Calendar questions??

I use the calendar alot at work and have some questions:
1. How do I mark a appointment completed or can I only delete it?
2. REALLY need a louder alarm, what work arounds are there?

On my Treo I was able to 'cross out' the letters in the Calendar. I don't see any other way than deleting the item. This is a drawback of not allowing developers to produce calendars. They would do a lot better job than iCal.
