Because, by the way things are going, it probably won't be functional until tomorrow anyway. At least then we would have been able to get the dang thing on the scheduled release date...

Is this Apple's typical M.O.?

Apple is very quick to fix probleams. It will be working today.

I assume servers will be up by 6PM PDT, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were up at 3PM PDT. 6PM gives them 8 hours to fix the problems and for people to get settled.

From past experiences, generally how long does it take for the servers to come back up? I hear last years iPhone launch brought the servers down, would you remember how long they were down for?

However long they were down, multiply that by at least three. I think Apple overstretched themselves this time. MobileMe plus iPhone plus Firmware 2.0 = Major strain on Apple's infrastructure. And this time the rollout is international, which compounds their problems.

People were having problems with the activation servers for about a week.

Thanks, Apple. I won't be home all weekend.

Why the hell would they try to launch all of this all at once? iPhone 3G, MobileMe, 2.0 updates, iTunes 7.7, etc...

I wouldn't be so sure about that. (2.0 + mobile me) * (6 million previous owners + all the new owners WORLD WIDE) = servers locked up until?????

It would have been better if there was a staggered roll out. Current countries, followed by new countries every day or two afterwards. That way there wouldn't be such a hair clog in the intertubes.
