Is it normal that my old 3G AT&T SIM card works with my new iphone??

I popped in my old 3G sim card from AT&T after i connected my iphone and it went through the activation process but didn't activate the iphone and the other phone was still working? So then i tried the other phones sim card in the iphone and it works perfectly?? So should i just keep this one in or what??

from what i heard after you sign contract in store and leave your supposed to use your old sim in the new phone...but i could be wrong!

yeah but there like oh we dont need ur sim this has one in it already and that didn't work but mine right now does. So how do i know if my number is now on the actual iPhone plan of unlimited data and stuff?!
