Blank area "framing" iPhone display

I'm running 2.0 on my iPhone and noticed for the first time today that there is a very thin blank line that in effect frames the display of my iPhone. Just to be clear the point I am trying to make is that 99% of the screen has a black background with all the various app icons, yet there is a thin almost frame-like area around the black area of the display that does not light up. Is this how it's always been or is there something wrong?

That's how they all are. Day One 4GB right here is like that.
