in this day and age it is cheaper to for large companies to take a credit card than cash. The cost of having someone come collect the money from all the stores and deal with it is very costly, also their is next to no risk with credit cards, people cant hold you at gun point and demand money that was paid by credit card.

You are going to have to have some sort of doctorate just to understand what you need to do in order to get a damn cell phone.
Here's an idea Apple and AT&T, go back to the iTunes activation and let those who want to unlock the friggin thing unlock it! It has done nothing but help the iPhone's mystique and allure.
Too many problems are coming, can just feel it in the air.
A) Wouldn't want Apple Store CS's messing with my AT&T account.
and
B) Wouldn't want some AT&T slimy stooly opening the box and touching my iPhone before me. And oh yes..... they are slimy. If you don't believe me just walk past an AT&T kiosk in any mall in America. I seem to recall MacRumors and other similar sites reporting awhile back that existing iPhone customers would be able to do at-home activations of 3G iPhones purchased at an Apple store, thereby greatly speeding things up at those stores (they'd have two lines, one for new activations and one for existing iPhone users). Was that debunked, or is there any chance that's what we'll encounter come Friday?

Not sure if this is the right place to publish this but didn't know where else to put it.
Vodafone Portugal announced the new iPhone 3G plans and prices:
The Plans start at 29.90/month with 100min and 250Mb and ends in 64.90/month for 500min and 250Mb, with an intermediate plan of 44.90/month with 230min and 250Mb included.
If you choose to follow one of the 3 iPhone specific plans the iPhone itself will cost you from 129.90 to 389.90 and you must give them your actual phone.
If you don't want to sign contract you can buy it for 499.90 for the 8Gb and 599.90 for the 16Gb and you must give Vodafone your phone.
The plans are not a total rip off because before the iPhone you paid ~26/month for 100min and 100Mb, so the first iPhone plan is actually acceptable. The only problem is here in Portugal we tend to prefer the pay & Go option, so I'm seeing this 499 and 599 price moving a lot of people away from the iPhone. In the business market the pre-paid options are more common though so this may actually boost iPhone sales.
I am not getting one unluckily, the 499 is too high for me and i'm not moving away from my actual pay & go option, for 10/month I get free unlimited SMS to the Vodafone network (we use SMS a LOT here in Portugal) and I can spend the 10 in communications for other networks so I'm not moving from 10/month to 29.90/month, I would love to get my hands on an iPhone 3G as a I see it as a revolutionary device but being a student i simply can't afford the 499 nor the 29.90/month so my only hope is to wait and pray for a more affordable pay & go option.
Optimus is the other carrier that will sell the iPhone in Portugal but to my knowledge they didn't announced their prices yet.
Is not uncommon at all to see a person with 2 or 3 mobile phones here in Portugal so please Apple, talk to Vodafone and make them push the 499 price down a little, 350 or 400 is actually a fair price and would make lots of people to consider buying it in my opinion. :D:apple::D

You can't buy another subsidized phone (iPhone) during the same 2 year contract. If you are on verizon or another company...you will be able to use your phone when you walk out of the store with a 6 hour timeframe of your number being transfered. During this time you will still receive calls/texts on your old phone.
I'm confused. What if I have an ATT phone (not an iPhone) but I am eligible for an upgrade now? I am still eligible for the subsidized price, right? So can't I got to an Apple store?

Update: We've heard conflicting tidbits about existing AT&T non-iPhone customers. To avoid confusion and delays, existing AT&T customers who do not currently own an iPhone should go an AT&T store (not an Apple Retail Store) to upgrade to the iPhone 3G.
This is based on assumptions and "hoping for the best," right? Or is this official?

Many people here doubt apple is equipped to determine upgrade eligibility or not. Just because you and a printout from the at&t website say you are eligible, apple likely does not have access to at&t's accounting files which would say definitely yes or no, so your best bet is to go to the at&t store.

This launch on Friday has disaster written all over it.
I have never seen so much consumer confusion and dissatisfaction before a product launch; from the unknown pricing (ie if you're eligible for the upgrade price of $199 or not) as well as where to buy it from - we don't even know if some of us can buy it from the Apple Store or AT&T stores! Credit checks at the apple store???? WTF is that all about.
Add this to the emerging revolt of consumers to the price gauging by the phone companies around the world, phone bills over the next month far exceeding anyones expectations due to excess data charges, and this may possibly be the best example of how NOT to launch a product! From such positive consumer sentiment last year due to the simplicity, ease of purchase and activation, this year will be quite the opposite. Share price heading south Monday. 10 million units this year - if the current situation continues - no way!
Don't be surprised if we see a price drop on the non-subsidized price back to the old price of $399/$499 before the next 3 months is up, as well as memory bump to 32GB with the iPod/Touch updates in September.

well think about the people who don't read these sites. All they see are the ads that say $199. they have no idea about upgrade eligibility, contracts, etc... All they know is that the new iphone is coming on friday for $199.
Many people will be angry friday. I am hoping to get in and out of the mall early to avoid most of the drama. I'm going to a mall with both an AT&T store and an apple store. I'm an at&t iphone customer so I think I'll be fine at either place, so I'm going wherever the line is shorter. (i'll be waiting outside the mall for the doors to open before opening time)

I just called AT&T. The rep. brought up my account and was looking directly at the record for my phone. While I am within two years, she confirmed that I am eligible for a discounted upgrade (ie. the subsidized iPhone price). She said that Apple Stores will have access to the exact same records AT*T stores will have, so they will "definitely" (her word) be able to see that I am eligible for an upgrade. She DID say that the Apple stores will be a bit more limited when it comes to "trickier" upgrades and such, but straight forward cases will not be a problem.
Hope that helps some people make their decision. I know I will be at my local Apple Store.

Wow I can't believe that lots of people have already decided that Friday will be a disaster. At this point, I really think this is unfounded. I know there are still a lot of questions and misinformation out but it's only Monday! I know everyone is saying every cell phone purchase ever has taken 45 minutes or longer but THIS IS APPLE! Give them the benefit of the doubt. They didn't produce a phone like anyone else, why can't they have another new, innovative activation process set for Friday? Apple has rarely ever done things like everyone else, so why would the launch be any different? I could very likely be eating my words on Friday and it could be a disaster. But, hey, lets wait and see before you call me a fool...

We are worried because Apple isn't the one responsible for the activation and contract signing process, AT&T is and we all know that AT&T makes things as difficult and complicated as they possibly can. Combine that with the fact that you will have an entire staff who has never set up cell phone contracts before doing it for their first time with a massive amount of customers all wanting an iPhone on the same day. They are going to have to come up with a radical plan to deal with the in-store activation or else its going to be a mess.
I still want to buy my iPhone at an Apple Store, but I fear that its not going to be a pretty sight.

YES that's the point. It is only Monday and only freaks like us are reading all these details. Most civilians in the world think they can prance into the store friday and simply pay 199 and done. Many will be upset to find out that day (since they are no reading this crap online all week) that that is not always the case. They all read last month about Steve Jobs telling the World that the iPhone is half the price. He didn't say that it was only cheaper for a chosen few million and not everyone.

I agree that it doesn't look good and that yes the majority of people will be uninformed. My only point is that it's still possible for Apple to have something up their sleeve to speed things up. That's all I'm trying to say. I'm just trying to be optimistic about it for once (which is extremely rare for me). Like I said, I'm probably wrong, but you can't just outright deny that Apple might have something yet. Lets just wait it out. If it's Thursday night and I still don't know what time my Apple store is opening, then I will be freaking out lol jk. I'm going to the AT&T store now anyways since my buddy isn't eligible for an upgrade.

I just signed up for service w AT&T over the weekend in advance of the iPhone. What a mess. About a simple a AT&T signup as you could wish for... just single line, minimum plan, no options nothing. Plain vanilla.
Their accounting system screwed up. They'd enter all my info, everything would be fine, going to return a phone number, their screen goes blank then says it can't find an application, can't find any of the info. The salesman calls their support, they're no help. He goes through the whole process a second time. Same thing. Calls support again. They do it. They run into the same thing. He says this is a known problem happens sometimes. But if he gives me a number in a neighboring city it will go through! Argh!
45 minutes later I walk out with a phone and a number from a neighboring city. There was NO ONE else in the store. Just the salesman and the manager trying to help out too. They both seemed smart and knowledgeable.
Friday will be a mess... and I'll be there.

Yes, I'm anxious about this too. I have a 1st Gen IPhone that I've been using on T-Mobile since Sept. '07. I spoke with a T-Mobile rep last week and they didn't foresee any problems with me using IPhone 3G (unlocked) on T-Mobile's USA 3G network.
One detail I'm trying to get confirmation on is the fate of the current AT&T non-iPhone users. Those people need to qualify for upgrade eligibility and may need to go to AT&T stores to get an iPhone 3G.

I just called the Tysons Corner, VA and Pentagon City, VA Apple Stores and asked them if I do NOT qualify for a subsidized upgrade and am currently an AT&T customer, could I still buy one for 399/499 at the Apple Store and both told me I would have to go through AT&T because Apple is only dealing with subsidized Iphones. That is the potential wrinkle with me as well. I didn't mention it since it wasn't relevant to the idea of seeing upgrade status. But since you bring it up: my wife is listed as the account owner (family plan, her phone and my phone) and I am an authorized person on the account. The ATT rep confirmed that I am authorized to upgrade my phone. She said there will be no issue in an ATT store to prove I am authorized. She said there SHOULD be no issue at the Apple store, but if there is, I should have the Apple salesperson call ATT to confirm. I hate the idea of making things take longer, but she assured me that it really shouldn't be an issue, that my name is listed on the account.

whoever you talked to said that because that is what they think will happen.

Why do people seem to think existing customers would be better off at AT&T stores? I am going to an Apple store and am an existing customer. I would think the steps for that would be easier, especially if the activation only version of iTunes is like what we used at home. You enter the existing customers information, slap the data plan on the line and send them packin'...
I agree with you. If you have ever experienced buying a phone at an AT&T store (anything but iPhone), its a horrible experience. I have never really had a bad experience in an Apple store. AT&T people are a bunch of morons. If you have a choice, go to an Apple store.

Sadly the iPhone has been the most news we (Mac users) have had for well over a year, thats what I am complaining about, the lack of "Mac" news.

Does anyone know if its possible to establish a new phone number and then port my current number at a later date or are you stuck with that number until the contract expires? Might be an AT&T question. But I thought I'd ask here incase other people have the same ques.
You can BUY your new iPhone on Friday and then WAIT until the 14th when your Verizon contract expires to port your number. Just call AT&T Customer Support on the 14th (but NOT before) and tell them you want to port your number from Verizon to replace your existiing AT&T number.

Actually in this day and age it is cheaper to for large companies to take a credit card than cash. The cost of having someone come collect the money from all the stores and deal with it is very costly, also their is next to no risk with credit cards, people cant hold you at gun point and demand money that was paid by credit card.
Don't forget about the super iTunes rate apple has negotiated with the credit card companies...
This makes it even cheaper

haha aw man, that sounds exactly like what my girlfriend has been telling me. Well besides camping info I'll toss out my convoluted account situation and see if anyone has a suggestion:
I have AT&T with a non local number (# from IL and I'm in NY) and I have been out of contract for a few years (I always managed to find phones without using AT&T subsidized upgrades) but the account is currently in my fathers name. I want to try to keep my number, but sign a contract in my own name while getting the iphone. Anyone know how to work that magic?
I have talked to a few different AT&T reps and they have all had something different to say. Worse comes to worse I'll just sign a new contract on Friday and give up my number if I really have to.
Since the account is in your father's name, BOTH of you will need to complete a Change of Financial Responsibilbity in order for the account and phone number to be changed over to you (assuming you are over 18). You WILL also need to pass a credit check in order to take over the account. And once the account has been transferred to you, it will be considered a "new" account and you will qualify for a subsidized iPhone. By the way, they will assign you a new account number with the old phone number provided you pass the credit check.

Mac news websites aren't the only place people can find information about an iPhone. There's information about the pricing plans and eligibility on AT&T's website as well, and since it would be current AT&T customers who have a question about eligibility they have plenty of information available to them. Non-AT&T customers wouldn't know what the original data rate plan was so they would also check this out on the website. Which I'm certain anyone who's planning on purchasing the iPhone on Friday has already done. I don't know many people who would go through the hassle without knowing what they're getting themselves into.
And things won't be complicated if people don't make it that way. Everyone has these crazy what-if and should-I questions that really don't need to be addressed when you buy the phone. AT&T has a 30 day trial period (at least they did when they were Cingular. I assume it's still in effect) so anyone who has signed up for an account after June 12th will still be eligible. As for porting your number, unless you got a phone I'm not sure what they're porting it to. And if you're switching plans on Friday, I would just take the new number from AT&T and then port your old number later. When I originally signed up for AT&T I still had a few weeks left on my Verizon account, so I just did call forwarding to my new phone until my account expired, then ported the number after my contract ended. The only problem I had was people seeing the new number when I called them back.
If you're not certain about whether or not Apple stores will be able to handle your situation, go to an AT&T store. Or wait a day or two and see what other people are saying. I would say it's a pretty good bet that people who don't follow Mac news don't know about the unsubsidized pricing. And those that do probably know from calling AT&T who hopefully encouraged them to go to an AT&T store. That's really the only foreseeable snag I can think of. They should be able to do everything else.
And I don't think pay-as-you-go is considered under contract. But since you can't get a contract you wouldn't be eligible for a subsidized phone. Same with people who are eligible but don't want to sign another contract. That's how it is for any phone from any cell phone provider.
