iPod touch Trying to upgrade to 2.0

I'm getting a message stating that all content that I have uploaded onto my iTouch will be deleted once 2.0 is downloaded and that I should apply 2.0 to my computer.

1. Does this mean I need to backup my iTouch to my laptop prior to downloading 2.0?
