apple icon on my iMac 24" screen, doesn't it light up ever?

Hi,

1. doesn't the apple icon on my iMac's monitor ever light up? ie. when its sleeping or?

2. the manual says that when I hit the power button on the back of the monitor, a menu should appear and I can click on 'sleep' or 'shutdown'.
But when I press the button the system goes into sleep mode without asking me at all?

Your iMac is sleeping when you press the power button because that is what you have it set to do under preferences.
