iPod touch 1.1.4 JB to 2.0 ok?

I have a jailbroken 1.1.4 but now I want to upgrade to 2.0 and I am willing to pay. Can I just a straight upgrade or do need to somehow do a backup first? If i need to, would a iTumes backup save all my settings and data? I have a lot of contact info now stored so I would hate to lose it. Thanks people 🙂
