I am anxiously waiting for a turn by turn software program which will make use of the GPS chip. I was on the freeway yesterday and clicked the map icon and it was interesting to see the blue dot moving along, but that doesn't really provide me any value.
I heard that Tom Tom has software ready to go for the new IPhone, but I also heard that Apple won't let them sell it. Not sure if that's true. I'm also wondering if Garmin and some of the other bigger names in GPS will be providing software soon.

Zero to none chance Garmin makes software for the iPhone. That would be 100% direct competition with their NuviPhone.

Wow, you guys are a little behind on the news aren't you:
http://gizmodo.com/5024018/telenav-confirms-iphone-in+car-navigation-app
Though it's not among the 522 awesome apps launching today, TeleNav (http://www.telenav.com/) will soon fill a pretty big hole by providing a turn-by-turn in-car GPS navigator app for the iPhone 3G, as we speculated. TeleNav confirmed to us today that its app will include full-color 3D moving maps and the turn-by-turn voice guidance and traffic-aware routing the iPhone Maps program itself is missing. TeleNav already makes decent GPS nav software for Sprint and AT&T phones, way better than Verizon's VZ Navigator. No word on price, but the good news is, it'd have to be available through the App Store, not as a subscription thing from AT&T.

Now this makes me want the 3G phone so I can actually have that built in GPS. The map is nice now but GPS would be much better.

I would imagine that you would almost need to have your IPhone plugged into the car charger when using the GPS mapping feature.

That's true!
