I use MakeiPhoneRingtone (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/).
Just use whatever wave editor you're comfortable with to trim and tweak the audio, then drop it onto MakeiPhoneRingtone and it shows up in iTunes.

I made the mistake of buying iToner as soon as it was released . . . never got my money's worth. It stopped working then Ambrosia stopped the support. That was a total waste of money but I'm wiser now
I'm now, happily using Garageband for all of my ring tones.

+1
And for more reasons than just the iPhone. Integrates well with iTunes and other OSX products. (if that's your thing)

I love garageband. By FAR the easiest and does everything for you. You can make any type of tone you want. From selected media to a drum and random instruments. Fun at the same time!

Garage band works very easily and right out of the box.
No hacking of the phone required. It works for both v1 and 3G iPhones.
I am not sure why anyone would use anything else at this point. Unless for some crazy arsed reason you need a ringtone longer than 40 seconds.

iphoneringtonemaker works with 3g. I personally use audacity to cut and edit my custom ringtones, then i just use iphoneringtonemaker to transfer them to my 3g. very easy!

does garageband make ringtones for free? and how exactly do you do it? (sorry if it's self explanatory, just start me off)
EDIT: Disregard my post, I did a quick search and noticed that it is both free and I found some step by step intructions. Thanks though!
