I just installed a 3000 series RR card into my mac pro and was running a PM external 5 bay in raid5 (4 drives in arrray, 1 hot swap backup, which WAS used to rebuild array to due drive drop out)

Pro: card was stable, initialization of a 4TB array pretty quick (faster than the Apple raid card!), installation was easy. Array rebuilt twice with no problems
Con: No ability to "eject" without using web utility.

I'm sending mine back to newegg actually because the array I bought kept dropping drives (I think it was the external eSATA enclosure, not the card) and was not stable enough for me. It was also very noisy. I'm buying one of the new drobos.

Cheers and good luck. I thought this card was a good deal for the money.
