View Full Version : Old applications you would like to see OS X native
King Cobra

I think this may be my most intelligent topic since the Apple Monitors discussion.
Plain and simple: What applications/games/utilities, old or new, would you like to see available for OS X, even if these applications seem as if they will not become OS X native?
My choices are:
Strata 3D Base
Pacific Tech Graphing Calculator
Issac Asimov's Astronomy Collection
Virtual Pool for the Mac
Whales (A guide on system 7)
MacBrickout
PowerPoker for System 7

The one I can think of right away is Poser... I have version 3, but I am waiting until an OSX native version comes out before I purchase an update.
Of course, I would like to see all my games out for OS X, such as UT, and others that I won't list at the moment (they are at home, and I'm at work).

I say MicroLeague Baseball. We'll need it when the players go on strike.
I may have to dust off my SE/30 just for this.
Oh, and I can play Shufflepuck Cafe in between innings. (Actually, I can't. It's System 6 and I don't remember it having MultiFinder)

Adobe Dimensions
This little app is so sweet, especially for Flash. The output to vector is really nice. Does anyone know of a substitute for it?

Oh wow, I just remebered Shufflepuck! What a great game!
I also was a big fan of Wolfenstein 3D. It would be really cool if someone made something like DoomLegacy but for Wolfenstein instead :D

It was cool and they never kept up for the Mac. The most recent editions are eye-popping. It's got some serious advantages over basic 1st person shooters. That's where I mastered the "Tablet kill at 1Km". Oops, did I just Railgun your cockpit? (grin):D

simcity 1.4... hell it's not even available for 256 colors, i wish i could play it again. i don't want to have to set up a 680x0 system just for this...
maybe some shareware patch guy will make such a creature... but i'm not holding my breath...

Star Trek Trivia
I know it's old and was originally for the Mac 512k, but I managed to memorize the answers.
By the way, system 6 does have multi-finder. Go to the Special menu, choose set startup. I warn you though, it runs VERY slow in MF.

Crystal Quest, MacInooga Railway, Shufflepuck, and Enchanted Scepters.
Although that Mac Plus emulator for OS X allows me to play those anyway, so I can't complain. :D

Microsoft Project or at least an open source compatible with MS project files.
Adobe Dimensions...I find it seriously disturbing that this project is still sold...there hasn't been an update in forever. It was a great little tool that I still use in my vector work for simple 3d everyday...it would really compliment Illustrator 10. Maybe it could be turned into an included plug-in. I thought Adobe was sniffing around Carrara for this purpose...I still need a solid easy to use tool to create quick 3D for print...
Is Fontographer due for an update as well?

Don't count on that ever coming to OS X... Considering how the last version is over 4 years old (dated in 98 I believe), it doesn't reliably install under the latest versions of OS 9. The windblows version however, was done in 2000, with probably another update soon. Damn you bill gates!!

Oh the memories... :)

Well, it looks as MS now neglects its Works program-it's been at v 6 for 2 years- I hope they update it soon. Or Apple should release v 7 of theirs too.

Is Dark Castle around for X? I think I saw a demo of a re-make of it somewhere a while ago. But I think it was OS 9, and it was nowhere near as good as the original. You just can't beat B&W!

MacroMedia SoundEdit gets my vote. I would pay big bucks for that.
Others that I would like:
Risk
NetTrek
Talking Moose...actually this could be a really usefull app now. Imagine the moose telling you when you have new mail, when a site has been updated, when encoding or disk burning is finished, when your IM friends are online, perhaps stock alerts, weather, sports, other apps could script to it...so it could tell you that it's been X days since you ran Drive 10. Perhaps phrases could be shared over the Net...think Knowledge Navigator, only a moose.
But really SoundEdit is needed...oh, and of course RealPlayer

Director plain and simple..... this is the one package that stops me working natively in OSX....... and I'm not happy about how long it's taking Macromedia to sort it out......

I would love to see OS X versions of two old favourites from the mid 1980's - Chuckie Egg and the 'Repton' series. I played both on a BBC for most of my childhood!
Its amazing to think that those machines had only 16K of RAM (up to 128K in the Master) and no hard disk and yet the games were BRILLIANT.
I've still got Repton 3 and many other games on 5 1/4" floppies for the BBC and I would love to play them again.
I've got a PC version of Chuckie Egg which I can play using Virtual PC (Classic only for me until I upgrade).
Dobbin.
