I can't wait to see what the new ones look like, I'm in the market for a new computer but with the macbook air's having the core shutdown issues and the macbook pro's having their graphics issues, I started looking at the macbook. But oh wait, those crack. So really what's left?

I'm waiting for the next generation apple laptops before I make a purchase. Hopefully we will see big changes in all of Apple's laptops in the next 6 months. :D

I have to say that out of the 3 laptops Apple makes, the MacBook has the best quality and best engineered.
I even have a Core Duo MacBook that's over two years old and it hasn't cracked on me or had any problems. It's still going strong and I call it: "PowerPC-Intel Mac". ;)

Thanks, I use a sony now and want a laptop and the other Mac's dont really fit my needs so I guess I will wait for the new ones, just ordered a mini also and have been waiting a month for that :( so here is another wait.
I have used a Macbook Air and when you hit Flash it a nightmare, also want a user replaceable battery.

low end - 2.26Ghz Montevina
high end - 2.53Ghz Montevina

both processors should run cooler + more efficiently = battery life++
DDR2 800Mhz
hopefully LED screens!

I'm all over a new MacBook too! I wanna get the low end one & bump the HDD to one of OCZ's new cheap SSD (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/5983593/-/Product.html?searchstring=ocz+64gb&searchsource=0)'s!... OK maybe not cheap..

That link makes it sound like it won't have montevina...or am I misreading it?

August 18th sounds amazing. I hope it's true. Actually, I hope the MBP comes out at the same time, so I can compare.

I believe we are looking at September 16th. I predict that date, from research on other websites. Also I think there will be other product's released in that time-frame. They often create the Holiday line-up around that time. I wasn't planning on waiting... But now after those photo's released were from Appleinsder.com, my plans have changed.

If they are going to redesign the case, they'll at least try to fix this problem.

Until then, I'm going to go out on a limb and say no. The problem has been around for however long and they've not fixed it.

What were your sources?

No sources; his logic (I'm guessing) is that September 16 is the day after the end of Apple's Back-To-School sale event (which is active June 3-Sept 15).

The idea is that Apple is using the Back-To-School event to clear out existing inventory and would not introduce anything new until at least after this period.

Are you sure they are including the LED screens in the next update?

The screens are what I'm waiting for before purchasing. I couldn't care about the trackpad or case, as long as the screen's are switched to LEDs, I'll be fine with whatever else they do to it...except maybe make Vista their new OS...

First of all, everything anyone tells you is pure speculation. people speculated forever about the new iphone, days before it's announcement and they were still wrong about a ton of things including release date, video chat and bluetooth stereo. things that seemed so obvious were omitted. No one knows when or what will be in the release, but what we do know is that the current version of the macbook is a great machine and anyone would be luck to own it. There will always be something new just around the corner, you can not wait forever. It kills me that people with celeron processors are complaining about not being able to wait for the new intel chips. Anything up from a Celeron will be amazing and anything higher from what is currently available will only be modestly noticeable. You need to stop speculating and decide if you want this one. I THINK that the new macbook won't be released until January, or September the earliest... after the promo has ended. Just buy one now because it is a great laptop, cheap, discounted, and with applecare, in 2 years, if it starts misbehaving, you can bring it in and have it replaced with the than current macbook. Trust me. And if you really need to have the best, buy one now, get the free ipod and printer, than just sell it when the new one comes out.

I think an appropriate date for the MBs to be updated would be in late August, or the first week of september. The last generation of MacBooks (using the Santa Rosa platform and Penryn processors) were released on the 26th of February, while the actual Penryn Processors were released on the 6th of January, i.e. the MacBooks were updated a month and 2 weeks after the processor came out to market. The upcoming Montevina platform is scheduled (rather, delayed) to come out on the July 14th, along [verification needed] with the new Penryn Processors T9400 and the T9600 (2.53Ghz and 2.8Ghz respectively, both having 6MB cache, in contrast with the current 3MB cache in the MBs). So, in my opinion, Apple will update the current line of MacBooks with these configurations, which will take Apple about a month and a half to update. Well, this is my 2 cents.
Btw, I didn't consider the student promos etc so Apple might have a plan to release these cute white and black beasties later on after the promo this year.

The difference is that the new iPods were not eligible for the promotion only old stock. The iMacs were brand new and you could get the iPod with it. (That's what I did last year).

I agree, yet disagree. I think that you are going to see that this may be a little different thanks to Intel snafu with the FCC. I think they maybe able to produce them without shipping them without FCC approval which means that people could have orders in. Also Apple was most likely ready to start putting the chips in back in June before that little mix up so I'm assuming that you will see the release a little sooner. Just a guess, I'm not really sure how the whole thing works, all I know is that other computer manufacturers have received the new chips.

I doubt that computer manufacturers such as Apple would actually use any products which are non-FCC compliant. Even if they shipped the chips to Apple, Apple would (or rather should) return the non-FCC compliant chips and claim the non-FCC approved chips to be switched with the new FCC approved ones.

There is a facebook group called "Apple Students," and there was a whole discussion topic about when the new macbooks might be coming out...

This is what the post says:

"I have a feeling Apple is doing an Update, my school has a contract with them and currently the link to Apple from my school site is unavailable. Of course this could be nothing, but my school did post that pre-orders for Fall
'08 laptops would not be taken until July 16th. So I think some sort of update is coming."

This might mean that macbooks could be available as early as this upcoming week, at least for preorder.

I am new to this, but I have been following macrumors for a while to try and get a clue as to when the newest macbooks will be available so I can buy one for college. This news could be getting my hopes up, but I think it is very exciting!

No, actually no computer manufacturer can sell computers with chips that are not FCC approved but I think Intel can ship them but the computers cannot be distributed until FCC approval. So what I'm saying is I can see a bunch of Macbooks just waiting to be shipped once the FCC gives the go ahead to Intel... This is really just me talking I don't know the politics of it all.

This doesn't make sense. If the chips were not approved by the FCC in the beginning, why would they approve the chips two weeks (or whatever the time lapse is) after? If something is wrong, you cannot say it is right just because a month passed. Even if the chips are in the hands of Apple, they're still and will still be non-FCC approved until Intel ships another batch of FCC approved Montevina chips. All I can see is that Intel modifies the chip to suit the FCC rules until the FCC approves it, then Intel ships the chips to computer manufacturers.

The problem with FCC certification applies only to the wireless chipset - and then only when running in 802.11n (it is approved by the FCC to run in 802.11a/b/g).

Apple will not use this chipset in any Mac Pro, Mac Mini, MacBook or MacBook Pro. So FCC certification is not holding up Apple releasing new MacBook (Pros).

This is interesting! Sony just announced its new Vaio laptop to be released on July 14th. I'm pretty sure it's sporting the new Montevina chip, since the FSB is 1066 MHz and the clock speed goes up to 2.53 GHz. So if Sony is announcing this laptop right on Montevina launch date, is it possible that the chips are FCC approved?

I think the iPhone attracted more people to apple (even windows lovers) and with the upgrade of the macbook more people might be interested in it since they own de iPhone 3G (or 2G). It would be brilliant timing.

They wouldn't need an event unless the case was completely redesigned, you're right. They didn't have an event for the original debut of the MacBook because of the similarities between the iBook case. The aluminum iMacs were a transition from plastic, and therefore got a keynote. If there's just a spec update, and if the "leaked" pictures of an easy-access HDD MacBook Pro are true, then it'll be a silent update. Silent as in no keynote.

But... This will be a case upgrade on the MBP and the MB since the introduction of the MBP. So I don't see how Apple wouldn't use a keynote to unveil new designs, even if they are slight. Anyway, I think Apple will want to give attention to the laptops since it is getting close to back-to-school.

They could be doing a silent update now, for the new chipset and then a rehaul in November-January where there would be a case redesign

It doesn't say anywhere, nor is there proof that the case will be changed for this update.

Seriously...show me where it says they are changing the case this update and prove me wrong.

Yes there are leaked photos, but that doesn't mean we're gonna be seeing it now and not in 4 months time.

The macbook is the best computer or laptop I've ever had. However its had some major issues that have really made me reconsider buying one next time round;

1. The top and bottom of the macbook were not perfectly in line when I got the macbook, but I was assured this is normal. But eventually this caused cracks within the casing.
2. MagSafe charger turned out to be just the opposite, and burnt down and melted the wiring. This potentially could have been a fire hazzard.
3. And this is the deal-breaker; Every few months there will be a software update which will totally ruin the wifi connectivity for weeks on end. This problem has been apparant on the macbook for 2 years, yet apple have not managed to figure it out. Go to the Official Macbook forum on the apple website and you'll see hundreds of threads with people having this issue.

Windows PCs/Laptops may be awful but atleast its repairable, and I'm not reliant on apple to fix it "eventually" (or in certain cases never)

Don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic machine, and its changed the way I live. But I would rather have the countless annoyances of running windows, than the major issues the macbook suffers from.

I've been obsessing about this as of late...

I NEED this update, this redesign, soon! Please Apple, c'mon. For the sake of my sanity.

I've also been obsessing. But I'm not sure if I'd rather have a faster chipset with Montevina or have that plus a case redesign.

The upside of an upgrade is having the latest and the greatest if there is a case redesign. It will be very nice and will look and probably be amazing. The downside is, as a Rev A, it will probably be incredibly buggy.

Depending on exactly what it is, I may step down for a cheaper, less buggy, more complete plastic MB. Plus, with plastic, you get a much greater wifi reception. Which is handy when you have to leach it for free from the college you live right next to or the club house hopefully your room is close too.

Just have to wait and see what happens.

Well today is the day Montevina is being released, so if there are updates of any kind, we should hear about them soon enough.

If nothing is updated by the second week of August, I am buying what is out now (and I will be happy knowing I waited as long as I could have), but until then I am going to be waiting and hopeful.

I think they fixed the wifi issue with by changing the frames to have a little plastic corner like the iPod Touch. Look at the released casings for the Macbook Pro, you'll see it in the upper left hand corner of the bottom piece.

Personally, I'm waiting until I have enough money (should be around second or third week of August if nothing comes up), but until then, I'm trying to work up the reason to wait until the updates come out if they take a long time. If there's a case redesign then by waiting and buying the previous model, you can save several hundred bucks or could have a cooler newer model for pretty much the same price. I'm just trying to convince myself to wait and see. It's really hard though. I want it sooner than that.

I have the money now and honestly I want to start enjoying it asap. I have been to my daughters skate camp, where they have free wifi.

It's bothering me knowing that while I'm sitting there for a few hours, I could enjoy touching up my music collection or reading the news with a cup of coffee in hand.

Note, That I am using a 4 year old Dell Dimension 8400 desktop computer. It's bigger than hell, and taking up much needed room at my desk at home.

Anyhow, I will buy one no later than the first week of August more than likely. I also want the free ipod touch too. I love the wifi on that thing. If the major rediesign happens at Macworld 2009 than I will upgrade 6 months from now to the LED Macbook.

I am thinking about going with an 20 inch iMac for now and a new Macbook in Jan '09.

What do you all think?

It's a great time to buy an iMac (it was very recently updated), and the Macbook should be updated by January, as well as the comments in so your can evaluate it.

I'd go with a high-end 20" iMac. My Dad got the same (he couldn't fit a 24" screen on his computer desk, so went with the best 20" one), and has been really happy with it. The screen really is good.

And I can't wait to see the new Macbooks and MBP's.

Im so anxious to see what the design will look like. Apple design team is just awesome. Every time i feel something is going to look horrible, i see it in person and its breath-taking. I hope the macbooks look a bit more sophisticated, while the new MBPs look so 'pro' and expensively awesome!

we have waited so long, they better be worth the wait.

I was using a 13" MacBook yesterday and I found that from where I was standing (I was Best Buy), the MacBook screen seemed very hard to read and see. Was it because I was standing over it?

When I used the new 24" iMac I was in awe of the crisp and clarity of the screen. It's an amazing computer.

I love my MBP screen. It, to me, seems crisper, but it is a matte screen. my macbook however is also very crisp but the gloss of the screen i think effects it, and you get the negative effect when you look from the side.

overall they are great screens. it must have been because you were standing over it, and you started to get the negative effect.

Jak3
Jul 15, 2008, 10:59 AM
yeah, screens are designed to be viewed at a 90 degree angle up to about 75 degrees in any direction, anything more that and you get the wierd "negative" effect where colours start to look different. Depending on whether the screen is matte or glossy can have an effect and older screens tend to have a smaller than 75 degree viewing angle, so it's not a freak occurence you are seeing.

Thanks for getting back to my post. I couldn't find this thread because I forgot where I posted.

I've been tracking the iMac since August 2007, and seen the various updates as well as leapord coming out. I am very eager to get one or the other.

I am definetly on board for a 20 inch iMac. I will probably take your advice and go with the high end 20 inch iMac. But that's only if the Macbook doesn't get a redesign.

My deal is that I want a Macbook now and then buy an iMac in 6 months or vice versa. I love Apple computers. Just amazing.

Thanks for your post. If the Macbook get's an update without the LED screen then I'm getting the imac. If the LED makes it then I will go with a Macbook.

I forgot to mention that I'm posting from a 17 inch Dell Monitor. I hate this freakin thing.

Hello, I'm going to be a college student and I want to buy a macbook too.
While I was looking for further information about macbook I found some news in wich was comunicated that the new Macbook will be later because Intel had some problems in the developing of the new integrated graphic chips (GMA), wich macbook should have, for the Montevina processor. So,does it mean that probably we will see Macbook out for the period of Christmas ?
I dont remember exactly the link for the new, but im trying to find it in the history of the browser :)

P.S. Sorry for my bad english and for all of my mistake :) I will be happy If someone wants to correct me

This is sort of true, but a little back dated. :) The July release (i.e. today's release) is the delayed date. However, Montevina is out now and some companies already have everything (new specs, prices, etc.) posted.

Hi everyone:

I really need a laptop and printer for school (I move in on August 24), and the free printer deal end next week (July 21). If I were to buy a macbook and get the printer for free (and the free iPod) and not open the macbook, would I be able to return the macbook, get the newer model (when it comes out), and keep the printer and iPod?

I am planning to order the macbook on July 21 so I can get the printer rebate. Would I be able to return it (unopened) when the new ones come out in exchange for the newer model?

If not, then it is okay and I will just keep it and be happy, but I want to know if it is even a possibility, and if it what the details of my plan should be.

Thanks in advance!

You would be able to return and exchange if the update comes out within fourteen days. You would rescind your eligibility for both promotions, however.

I know what you mean. I was on vacation in San Francisco for a week and the only computer access was when I walked down two blocks to the apple store. I went there everyday (each day getting on a macbook) and messing around with other products, I was in heaven. I am in desperate need for a computer because mine seems to be falling apart (or that could be windows) so right now I'm running on Linux haha.

Then while you're waiting, why don't you just save up for a MBP? There's a chance they won't do the case redesign to aluminum for MBs at all. We're really only guessing and honestly have no real evidence (except one picture) at all that either will be redesigned, especially the MBs..

I'm also considering doing this also (saving up for a MBP while I'm waiting for updates). Just depends on how things play out and when there actually is an update. Also if I'd rather spend my money on something else or not.

Never. Apple is getting out of the computer biz as soon as rest of the unwanted mac minis, junk Time Capsules, yellow screen iMacs and striped screen MPBs dribble out of the warehouse. They will then go in to the flying iCar biz with Volkswagon. Rumors speak of an iToilet in the near future. This may be delayed however, as it was planned to use four year old Nvidia video cards. This will be followed by an update to ACDs in 2030.

The parts cost essentially the same.

Apple gets into trouble when potential switches go with a new Dell with its faster processor speeds (the biggest thing that the average customer notices) and all its advertising with new extended battery life, with the experts whispering in their ear "There are other improvements under the hood too," and then they hear from someone that you can't "game" on a MacBook.

So I've got quite a dilemma as many of us here apparently have: to wait or buy now. There are a couple issues/things I have to consider, firstly I'm leaving on Aug. 13th for Hungary, where I'll be living/studying until late December, and then of course there are the apple issues.

I want a MacBook, want a free iPod touch, and want it while I'm in Hungary. From what I'm reading it seems about 95% certain that I won't be able to get an updated MacBook before I head off, which is a huge bummer. For me the most important things in the potential update are the better integrated graphics (if apple includes this), LED screen (if apple includes this), new case design (I'm a design-o-phile and obviously want the new one regardless as to whether it's more practical to me... go figure... again if apple includes this). I suppose the CPU performance increase is nice, but not a terribly big deal, and as this is the only thing we really really know for sure will happen with the update, so be it.

Also, I'm pretty sure for me a free iPod touch >> updated MacBook. So if the update occurs after Sept. 15 I'm definitely getting a MacBook today... Unfortunately I can't tell the future.

Basically, if I did wait, which I probably won't, I'd have my parents send it to Hungary if the update was after I left. And I'm just trying to weigh how badly I need a new computer (I have a beastly 17" Dell laptop that weighs over 9000 pounds -- thus I don't want to take it overseas, especially as I won't be able to bring it to/from classes, which won't be near my apartment).

Also, I hate making big decisions, for fear that the new update will be so badass I'll be kicking myself for months knowing I could have had it had I waited an extra couple of weeks/months/whatever.

If only Apple could... tell us something... anything!

If only Apple could... tell us something... anything!

They "could" tell us a lot--but they won't until they're about ready to sell the suckers!

Seriously, if you're going to be in Hungary (how extensive is the Mac support network there?), it may be more prudent to get a (basically) rock solid MacBook in the existing model rather than grab and dash with an unknown quantity like the Rev. A version of whatever's coming next week/next month/sometime before Christmas. If there's some major glitch, and you're one of the unlucky, you'll be spending your time with replacements, shipping, customs hassles, etc. instead of enjoying a new country and cracking down on your studies. Your call.

Is there really going to be any problem if Apple just replaces the MacBook's plastic case with an aluminium case and with the new Montevina platform?

Yeah, I'm in the same boat (except for the whole studying in Hungary thing). Wait or not, that's the question. I'm going to circle a date on the calendar (Aug. 8, probably, if you're listening up there, Mr. Jobs), and then pull the trigger. Seems like the update is right around the corner. Anybody else here shy away from Rev. A MacBooks? Should I do the same and just get one now?

I like things new, fresh from the oven.. who doesn't? ;)

but on a rational viewpoint, technologial stuffs like these might not wise to get the first batch... I actually prefer bug-free high productive products, and current latest probably last of line MB and MBP design seem to be the best bet... but who can resist the rumoured LED screen? the top priority in my wish list...

I still can't think straight though.. if I follow the above, I could have gotten the MB weeks ago.. since I am already waited so sometime, maybe sometime longer still viable.. I have a camp coming this week, at least that takes this off my mind for another week... :)

Now explain why Europe gets high mileage diesel cars and the US doesn't.

Because Europe uses smaller cars, manual transmission, and diesel in the long run is a lot better then regular...also, their fuel is much more refined...I think the minimum is a octane level of 95, while ours is like 85.

I'm also in a dilemma. I want a macbook. I was planning on purchasing it during tax free weekend in North Carolina, which happens to fall on August 1-3 this year.

I'm hoping the update happens on the 29th. But what if the update happens on the 5th. Is is better to buy the new laptop minus the tax savings or get the current laptop with the tax savings.

Thanks.

I wonder how this would affect the new Macbooks we're anticipating.

Isn't Sony's Z series (with a form factor in between the MacBook and the Air) due in August?

I'm unfamiliar with the "cut-off" so to speak for the "Small Form Factor." Do all 13.3" laptops require this, whereas 15" (and larger) laptops use the normal form factor version? Or what?

Am I wrong, or is it safe to say that Apple keeps the main page of their website consistent for an average of two weeks before changing it to something new?

If so, today (the 25th) marks exactly two weeks since the iPhone main page ad has been up on the website, and it is time for a change! New MacBooks, anyone???

What I have also heard about Seth Weintraub is that he is good with his predictions but sometimes does not get the entire thing correct--so he could be correct about the new design but incorrect about the time of release, which is what I am hoping for. But I know that no matter what Apple product I get, I am going to be happy with, so it's all good. I just want to know that I waited as long as I possibly could.

Why are all you jokers saying you need a new Macbook before you leave for college? What, you have NO laptop at this time? Is that even allowed on most campuses these days? (seriously) And Apple doesn't deliver to your college?

I always find this reasoning so silly. You can go to college with the laptop you have and make it for a few days. Or you can buy a Macbook now and then sell it at a $100 loss in a month on Ebay - consider it a one month rental for $100.

I need it, I need it. Please.

I don't think it will come out in August. Stop spreading around that rumor because 1) the blog dude said it should be late September 2) why shoudl Apple release it, when it would upset a bunch of people who bought hte older crappier MacBook a day before to even 2 months beforehand? 3) Whyw ould they want to give a free ipod with a brand new macbook.

It will be at least the end of septembre so that the people who bought the macbook and ipod touch deal can't excahnge the macbook for the new one (the 14 day policy deal).

hey guys a little info from my source (not sure if its for sure or not). News macbooks will have a touch screen keyboard like interface. think like the nintendo DS laptop version, bigger screens of course. essentially it will have two screens, one of which is "touchable" basically all the multitouch features and surface like functionality. so again im not sure it this is for real, or an idea thrown around among the designers. we'll just have to wait and see huh?

eh, I think something like that would definitely be cool and have it's perks, but I don't know - I like having the feedback I get when typing on a REAL keyboard.

honestly

even if there is a change in the way the laptop looks, slightly increased cpu, probably same amount of ram, and stupid glasspad.

Nothing special.

Moving on.

It would make better sense to liquidate the old ones in the school sales with the schools opening and then unleash the new ones.

...then I'm afflicted. I know of no college students who don't have a laptop or can't get by during the first week without one. The "I need one before college starts" argument is silly.

Indeed, this whole obsession with when the next Apple product is going to come out - being preoccupied by it - is silly. It shows just how much consumerism has taken over our lives and our identities are defined by owning the latest newest.

There are a lot of people thts don't own laptops out there...

But I agree with you on your second point, too much obsession with people wanting the latest and greatest. But im sure 90% of the population thats has a life actually doesn't care about havng the latest and greatest and will buy what ever appeals to them at the time.

Indeed..I have Macbook black..very good piece of machinery..and i as well think probably the best macbook available..it's smaller and lighter then the pro but performes better then the air..well designed and a perfect match of both extremes..

My family owns both a Macbook and Macbook Pro, and the Macbook Pro kills the Macbook with efficiency. The fan will come on in a matter of minutes on the Macbook, depending on what your doing, your situation could be different. As I said before (page 2), I predicted around September 16th. I also have suspensions of Apple not using Intel as the processor maker. Who knows about the glass track pad or not? O_o

Been playing around with the MacBooks regularly at work (I work at Best Buy) and I've found that they are pretty decent performance wise, but the MacBook Pro is definitely a faster machine depending on what apps you load up, and it looks alot better while doing it.

I'm going to be making my purchase for my first year at University aswell. As far as I've been told, I won't be needing a laptop inside my classes. Instead I will probably be using it while I'm in the library waiting for my next class or when I'm at home doing homework, organizing my notes, etc.

Besides, nowadays most lectures are recorded by professors and put up on a host so that students can download them, so you don't need a mic or device to record the lectures in class anymore.

I can confirm that our MacBook stock at our store is quite low, which is odd considering were gearing up for a VERY busy back to school season, and laptops sell like hotcakes; but as far as I know there's no information thats been given to our store regarding any new products from Apple.

I will probably purchase a MacBook because I'm not a power user by any length of the imagination. I have a external DVD-RW which I rarely use, but it will do the job if I ever need to burn movies from my MacBook. For surfing the web, chatting online, listening to music, and doing projects, I think the base level MacBook will be fine for most University students.

My only gripe with the MacBook is its screen and how its really tough to see clearly depending on your angle of position. Maybe its just the way they sit inside our store...

Some of the "who cares" comments are retarded and narrow minded.
For most people buying a laptop at this price is a huge deal & investment, and they want the satisfaction they are not buying an out-dated piece of kit, especially as its meant to last them a few years. Not all of us having money growing in our back garden, and do want the best item out there.

well said. if im gonna buy a new computer for $1k+, why not get the latest, even though it'll eventually be replaced anyway, i think that as long as you can wait for the new one, then by all means wait. Me personally may choose to wait till right before the b2s special to see whats gonna happen. if its more logical to get the old one with the free touch versus the new gen. 1 macbook without the free iPod and slightly increased specs/looks, then i'll probably go for the old one and get the free iPod. And to comment on the "need a laptop for college" statements, i recently started college, and for alot of things, a computer, no matter laptop or desktop, should be easily accessible cause, depending on the school you attend, you'll be spending a lot of time on them anyway, and no one wants to be in the school library all day. so i think a laptop is not necessarily needed, but a computer should be had anyway.

Oh yeah, I definitely agree that if you are buying an investment, you obviously want the latest and greatest, especially if you can get it cheaper or at the same price as the old product. If I buy a current MacBook and Apple releases a aluminum MacBook with same specs a couple weeks down the road, I will have regrets and obviously wish I had waited for the much sexier laptop. :p

I've been using my current PC desktop for over 7 years and its still running in pristine condition. I expect my Mac to be just as solid of a machine! :)

Computer is necessary for college/university, it's just you don't really need a laptop, as long as you have a computer (whether its a laptop or a desktop) at home that is yours, and only your files are on it and you have access whenever you need it, you should be fine.

I'd have to call bull on that one. I think the GREAT majority of people here would be disappointed if they bought a new macbook and found out two weeks later it was replaced by a new model. Yes, you're still the owner of a nice machine, but could've been the owner of a sexy new macbook model.

Could some one settle once and for all whether Apple have ever released a new product DURING the Back to School Promo. If not have they ever released a new product the DAY AFTER the Back to School Promo. If not how long afterwards do they release a product.

Initially, I believed they would never release a new product during the promotion but others have been saying that Apple have a history of releasing new products during the Promotion.

Can someone settle this?

They released the Aluminum iMacs during the B2S promotion last year. They could do it again, this time with the MacBooks and I wouldn't be surprised.

Depends really. Im getting it for uni too.
If you can buy it during Uni, then you might as well wait, because most people spend the first few weeks partying rather than working lol. Also most Unis will have plenty of PCs to work on in the meanwhile.
On the other hand, if you need it from day 1, just by the current Macbook, because its a solid machine now, and far more reliable than a new one will be. Either way you wont lose out.

Its going to be well worth it to wait for the new macbook especially with its led screen =D

I think once the new macbooks go aluminum + led screen + a pound shaved +$200-$300 price drop (another rumor) it'll sell like hot cakes.

For me, I would have bought already but I'm holding out in the hopes that the new MB shaves off a few grams and/or a few millimetres.

Almost bought a MBA - until I heard it's underpowered.
Then almost bought a MB - until I heard new slimmer/lighter models could be coming.

I could really care less about the screen or aluminum. It's for my wife for her bday on August 28 so I hope it'll be here in time :)

This is interesting info. Among all the various "when's the next one coming?" bits of voodoo (yes, I admit I'm a junkie), store inventory has historically been one of the more reliable indicators.

My only gripe with the MacBook is its screen and how its really tough to see clearly depending on your angle of position. Maybe its just the way they sit inside our store...

I've looked at these at about three megastores and the AppleStore. At one of the megastores, the MacBook screens looked very washed out, murky, thru-a-dirty-fish-tank kind of effect. At the other places, with similar lighting, they looked fine.

As mentioned various times here, there are four or five display makers of varying quality. Though also as mentioned here you can make big improvements by playing with the display calibration control panel. Since I need to order online thru AppleJapan (to get a US keyboard) and can't buy in a store, would be impossible to ensure that I get the top-rated LG display. Will be interested in seeing the displays on the "September Surprise" MBs.

I'll find out how many MacBooks, and MacBook Pros we have in stock. That will give some sort of insight on the levels of stock available at the moment. If theres a significant amount, that will point towards new notebooks will be release in September.

If theres low stock levels, that means we should expect an update soon, right?

(I didn't every thread)

I will say my Macbook is built pretty well and I love it. I would say that if you like the white apple look, that now is the time get a Macbook. If the next one is aluminum, bye bye white/black. :(

As for cracks, if you let the lid slam down, day after day, it will crack, which is unfortunate. They will replace the wrist rest. I close mine slowly. Not a scratch or crack yet. :D

apple stores have no clue when updates are coming, even days before. It is pretty obvi why....all you need is one worker to go macrumors.com and boom. spread like wildfire. From apple's standpoint..there really isnt a need to let stores know before hand..the only thing they need to do is learn up on it and that can be done after they are announced or the time directly leading up to the release. If its a major release (actual new features..not just faster speeds and more memory) I think apple will annouce it and then annouce the release date.

2 weeks after ipod promotion ends...annoucement
actual selling - Early October

With back to school stock is low on most laptops, so to be honest it's not that different from any other laptops at the moment. Apple notebooks to tend to sell slower in my location compared to PC notebooks. Usually a person coming into buy a Mac, has already made up their mind prior to entering the store.

There could be more MacBooks on there way in a truck, or the next shipment could be anywhere in the next 2-4 weeks.

Besides you can call in any store and ask them how many units of a certain computer they have, it happens all the time.

My thoughts on the release date:
I don't think Apple means to revive the MacBooks after 15 September because the iPod promotion is then over. The promotion is intended to lower stock on current generation iPods so they can release new ones. It doesn't matter if they use current or next generation Macs for that. Concerning the promotion, the chances of an update before or after the promotion are even. However, with both iPods and MacBooks having a large update, Apple might as well stuff the two revisions into one keynote. If that's the case, we'll have to wait until somewhere in September :(.

Disclaimer: no rights can be derived from this post, as it is pure speculation.....:D

I'm hoping they'll have the x4500 graphics chipset - the ability to play games on the move without burning out your Nvidia 8600 would be good.

A price reduction would be very good too - become more competitive with the rock bottom $500 laptops from Officeworks.

The most MacBook units in one store in all of Canada is 8 units, most stores have around 4 units. But MacBooks don't sell very well here; it's a maximum of one per 3-4 days.
