I was drooling over the 23" Cinema display in the Apple store today, and I wondered whether the video card in my 17" Powerbook would work with it. Could I just use the DVI out from the PB to mirror the screen onto the cinema display?? I wonder whether the setup of the screen would look identical to say, one hooked up to a G5.
Can it power such a large screen?

You can do more then mirror ... you can have dual display set up
the ATi 9600 Pro Mobile chip supports 2048 by 1536 external display resolution for use with a 23" cinema display through the build in DVI port on your 17" powerbook ...

Sure, without a hiccup. It'd be cool to set it up to do so. If you plug in an external mouse and keyboard, i think you can even have lid-closed operation. Check this page out: http://www.apple.com/displays/adapter.html/

forget closed lit operation
external keyboard, and mouse, 17" 1440 x 980 res on your power book, plus the second 23" displaying 1920x1200 ... imagine the real-estate.... *DROOLS*

I'm not sure if my 17" powerbook has that ATI video card. It was a first generation alubook - I think it might have that stupid gforce card.
Will it still work smoothly?

Well either way, i know that the Powerbooks in Rev A were designed to work in ALL the LCD displays Apple has, that included 23 - 17 models using the DVI output ., the 15" Ti also supported this, However the 12 " Rev a didn't, thats why the mini DVI was such a big deal in the REV B of that model

So I can't plug in any Apple display to my Rev. A 12" PowerBook G4?
What can I plug in? Any third party flat panel displays at all?

You can, but it will require an adapter, and will not be a digital signal.

Which is kinda of a waste of a perfectly good Apple display.
