I opened the "Buy Now" on Apple and it goes to iTunes (yes, I have 7.7) and it says that the iTunes store is temporarily unavailable...I could buy as many songs as I want right now without a problem...help!
I even tried this when I checked for an update on my ipod.

Chill .... I've just solved a Cocoa bug and had a diet coke to celebrate whilst I'm waiting .... although I wouldnt hold your breathe, its gonna get worst before it gets better - the west coast wakes up soon ...
I'm kinda thinking on waiting til tomorrow and getting up especially early to attempt downloading.

It wasnt before lunch it told me the 2.0 was ready to be updated. I kept on getting "iTunes unavailable" messages and like a clot that I am I took the advice from another thread to restart iTunes to get the download ...
and here I am back at 1.1.4. To me that would suggest that the upgrade site it getting so hammered that not even the exchanging of version numbers is getting through sucessfully

Mac users should get a priority download this is ******** that I buy a MacBook Pro and an iPod touch and I can't download a firmware update because everyone else is trying to get it. WTF.
Did you expect them to rush mail you a copy or something?
No but I expected them to give me a time frame when they would have fixed the problem or maybe even waive the 9.95 fee. Apple is usually incredible when it comes to customer support. Just a couple weeks ago I got a new time capsule because my old one had a problem. it worked fine at the store but the guy was like I'm sure youd rather just have a new one.

I just don't think it's a matter of overloaded servers. If that were the case, why does the darn thing keep jumping back and forth between saying there is a new update (2.0) and saying that 1.1.4 is the most current update. If it were simply overloaded servers, I can't imagine it would do that, but rather keep saying that one should try later to get 2.0.
Moreover, wouldn't you think that there would be an error message to the effect of servers being overloaded.
Also, we can't even get to the page that tells us more about 2.0. If it were overloaded servers we could see that, but not go to the step beyond that which would involve actually downloading it.
Face it: Apple has screwed up on their end. It's not simply too many people trying to get it.
Did iPhone users experience this when the 2.0 update was released for them? I have to imagine that there are far more iPhone users than Touch users.

It hasn't even been "available" yet. There wasn't even a legit date/time for the software update. You have alllll dayyyy (11th) to get your download. They have not "screwed up" until the 12th of July dawns upon us and the download is till unavailable. There is much going on today- I'm sure they're not ready yet. You can't expect everything to be perfect and problem free on launch-day. Also, keep your watch on west coast time. It's only 9:43am over there. They have all day to get situated.

i would totally agree with you, except for on apple's website
http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/appstore/
it says you can get it now. this page was quite different this morning but when 8:00 AM rolled around, they claimed it was ready. they should not have updated their site with dead links and that IS a "screw up" regardless of how you look at it.
but now some people are getting through and its letting them get it, making me think it might be due to high server loads because if apple didn't want us to have it yet, no one would have got it, so either they're lying, or somthing phishy is going on over at 100 Infinite loop...

one would think that with all the money they are making selling us this (touch users at least) that they would have enough to pay for servers and bandwidth..... and how could they guess how many people are going to download it wrong. they sold every ipod touch and iphone so they know how many are out there, they should have prepared better. not often does apple dissapoint me, but this is one of those times.

I love Apple, I really do...
But like old girlfriends, they managed to be more of a nostalgic love than an actual "I love you no matter what".
See, Apple has changed quite a bit from that amazing little company they used to be. They've shown greed, failure and horrible management.
But, they always cared about their customers cause that's what made them what they are today.
Lately, Steve has been less than kind to the users, with No real updates to applications that we've been wanting for sometimes years, forcing us to pay for things that's a bit out of the ordinary. Like us Touch Users, are being smacked in the head with the bill for loving our iPods THAT much...
All we get these days is a lame sticker and that's about it. No free apps, (Yet magazines can offer you pretty amazing free pro apps just for picking up their 6 bucks magazine) anymore on their dot mac services or me.com, etc.
They've become greedy and are giving the finger to all the loyal Mac Customers.
Apple will fold and be ruined if they don't stop and appreciate their loyal customers who update their machines every year and buy all the crap they throw at us.
London Papers are already calling the iPhone Release Day a massive failure.
I think it's time for Apple to get their heads out of their a$$'s!
I'm tired of their "WE'RE NUMBER ONE, BEST IN THE WORLD BLAH BLAH AND BLAH!"
How about Apple sits down and spends half a day figuring out what the hell is wrong with the way they release these 'major' releases.
MobileMe is not working, itunes doesn't work, my webpage is on and off, my iPod Touch gets errors, then says it's ready for the 2.0 update and yet it's not. The handling of this event is really very disappointing.
Time for Steve to stop praising Apple so much and just talk about the things they CAN deliver on time.
I don't mind waiting an extra month if that means we can get it right. But with Apple (might be the ADHD thing in Steve), an extra month puts them no where near the deadline, in fact new ideas crop up that never makes the final version and yet still pushed everything to the back seat.
OS X was delayed due to the iPhone, iTunes and iPod is taking up TOO much time and takes away too much precious time in development AND the most important thing of all... QUALITY CONTROL!
I've said this one and I'll say it again, I even said it to Phil, but they can't say much without Steve.
Apple Computers
Hardware / Software
Pro Apps (Final Cut Pro, Aperture etc)
And
Apple Media
iTunes
iPods
iPhone
AppleTV
Software (iMovie, iPhoto, AppleTV etc.)
Same company split into two, dealing with two main things here, devoted to each 100% and not just a little bit!
Two distinct areas dealing with handing and developing for these products.
I'm wondering why Phil never really said anything but smiled. It's not like they are actually doing anything about it. It's a mess!
I've come to the conclusion that I'm no longer in love with Apple... I care about the products cause they're still cool, but those making it aren't treating me right with all the bills and screw ups.
Today I have a nostalgic view on Apple. And today I say, If there was ANYONE out there who could do it better than Apple, I'm there in a heartbeat. I want what Apple used to stand for. So if some company manages to show us the same level of uniqueness as Apple, with a new OS, then I'm open to a different view on my Desktop.
It's sad that those who've been with Apple for soon 20 years, are reminded of how it used to be even when Apple wasn't doing great.
Today it's very different.
iTunes won't save the company... Unless they are cashing in more than they like us to believe and if they do... then WHY won't they split the company into two and focus on the quality rather than quantity.

I do not hate them either... close... but not quite.
I will say that my new 32 gig touch is amazing and it restores some lost faith.
As for Vista.... I do not and will not own it. I have been a very happy XP Pro user for about 6 years now. It is the only Windoze OS that I have found insanely stable !
I only use it about 5-10% of the time. OS X, the rest.
Anyhow, Apple should not treat the touch as an iPhone. We should have received the 2.0 Touch update earlier. Why should we have to wait for the iPhone release ?
This would have cut down on any server bandwidth issues.

I may be naive here, but how will splitting the company into two solve the problem? They still only have a limited number of resources, and everything already is organized into different dev teams, or so I believe. It's not like the entire company shifts as a whole, saying one day "Let's make a phone!" and the next "Phwewh, we created the iPhone, so everybody switch to designing the next OS X release."
Oh well. That's just my $.02 anyways ;)

I see what you mean, but if you remember Steve Jobs et al. came out that faithful day and announced to the world that MacOS X 10.5 will be delayed. It was because of the iPhone, as Steve later admitted. There were many things happening at Apple at that time and they invested a lot of time into iTunes and the new iPhone.
So I simply draw on much of what's been said since Apple has started to invest a bit too much time into iTunes and iPods.
We can all agree, that Apple has not GROWN as a company since they began the major success that started with the first iMac, then exploded with the iPod. Yet, we still hear how well they do, they enter into new arenas and even buying up companies etc.
My proposal was simple, split the company into two, concentrating they efforts 100% on ONLY the things they are dealing with, hence saving the Mac Computers in the process. IF they start to pay more attention to their product lines, quality controls and invest a heck of a lot of time into building something solid when it's released, we'd start to see profits raised in what would be Apple Computers and the iTunes and it's gadgets already do well, so they'd only be dealing with the films and music on iTunes, iPods, iPhones and AppleTV. So, when they want to prep for something new and big, it won't hit like a ton of bricks at the development of MacPros etc.
See, to this very day we don't have an Apple Screen that's HDCP certified or (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) which means you can't play Blu-Ray on even the most expensive MacPro or MacBook Pro out there. It's not a hardware limitation in the computer but a limitation in the screens they are using. This means, that instead of shouting from the top of their lungs when they announced that they'd support Blu-Ray when it was brand new... now everyone has it, even in a laptop... but not Apple...
They are lagging behind... You can use Blu-Ray burners sure... but you can't play any movies on your machine... you may just want to ask your self... why is it that a company who used to be in the forefront of technology, when Apple users would be proud of saying Firewire was first adapted by Apple... now we're having machines that's near impossible to upgrade and even if you do you're still paying the price which shouldn't be as expensive as the PC version but it is.
Two companies would be able to focus on their progress better and make sure quality is met and approved. It would also bring back and build new loyal users...
Right now... Ubuntu looks amazing... sure it's brand new and not Apple... but you know what? Visually it's amazing... and best of all... it's free.
So... Apple better shape up and star thinking about a serious split so they can show that they still give a hoot about their customers.
Too many flawed products have entered the market. Bad batteries, poor iPod construction and batteries, horrible software updates etc. I'm sad to say the list does go on.
This will get worse with the new iPhone as a new member. Apple isn't ready to deal with THAT many cell phone users.

I know what you mean, but trust me true Apple fans and users who were there during the PowerPC transition, from MacOS 6-7-8-9 and then 10 and now the Intel... It's not quite been THAT rewarding... I still remember my G4 being ROCK solid, and my iMac (lamp) being one of my favorite macs cause it was so stable. My G5 was a hunk of metal that was cursed from HELL, it was a disaster! It didn't play nice with ANY RAM and it was just a miniature jet engine that kicked in and sucked out the air in the office when I had to work. I couldn't keep sitting in my environmental suit so I had to sell it and now I have a MacMini and MacBook Pro.

one would think that with all the money they are making selling us this (touch users at least) that they would have enough to pay for servers and bandwidth..... and how could they guess how many people are going to download it wrong. they sold every ipod touch and iphone so they know how many are out there, they should have prepared better. not often does apple dissapoint me, but this is one of those times.
The problem with that is that when you are looking at the scope of the load on a network infrastructure, you don't look at the outliers, you look at general usage over long periods of time. It would be absolutely retarded for Apple to scale the servers and the network infrastructure to meet the load of a couple of days, only to have the load diminish after that time frame to a fraction of the load.

No need to be so damn patronizing...
When did you get your first mac? And when did you start working with a mac that became a serious part of your work?
It's not a toy you know? Some people actually use their Macs and iPod Touch/iPhone for their business. A certain responsibility has to be taken when you ask everyone to hold their breaths while this poo storm calms down.
And for the record, no one here is claiming that there is a company or ever was a company who delivered 100% bug free computer related products. So stop making things up.
It's called QUALITY control and that's not having products out the door 100% bug free but it's better than 70-75% which we've had in recent years.
For you who don't know Apple back when it was a company with something that can almost be described as a direct connection with their users, Apple today isn't anything like it used to be. In some ways it's good but in many ways it's horrible.
Apple ONLY survived because it took care of their loyal users and fans, we in turn kept Apple Alive and well. Some even took Apple places no one could have dreamt of. (Like the military)
So, a little respect is in order for the oldies who were with Apple since day one. I'm not one of them but I've been there through the major changes and I know and remember how it was.
All I am saying is, that there's a chance to bring back what was lost. But for newbies, you only know Apple as it is now, not how it all started. For those of us who were there during the good and bad days of Apple, you can all agree that Apple stands for something and that something doesn't echo much in their company anymore.
Remember when QuickTime was new? When CyberDog was a strange little app? Remember when At Ease was cool and the Aron plug in made the MacOS look cooler?
Yeah I'm not that old people... I've just turned 30, but I do remember these things cause they happened over time and the speed of change didn't happen as fast as today. We appreciated the products that came out. We still do, but we're kind of looking for the soul if you will that use to bring a smile to our faces when we had a new Mac. (IT still does, just in a different way)
Let me simplify it for you all...
For those of you who remember the THINK DIFFERENT commercials... well that's what Apple was....

No - that would have detracted from the iPhone 3G launch. They should have not made the iPod touch or iPhone 2.5G upgrade available until a few days after the iPhone 3G release.
That way those paying for the new toys get it first - and then the rest of us get it afterwards.

The only thing I can see for their reasoning is that they really want their App Store to be a success along with Mobile Me and the 3G. So they wanted to be fair to all their current and future customers: iPhone, iPod Touch, .Mac, App Store Developers, and future iPhone 3G users.

it's like Christmas all over again!
it sure would have been smart to release the 2.0 to previous iPhone and iPod touch users last week... I think this will probably be the last time Apple screws up like this (and it is a screw up people). the press coverage has been very negative.

I agree, they should have had a really good idea on the number of iPods and iPhones that would be connecting for this update.
I would also not be surprised (from some of what I have heard about Mr. Jobs) that someone will not be working for Apple come Monday.

i am not surprised that apple released it at after 0000 us time. It makes sense to do it after the usa is asleep, then the downloading is phased between the rest of the europe, asia, oz then the us.
Once apple had realized that the servers could not manage the iphone new, old, mobile me, the ipod touch 2.0 plus the normal day job (the worlds biggest music store) all downloading at once it makes sense to control when people can download.
Is a day really that important???? really???
