Game Window Make Small

Like with the DVD player how you can have the option to watch the DVD full screen or not.

When I play a computer game it takes up all the window and i have to press Command Tab to change out of it.

Is there a way so you can play a game in a smaller open window with other applications like Messenger open as well?
 
It depends on the game. Check the in-game options to see if you have it set to run in full-screen mode. Most modern games give the user the choice between playing in a window and playing in full-screen.
