View Full Version : Griffin Elan Form Case

Having tried unsuccessfully with an invisible shield for my 3G iPhone (it looked awful!), I decided to take the plunge and get a case. I've never put a case on any of my Apple devices, as I've always found them to be ugly and added too much bulk. However, I was getting obsessive about fingerprints on the back of my shiny new black iPhone, so decided to look into cases. In the end, I settled on the Griffin Elan Form case and I have to say I am very, very impressed with it. It fits snugly without adding much bulk to the phone, feels good in the hand and has great access to all the ports. It also has a polycarbonate front so you get some protection for the screen. You can even slide the bottom off to put the phone into a dock if you decide to get one. The only downside for some will be that it is leather over polycarbonate, so won't be suitable for vegetarians / vegans but beyond that I'd recommend it highly

I've included a few pictures of the case:

I have to agree with you 100%. I had this case waiting for the iPhone before I even got the phone. As soon as I got home the other day, in went the 3G. The case screams class. I totally dig the leather (who knows, it could be "pleather") and it compliments the leather earpiece of my Jawbone 2. I highly recommend this case. :)

Those in the UK, the Carphone Warehouse are stocking them

Wirelessly posted (iPhone 16GB: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5A347 Safari/525.20)

picked it up at the local Carphone warehouse: at £19.98 it's not the cheapest case but definitely worth the money

OK - so this is a HARD case with leather on top. Is it super snug? Cuz the problem with some of these is they often allow crap under that wears away at the phone.

I'm wondering how much bulk it adds vs. say the old Incase 'protective case' (rubber) type. Or the Incase Slider.

Further, if you put it in your pocket, does it slide in/out nicely or get 'stuck' like the rubber types?

That's pretty snazzy looking. However, I can't wait for either the Agent 18 EcoShield or the Incase Slider. I have the white phone, so I want a glossy white hard case so that it will protect without changing the look. I had the white Incase slider for my 1st gen phone and it was really sexy, made it look a lot like the 3G white, minus the shape of course...

I'd be interested to know if it scratches the chrome bezel and the plastic back if you slide it on and off. I love the look of this case and almost picked it up, but didn't want to risk scratching up my iPhone.

I also don't like added bulk to my phone. I had an Agent 18 EcoShield and hated it because it added too much to the phone.

What actually covers the screen? Is it one of those plastic film type things like Invisible Shield, Bodyguardz etc or is it actually part of the case?

Could I see pics of the inside of the case? Is it just hard plastic? Im thinking about getting it but dont wont some thing that will destroy my iphone with scratches.

It's bothering me that the sides are so squared. How does it feel in the hand with that?

I wonder if the edges of the leather skin will stick to lint, etc.

It 'seems' the camera area has a plastic ring around it to where the plastic on the case butts up to the camera? Or - does it show the iPhone's black or white body around the camera at all?

Phil A.
Jul 13, 2008, 05:32 PM
OK, to answer a few of the questions:
The inside is smooth, polished plastic: I've slid it on and off a few times (mainly to get rid of fingerprints from when I installed it!) and there's no apparent damage to the phone: No scratches at all on the chrome or the back plastic

The screen is covered by an acrylic piece that sits on top of the phone and then goes into the case with the phone. It seems very high quality and doesn't detract from the feel of the screen at all

It fits very, very snugly and whilst it's too early to tell if it will allow any foreign material into it, I don't think it will: All the port openings sit very flush with the body of the phone.

It doesn't really add any bulk and keeps the curved back of the phone so feels incredibly comfortable and not at all like an aftermarket case (the sides aren't as squared off as they appear in the photos: they're actually very slightly curved). The camera area does have a plastic ring round it and only the chrome bezel round the lens is visible, not any of the phone's back (it is very accurately machined too: No gaps or covering of the bezel)

Finally, the case is covered with leather which gives it decent grip without being at all "sticky" like some silicon cases can be: slides in and out of my pocket perfectly and doesn't bring any "pocket lint" out with it :)

I think that's covered most of the questions :)

Phil - Very nice. Thanks so much for giving more details. One more perhaps dumb question.... Do you think a 3g with an Invisible shield on the BACK would squeeze into one of these babies?

It may well do, but it is a very snug fit. May fit better if you cut the corners off the IS before putting it on

can you plug all headphones into the headphone port? or will it only fit the originals? I had this, but noticed that it looked too snug so I sold mine while in line. Im using a sena slip case now.

Got my case from CPW today - mainly based on this thread. One point of note though and I don't know if Phil (OP) can shed some light. There is permanently air trapped between the polycarbonate and the iPhone display - which is pretty unsightly.

Now the OP pictures in this thread don't show this - unless it is not picked up be the camera? Anyone got and hints and tips?

Presumably you don't have to use the polycarbonite? Couldn't you just put a normal screen protector on instead?

I got this case back ordered from Griffin. I hope it comes in soon, my iPhone feels so naked. AT&T's selection of cases were pathetic. They kept trying to sell me those tacky silicone cases. I had the Incase slider for the first iPhone. I guess they couldn't be bothered to get one out on time for the 3G, so I'm gonna try the Griffin one.

The case is brilliant, no scratches on the phone at all!

However, the plastic screen cover they provide does scratch, so I'm going to stick a BestSkinsEver over the screen, and stop using the polycarbonate protector. Hopefully that will work :D

I had exactly the same problem at first, but managed to fix it: The pictures don't show any bubbles because there aren't any :)
Basically, they're not air bubbles, they occur if you have any grease at all on the screen or protector (such as fingerprints, etc). What I did was clean the screen and protector with iClear and the cleaning cloth that comes with the phone. You have to be very, very thorough to make sure it is absolutely spotless and dry, then when you put the screen on you should find you have no more bubbles.
Good luck :)

I'm so pleased with elan case. It offers great protection including the corners but the whole of the screen is totally visible. Looks great, quite thin and doesn't ruin the iphone. The only downside is the join between the two parts of the case feels a little obvious. I've not intention of using a dock so access to the bottom half of the case wasn't really an issue. Definitely worth a purchase though for the price.

I ordered it from the Apple Store and got it three days ago and have been using it since. It replaced an Agent18 (black) that I really didn't like. It's called the Griffin Nu Form and I LOVE it! Thin, dockable and stylish.

I have a few questions, whats the inside made of ?

Is there any performance difference between yours and the leather one, like is the inside all the same

Does it cover the chrome bezel

And some one wrote that the leather one scratched the back right wehen they put it on, and took the bottom off, can you tell me about your experience, and if you think his experience was a fluke

Any opinions on the Elan Form vs. the Contour Flick vs. the Agent 18 vs. Incase Slider (assuming a 3G version is forthcoming)?? I'm leaning toward the Elan because of the leather but wondered what people think.

I'm also planning a shield on the back only (not sure which yet) so it needs to fit happily over the shield. I'm really hoping it will only result in a slightly tighter fit. Thoughts?

Cheers,

I used a Seidio innocase and holster for my gen 1 iphone and loved it. I received this Griffin Elan case yesterday, I am very impressed. The leather is not exactly supple and around the seam is kinda sharp ( I am sure 2-3 days worth of use will wear that smooth). The plastic screen cover is useless to me because of the "oil slick" look caused from air being trapped in between. It is a very slim case that does not add much bulk at all and will help give you some grip to the phone. So until I see Seidio's entry into the 3g iphone market, this is the case for me.

are you sure it's exactly the same thing? I'm skeptical becuase the one on griffin's site says "Includes static peel screen protector and premium cleaning cloth" .. and the one at apple says "Rigid screen protector guards touchscreen while allowing full control"..

..that may be the reason for the difference in price..

I have a question about the screen protector cleaning - did you spray the sticky side or the side you would end up touching (using the iPhone) with iClear? I have one of those kits as well and a backordered Elan on the way.

Picked one up today in CPW (£19 btw)... like it but one thing I would say, it's so tight on the phone there's no chance of fitting it over the top of a 'shield' product (on the back anyway). In fact I'm a bit worried that it might scratch the iPhone after repeated removal of the bottom (dock) section. Thoughts?

my thoughts are that you are unlikely to take the case off ever.

My wife has an incase slider and since the first day we put it on, she has never taken the case off. she has an invisible shield on the front on her phone and it is pretty well protected on all sides and still looks great.

i think i'd prefer a slider, but since they won't be out until august i'm going to get this in the mean time. At $24 shipped i can probably come close to breaking even when i sell it in a couple of months when i get the slider. right now i have a crystal film on the front of mine... so far 6 days and no scratches... *fingers crossed*

I bought this case the other day at Best Buy...and I'm still not sure that I like the way it looks. Even though it's really not that bulky of a case, somehow it just makes the phone look bulky. I can't really explain it. I do like it for the fact that it's a slider case...but I may look for something else that doesn't have the leather on the back. Oh how I wish the Agent 18 cases were sliders...:)

I bought the Elan case yesterday from CPW. When I first installed it I hated it because the plastic that goes on the screen was 'sticking' to the screen which was making it really unclear.

Anyway, today I've spent 10 minutes cleaning the phone screen and plastic with a window cleaner. It is important to ensure NO fingerprints are anywhere on the screen or plastic as the grease from your fingerprints will mess up the screen. Now that I've done that I've got NO problems with the screen and it looks great. :D

Well I already posted in here once but was a little grouchy with the fact that I had to remove my best skin ever from the back of my phone in order to fit this case.

After a full day of use with this case I just want to say I LOVE IT. It really is the slickest case I have ever owned for a phone. I love the feel, how snug it is on the phone and that it doesn't pull every piece of lint from my pocket up with it like my silicon case did. It also slides in my pocket with ease.

Overall a fantastic product.

Toss it out and get a good screen protector that adheres to the screen. The idea of a hovering screen protector is not a good idea.

It keeps sticking and I get spots. I followed everyone's recommendations in the forum (cleaning it throughly, etc.), but I can't seem to get the spots out. What should I do?

Bought one yesterday as well and really like it. After reading this thread, I realize there must have been a screen protector in the box? I threw it away at the Apple Store. But, why have it. I've noticed less smudges on the front side now that the case is on. I guess the smudge magnet of the backside would build up the smudge and transfer it to the front. Anyways, I don't miss the fact I tossed the protector, b/c it doesn't really protect anything. The case does!

I am somewhat interested in this case, but still not convinced. While I am leaning to probably getting a leather slip pouch, I do think this is a nice case. My biggest worries though is scratching the besel or the back of the phone. Maybe I am unlike other people, but I remove my case here few weeks if not more often than that to clean it and the phone. Some have claimed that this provides a very flush fit that doesn't need removing, but dirt and dust still work themselves in there.

I haven't notice it scratch the case but it does leave kinda rub marks on the back.. mostly probably because I've taken it apart so many times trying to fix the screen.. so I'd probably personally recommend against the case if you plan on taking it apart to often..

No marks or scratches on mine, although it does attract lint/dust on the back of the phone.

I've taken mine out a few times and there isn't a single mark on it. Maybe your case was a bit too snug, I'm sure there are production differences, some may be a little snugger than others?

Did anyone purchase the Elan Form case in a Brick 'N Mortar store? E.g. Apple, AT&T, Best Buy, etc. I'd really like to get this case and would rather pick it up local instead of waiting for it to ship.

Also, who's using the Elan case without the plastic front? If you leave the plastic front out is the case any looser than with it? I'd like to use the Elan case with a Bodyguardz film but don't want the Elan case to shift around and scratch up the body.

i ordered this case on thursday of last week and it is backordered.

I ended up going to best buy yesterday to buy one and they had about 40 in stock. I figure I'll just return the one i get from griffin to best buy when it comes in.

The case is pretty nice. I have a crystal film on my phone and it had no problem working with the case. The leather is a pretty cheapy looking pleather type material. The fit is good but not as good as the incase slider. I'll use this one until i can get a slider in a black matte color.

I didn't even notice the film that the product comes with until this morning when i remembered that it came with one.

The crystal film does leave a slight gap on the side where there is no protection.

My wife's invisible shield and slider combo leaves no gaps in protection on her phone.

My invisible shield still hasn't come even though i ordered about 2 weeks before release. There were about 50 at best buy sitting there. Lame.

all in all i'd give this case a 7 out of 10 vs. a 9 of 10 for the slider. It is pretty good and seems to be one of the better cases out there right now.

Just put my Elan Form case on about 20 mins ago. Just grabbed it from my local Apple store. Pretty darn nice I must say. I initially had air under the screen cover but flipped it over and now it's perfect.

I actually ordered a Naked Case, but it will take 4-6 weeks to ship and I'm just to clumsy to wait that long. I feel a lot better having it fully covered now.

The Elan Form doesn't add significant bulk especially compared to some other cases and the leather look on the back "suits me" (even though it's fake). I don't think I will take the case off even once...that is until my Naked Case arrives. :D

How well do these to pieces fit together? Is it tight enough that they don't pull apart when pulling it from a jeans pocket? Does it feel like it could loosen up over time?
Have the worry that I'd pull the phone out of my pocket and the cover would come apart. Causing you to drop a piece of the case or the phone.

Very snug fit...don't see it coming part very easily. In fact when I wanted to flip my screen it took a pretty good tug to fully separate.

yeah i tried something similar.. I know I got EVERYTHING of the screen.. and it still sticks a bit.. more the more I use it. I emailed Griffin support and they admitted that the screen protector wasn't the greatest and they are sending me a magnetic stick one. I really wanted the harder plastic for protection but it just doesn't seem to want to work out.

support has been great btw.. very good customer service. They just sent me another email saying they will send me the hard cover, and a static cover.. to see if I might be able to get the hard one to work. they said that it's hit and miss with how well the screen covers work.. which I think this thread is proof of.

Bought the Griiffin case yesterday before watching The Dark Knight. Put the case on before the movie. After the movie I noticed the leather that they use is starting to peel back.

Today I emailed Griffin. I will let you guys know how it goes. It seems on the volume and vibrate side the leather is a tad too long.

Other than that the case is perfect. It's not bulky and it's very classy. It does not rob the form and is just the right feel. Not too sticky but not too slippery.

I'm absolutely livid... I've just taken my case off for only the second time since I put it on the phone, and there's a scratch on the back of my phone that's at least half a mm deep and about a cm long  There's a corresponding scratch on the inside of the case as well, with a pointy bit of plastic sticking up... That appears to be what's caused the damage. It's scratched right through the lacquer on the back of the phone :(

Anyone any ideas about who I should complain to? Frustratingly I bought it to tide me over until my Zagg shield arrives! :(

Ferris23
Jul 22, 2008, 08:25 AM
I gave my case a good feel around the inside for stuff like that before I put the phone in. You have to remember these things are mass produced so it's always best to examine itbefore assuming your case is smooth and flawless. Sorry to hear that happened, that would drive me to find a way to return the phone for another one.

I would first complain to the Apple Store since they are most likely the ones who could actually remedy the phone damage.

I'm just as careful as anyone can be really... I make sure whenever i put it in that there's no stuff that could cause a scratch... It wasn't there on Saturday when I was showing the missus, and it's now got a massive scratch in it... :(

Odd, I've taken mine out like 5 times to show friends and whatnot, and there isn't a mark on mine. Something must have been in there when you slid it in (that's what she said)

Anyway, the case is one of the best, I think we can all agree (except for the scratch guy, which is understandable), or at least those who own it can agree.

But we can also agree that the supplied screen cover is a worthless piece of ****. I tried to get that thing on without those grease bubble marks and it impossible.

Agreed on both counts. Shame they didn't supply a more 'adhesive' screen protector as I might have used it. I hate the look/feel of the 'floating' protector.

I had the case for a few days then returned it.

The case looks good, but still too bulky for me. I went with Bodyguardz instead.

I didn't like how the volume and vibrate switch was recessed. I also didn't like feeling the back where the two pieces snap together.

The plastic screen was worthless and I was using the power support anti-glare screen.

Mine was delivered on Monday, and I'm loving it so far! It is definitely a tight fit, but I don't plan on taking the phone out of the case very often, so it's nice to have the ability to simply slide off the bottom piece and then dock the phone. I have removed the case twice so far and it has not left any scratches or scuffs. The case seems very light; I find it hard to believe that some people consider it "bulky." I'm not using the screen protector that was included. Instead, I applied Power Support Crystal Film. Overall, I am very satisfied with the case -- it meets my needs just perfectly.

I've got mine delivered yesterday. I like the look much better than contour case I got from Apple store when I purchased the phone.:o
I noticed tiny scratches contour's clear hard shell made on the chrome edges.

When I first put it on the phone it felt very tight. I had to give quite a push to let the silence button and volume control buttons to pass the side walls and find the opening for them.
Now, I have a question for everyone who use the dock. Is EasyDock feature working for you?
I find it very hard to take the bottom off with bare hands. I need to stick in some object at the crack opening and wiggle off a bit to start the bottom take off. Is it just tight at the beginning or there could be some defects with wrong measures?

One more 'could've been nicer' is that it completely hides phone's chrome rim edges and the backside, so you can't show off the shiny parts (including apple logo). They could've made some part transparent or semi-transparent.

As for the screen protector this is what you do so you don't see bubbles etc....

Clean your phone screen really good and the screen protector... once both are clean take your screen protector and add a little bit of baby powder to it and gently rub it around on it... making sure you don't see the powder once you are done....

This will stop the screen protector from sticking. If you don't have any baby powder.... if you have any pills laying around that are capsules pull the capsule apart and use its powder..... and do the same thing... and for anyone that thinks a pills powder will hurt your phone.... it won't....

Bought one of these from CPW today, very very nice case so far. Fits like a glove, adding little to no bulk imo.

My only slight concern is that the "leather" on one side appears ever so slightly raised from the plastic rim. With continued usage I'm concerned it'll come away and peel off. I';ll use it for a week or so to see if it happens, then replace it if starts to peel. Definitely a keeper so far, but so often with cases you only really form an opinion after a few days usage.

Oh, I'm not using the screen protector. I had a Touch since launch, used it every day, and the screen is still in mint condition.

I got this case from the Apple store to tide me over until my Vaja case arrives(those dang things take 45 days to ship.) and I like it. I mean the leather feels a little cheap, but for the most part the form and fit is really good. The screen protector I initially liked, thought it worked well, but it really started to annoy me. I tried for a while in vain to clean that thing and put it on the phone, but I invariably got specks of dust under it and it would drive me mad, so I gave that up.

Now I just have to hang in there until my Vaja ships on September 7th.

I got this case about a week ago and I love it. Fits very nicely. As some others have said, I too was not overly thrilled with the screen protector. I just couldn't stand all the fingerprints. So I went and got the DLO Anti-glare Surface Shield. Granted it still shows minor fingerprints from time to time, but it's very easy to wipe off. It works like a charm and fits just fine with the Elan case.

ok today is the last day I can return the case (damn apple and their 2 week return policy).. and I still haven't gotten my new screen protector from Griffin. I emailed them yesterday to see when I should expect it and no response. I just tore my case apart again and cleaned everything.. spotless.. and tried flipping the protector over as some have suggested.. and now it's even worse. So regardless of how clean I get this, or what side I use, it sticks horribly.. now even worse than before. I think I'm going to return the case today. I paid more for this case cause I liked the screen protector (in theory anyway). If I have to go out and buy a crystal protector or something for like 15 bucks) than I don't think I should be paying 35 bucks for this case. It's definitely not worth the 50 I'd be spending.

actually I think I found my problem. I'd been using a liquid screen cleaner on the phone and the protector trying to get it spotless. I had a theory since this latest cleaning made it worse so I recleaned it with a water damp cloth and reapplied and now there is only one tiny speck sticking so it's almost perfect :)

-My thoughts on this case- (black leather)

The only reason i got this case was because it looked the best in my eyes out of the selection from best buy. I just got my phone yesterday and didnt want to use it without protection. (i have other cases in mind, so this is just used as a temp.)

What i was looking for was a simple case that will protect my phone if i was to drop it and came with something to protect my screen.

RATE: 7 out of 10

pros:

clean looking - fits like a glove - protects - comes with a screen protector

cons:

no clip - feels bulky - leather will peel

Conclusion: Its a decent case. For my purpose at this time this case works, but there are better cases to fit my overall needs but BestBuy didnt have them.

For those who complain about the screen protector, use it or dont. Bubbles will accure now and then with this case as you take the screen on and off repeatedly as it is not a stick on screen that you apply with water or solution. Purpose is to have something over the acutall screen so you wont scratch it.

This case shouldnt scratch the iphones surface if you treat it with care and make sure the inside is clean w/ no bumps. Yes it is pretty tight when you first put it on but do what i did and twist and turn the case a bit before putting it on and you will loosen it up.

Thats my 2 cents!

Just an FYI for you guys, this case will scratch the chrome bezel, it is inevitable. I just took mine out to clean and I have a scratch write in between the overlay plus screen protector and the chrome bezel...and then the ridge of the chrome in scratched from top to bottom on the right side of the case...I am so paranoid about scratching this thing it is driving me nuts...I am on my 3rd iPhone so I don't think they will swap anymore out for me without problems...The protector they ship actually ship with the elan form might actually give some protection more than the overlayplus/powersupport film protectors...

-My thoughts on this case- (black leather)
cons:

no clip - feels bulky - leather will peel

Fair enough about it having no clip (not an issue for me as I'd never use one), plus the leather will inevitably peel...but bulky?! I struggle to see how ANY case, beyond an invisible shield, could be less bulky!

I don't see why the leather will peel. I have had mine for a couple weeks and it shows no sign of degrading contact with the plastic. I don't think it will peel on mine unless I abuse it.

Anyone order this case directly from the website? It looked like people got tracking numbers?

I ordered last Saturday with standard UPS shipping, got an email telling me my order was placed and would ship within 48 hours. I haven't received the case, or a tracking number. I know it's only Friday, but anything I've ordered with standard shipping usually comes within 4 business days.

My concern isn't so much that I don't have it, but that I don't have a tracking number (other posts reference this).

Ok, he is entitled to an opinion. I agree, it doesn't add bulk and unless you have a defective case the leather won't peel, but why troll a phone case?

I used this case from day 1 (purchased at my local Best Buy). Except I use it with no screen protector. It is the best case I could think of. Sturdy, looks great and if it does not fit in a certain accessory, just remove the lower part easily and plug it in!!!!! Highly recommended

1. feels bulky - some say any case will make the iphone feel bulky to those who prefer it naked. So in that sense it feels a little bit bulky so im sorry to have left "little bit" out.

2. leather will peel - if you look closely at the case where the leather meets the plastic it tucks in a bit ie. sides/corners. Depending on how you treat it, it may peel in that area in the future. I didnt mean that the leather would just start peeling like it was some cheap pleather.

Looks a little bulky, can't have much of a grip on surfaces and in your hand (it's smooth leather, come on!).... and it looks like damn alligator skin. I guess if I was 70 years old it would be cool, but i'm not so.. yeah.

INCASE for the win!

I just got this case this week and it is my third case. The first two being the Incase Silicone protector and the second being the contour flick.

Out of all the cases I've had, this one is my favorite.

Fitment: Top notch. It covers the chrome perfectly and does not leave any of it showing. Buttons are sunk in enough so that they don't get damaged from tossing the phone around but are also easily accessible.

Feel: One of the issues I had with the incase silicone protector was that it not only attracted alot of dust, but it was extremely difficult to take in and out of my pocket. The Griffin Elan Form case definitely slides in and out of the pocket much easier. The leather feels great in the hand and definitely adds to the quality feel that the iPhone has to begin with.

Bulk: Of course any case you put on your iPhone (other than the invisible shield type protectors) will add bulk, but bulk isn't such a bad thing in my opinion. The naked iPhone feels small and has the tendency to slip out of my hand alot. With the Griffin Form case, there is enough bulk so that the phone no longer has a tendency to fall out of my hand but there isn't so much bulk that it is annoying to carry in my jean pocket.

Look: This case looks drop dead sexy. I love it!

Conclusion: I wanted to wait for the incase slider for the 3g but I don't like using my phone without a case and couldn't wait that long. I got this case to hold me over and it delivers. Looks like I don't need to wait anymore cause I actually like this case better than my roommates incase slider for his first gen iphone.

One thing i'd like to note that the leather has started to show signs of peeling but that is not a big deal to me. A case is just that, a case. When the time comes that I need to replace it, I can replace it without hurting the wallet too much. Of course, by that time I'll probably want to trade my iPhone in for the 4G version :D.

Great review, I totally agree. Though like I said my leather is still in perfect shape after 2 weeks.

I'd actually like to see what it looks like without the leather. If mine ever does peel I'll just clean off the adhesive and use it as an all plastic case. Might look cool in all black that way. But I still have yet to see a case that is as classy and not bulkifying as this one.

Anyone brave enough to pull their leather to see how it looks for me?

I have noticed that the chrome bezel at the bottom of my phone has formed some very tiny scratches from using this cover.

Not exactly ideal, when you buy a case to supposedly protect the phone from this type of thing happening!

Have had the case from DAY 1. Using it with no screen, I tossed the screen. I am not a kind of person who buys screens for all these phones and cameras, it is a $199 phone who cares if it gets scratched? You're gonna replace it with the next iphone version in 12 months anyway. Protective screens are too much hassle i.m.ho.o. My screen on my 3G is fine and I've had the phone from day 1, without any screens. And I keep it in the piocket,

After reading this thread, I went to a local Carphone Warehouse and picked up a Elan Form in black today.

I was a big fan of the Incase Slider Case for the original iPhone, although it was massively overpriced and very slippery.

The Elan Form definitely has better grip, and looks more classy. None of that plasticky feel to it.

The biggest problem I had with it was in the beginning, it was very tight to slot the top piece onto the phone. I was afraid that something might get scratched. I didn't use the film that came with the case, but rather kept the Power Support Anti Glare film that was on.

As you can guess, taking the case off (for the first time anyways) is a bit of a nightmare, but it gets easier as time goes on.

And my phone did get scratched, near the area where the upper piece and the lower piece connect. I think it is unavoidable, as part of the lower piece (which you take off if you want to dock your phone) slides under the top piece, ie in the middle between the top piece and your phone.

A bit annoyed at that but it's not something I would notice during regular use. From what I heard from other people the iPhone 3G is prone to scratching anyways. Just a bit OCD in keeping my phone spanking clean and I'm sure some of you are like that too!

The other good thing about the Elan Form is because of the tight fitting, less dust tends to get trapped within the edges. All you need to clean is the exposed panels.

Overall, out of 10, I would give it an 8.5. Still better than the cases I have used (Wave, Agent18 Clear Shield and Capsule Rebel).

I think at some point all cases can and well result in some minor scratching. It's the nature of the beast and the gamble we take. It's not even so much the case, just what gets inside the case.

So, either go without a case and risk a drop that will damage it far worse than some minor scratches, or use a case and deal with some hairline scratches while preventing major damage.

I choose the second option as cement and pavement will damage a phone far worse than a case.

I dropped my Ipod Touch last winter and thankfully was able to exchange it, that little gem never left a case after that day. It got dented all to hell and a case would have prevented it, and I would have much rather had some tiny scratches than what happened.

So, I would really like to be able to apply my Best Skin Ever to the back and have it fit in this case.

Does anyone here think a light sanding to the case will allow this to happen?

When I tried with the skin on it pulled it off and there was no way in hell it was going to fit.

I was thinking of filing down the inside a bit to allow a thicker Iphone to fit due to the skin. The question is where to start sanding. Obviously I would use a fine grit paper.

This solution would be the best of both worlds. I could yank the phone out as I please without worrying about it scratching due to debris, and I still would have the option of protection with a case.

Thoughts?

I bought one of these from Best Buy today, and if I wasn't on my lunch break, I would have turned around and returned it. The so-called leather was already peeling on the back, on the bottom half of the case, where it meets the top half. I'm sure it's just an issue with the particular case I got, but I'm waiting for the InCase Slider, which was the best case for the 1st iPhone (IMO for what I'm looking for).

I originally ordered this case online and got an email saying it was shipping in 48 hours. I chose free UPS shipping, but after not receiving it for over a week, I sent them an email asking the status. Someone responded back saying that it's a popular case and it's on backorder. Thanks for telling me that when I ordered it, or shortly thereafter.

Griffin won't be seeing anymore of my business in the future.

So far I'm sticking with the hard screen cover they sent me.. it's not perfect.. screen doesn't react 100% like I'd like.. more like 90%.. but I think its worth it for the extra protection.

August 6, 2008 - Screen protectors (2) actually get shipped.

August 15, 2008 - Screen protectors actually arrive.

Better late than never I guess.

Edit: Static cling protector is VERY nice. Easiest one I've ever put on and it looks fantastic. Very slim, you can hardly tell it's on. Not exactly sure why they aren't shipping with these... If you got one of these cases email immediately for one of these protectors. You won't regret it.

It looks rather nice without the leather - unfortunately, I didn't mean to find out!

When I tried removing the bottom part of the case, all that moved was a good proportion of the leather. I managed to smooth it back down and you would have to look hard to notice anything - but after looking at the rest of the case, the adhesive along the sides appears weak.

http://www.theiphoneblog.com/images/stories/2008/08/img_2500.jpg

This is what I bought for my White iPhone after dropping it once from about 2 feet, which left an unsightly mark on the lower left corner of the phone.

At first I was impressed by how snug the case was, and by how relatively slim and low profile it was. But after about 10 days use, I'm falling out of love with the thing and will probably not use it anymore.

While it is sorta thin, it certainly does add bulk; and when you remove the case and hold your phone again you really realize how nice the iPhone is, and how (relatively) not nice the case's plastic and size is.

And even though the case is pretty snug, mine (all of them, probably) isn't perfectly even. Meaning some parts are super flush with the phone, and other parts leave a noticeable gap. Not a big deal, but could leave room for particles to get in. Which brings me to my next point ...

I have scratches now! The scuff mark from the 2ft drop was one thing, but after using the case for 10 days, everything is covered in those little ******* scratches! The chrome, the back, everything. It sucks to be honest, and this is probably the single biggest reason for me not to use the case. Like ... what's the point? The phone would have been better protected just in my pocket over the past 10 days.

While it *may* protect the phone from large falls, it certainly isn't a "keep my product perfect" kind of case. So, in your day-to-day non-dropping usage, this thing will probably hurt more than it helps. At least for me, this was my experience.

So ... I mean ... short of possibly protecting the phone from potential high falls (if they occur), I fail to see value of this product. This strikes me more as a $30 accessory / decoration for people who like to "jazz up" their phones, moreso than anything else.

I got this case because it was the highest rated case on iLounge that wasn't ugly as hell. I realize now that site isn't really for people like me. The cases they gave A's and A+'s to, blow my mind. It's all overpriced, cheap crap.

I have to this product a 6/10 only because it isn't all that ugly (though it is a bit) and seems to fit ok-ish (though not really). But really ... this was just $30 that will end up in plastic form in one of my drawers.
