When I got my new iPhone, the porting system was down (along with iTunes activation). They gave me a temp number and told me to wait until they call me to port the number. Anybody port their number successfully after the launch? Which number do I call to get this expedite this process?

I requested the port from O2 on Friday evening, and got a text on Saturday saying it would take place on the 15th (tomorrow). But they said it could take 48 hours! I have no idea why it takes so long...

It's normal it takes up to 48hrs.
In fact O2's official website mentions that.

Are you guys port your old numbers or a gold number from PAYG?

I ported my o2 pay&go number tonight.

Had to call o2 when i got home from the Apple store as the Apple sales guy said they were not allowed to port numbers at the minute in store?

o2 said it would take around 4 hours to port as it is a o2 to o2 port.

Its a sought after number that either spells something (0770iPhone > 0770474663)or is easy to remember like 0770123456

Lucky you got an O2 PAYG gold number.

Mine is T-mobile so it will approximately takes about 2-3 days to port it.

BTW, seriously what is the definition of "gold number"?

07XXXYYYZZZ?

Mine is 079AABBCCDD, doest it count?

I've also received a text, telling me that my number will be ported tomorrow, from Vodafone :)

Mine ported from T-Mobile in 48 hours, already working.

My o2 pay&go gold number ported to my new iPhone contract early this morning!
