I just did some quick math and there are 630 apps you need to pay for and 168 free apps. Do you think apple is trying to limit the free apps or are people just reluctant to work for free?

Yea, but you should also include the .99 ones as well in your calculation... Some of the free apps are completely useless (the one you just hold a button for as long as you can for instance). Developers want some money for their time spent developing the applications. .99 or 2.99 is the least we can do to keep the applications coming.

I would say so far the appstore is quite a success.

No, people were just unsure of prices. Just look at the number of $0.99 applications that have a FREE counterpart.

If they knew that, they would have kept it free.

Some developers may be selling 0.99 apps just long enough to pay back their $99 developer fee (and other development costs).

Quite frankly, I'm surprised that any of them are free. People don't normally work for free. They have bills to pay, families to feed, etc.

If they ask for a few dollars, then just pay it. If you can afford the iPhone, a few dollars is really not a big deal.

Remember the developers have to pay Apple quite a lot every year and a registration fee, too, and some may want to make a living off making apps, so its only fair they charge for some.
