I was just wondering if the 2.0 download from Apple's XML is legal. And, if it is legal, what is the big deal with links?

And if I do download and install it, is there a catch? Will I have to pay for it? Will everything work?

I do NOT condone piracy. I'm just trying to figure out this messy situation.

And remember, so I don't get in trouble by MacRumors or Apple NO LINKS!

I believe the 2.0 firmware off of Apple's website does not work with the iPod touch.

They should have released all this stuff well in advance so that their servers are not dying from a) all the people with 1st gen iPhones using the firmware on Apple's site, b) all the people downloading iTunes 7.7, and c) all the people registering new iPhones.

My guess is that it will be a while before we see the 2.0 firmware being "officially" released

No, there is a version on their site called "iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw"

i can vouch that the XML 2.0 actually works, and when the flood to buy 2.0 dies out, i WILL buy it, it is just a tide over for a few days

To the people who have it installed:

How does it work?

Also, will you get in trouble if you download it directly?

PMB, was the file you used called "iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw"? Because I've seen some other ones on different sites.

anyone who bought 2.0 today, what number is the version that appears in about?

is it 2.0 (5A345) ?

it is the current version realeses on 3G iphones, it is "golden master" so it is not a beta, just a lover version, and one that has been hacked already

I heard the iPhone version shouldn't be used with iPod Touches... does yours work perfectly?

My iPhone was having problems yesterday (no cellular signal and battery on the fritz). I updated it yesterday with the 2.0 found in the iTunes XML file.

I don't think I got in trouble since I made a good case about the 2.0 software being available on Apple's own server, but they couldn't help me because they didn't have the 2.0 software (they couldn't restore my iPhone to verify it was a hardware problem).

Apple has no problem accepting money for the apps

I bought two apps already for my Ipod Touch. Interesting that they have no site problems when it comes to collecting money.

it is the pro bono ipod firmware, not iphone, and it rocks!

for being jailbroken since day 1, it is like a whole new world, and done apple atyls, which rocks!

Any issue with installing this .ipsw file onto 1.1.4 pwnaged iPod Touches?

just curious ...

BTW, the direct download file is named "iPod1,1_2.0..." so I suspect it works on the iPod touch.
Nope. I spent 2hr's downloading it and it bricked my iPod Touch when I installed it. I'm not sure what it is but it seems that only iPhone users have had success installing early releases of the 2.0 firmware.

In essence they do. The 2.0 firmware for the iPod Touch is $9.99 USD and Apple hasn't had much success with that thus far. I wouldn't believe that Apple is prioritizing in maintaining their revenue generating services first. All of Apple's services are equally as important to the experience that Apple want's to deliver to it's customers via the new iPhone 3G and 2.0 firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Well we're certainly getting mixed messages on this. I guess waiting for the bone fide method is the way to go, assuming Apple gives us one soon. iTunes is now back to saying that 1.1.4 is the current version, so it doesn't look good.
