Just Returned My 3G iPhone

OK, I stood in line on Friday. I was a bit upset by the wait, but I lived through it. But, the 3g iPhone is NOT what I expected it to be.

We all know the problems that many people (including me) have had trouble with. Problems like battery life, sluggishness, MobileMe not syncing and diminished cell phone coverage.

So, I returned the 3g and went back to my original 8gb iPhone. Here's what I did if it helps anyone else to know...


1. went to the ATT store in the mall and told them what I wanted to do. They said go to the Apple storer (I originally bought it there on Fri.) and ask them to reverse the upgrade. So I did.

2. In the Apple store, they were dumbfounded that someone actually has the audacity to return this phone. It took them a few minutes to get setup to return my phone. I asked how to erase everything. The tech said do this...., so I did and it froze with him watching. Sigh... Anyway, they returned it and said that the upgrade will revert back in 24 hours.

3. Went back to the ATT store. They were very helpful. They told me the $18 activation will be reversed and I would need a new sim card. They replaced my sim card in store and I went home to activate my original iPhone.

4. Plugged the original iPhone into iTunes and it asked if I wanted to upgrade to 2.0, I hit cancel. Went through the prompts and it said the activation needed attention and would email me when ready. I left for a couple of hours.

5. Came back, plugged the original iPhone into iTunes and it activated right away. Made a test call and all was good.


So, now my next question is, if I upgrade to 2.0 on my original iPhone, how can I get back to 1.1.4?

if you're already thinking about reverting firmware I wouldn't upgrade in the first place. There are plenty of reports from gen1 owners that the 2.0 firmware is causing lots of sluggishness in tasks that were typically fast, like SMS.

That is weird, I absolutely love my 3G, it's the best thing I ever bought, OK there are a few little things that need ironing out, but I love it love it love it.

I'm thinking of returning my new 3G as well, and going back to my original iPhone. I'm giving the 3G a bit more of a chance though...I figure I have 30 days to decide.
