...iphone 3g generation 3 right!...
Wrong! The 3G is the generation of cellphone tech, not Apple's hardware.

Okay so I read that mess and I think I get the message. First the iPod Touch is currently on it's first generation which was released this last September. The iPhone 3G by the way refers to the cellphone technology used in the device. Uhhh.. as far as buying an iPod Touch usually the iPod lines are updated in September so thats a rough idea on the time line if you want to wait it's obviously not 100% certain. As far as how much space you need it depends 8Gb is usually enough for a good amount of content however, if you are watching a lot of video you might want to go for the 16Gb. If you actually want to buy the current generation I suppose 289 is an okay deal however I recommend buying from Apple as you get a real warranty and far better support and the 8Gb is only 10$ more than Wal-mart. I think that post makes sense, not sure though I am quite tired.
See guys just got to work with the guy. (Although I do have a massive headache now)

3G is a form of cellular technology, it does not refer to "third generation".
well there is already an itouch generation 2~~~
No there isn't. You're obviously confusing the 2.0 software update with an entirely new generation. A "generation" usually refers to an overhaul in the hardware side of things (and sometimes the software), for example the differences between the fifth and sixth generation iPod classic is very obvious. We're still on the first generation iPod touch; there is no second generation right now, let alone a third.

Well it's just bad luck if you got one the week before the updates, Apple updates their site warning if there is the possibility of a major upgrade. It's your decision if you want to wait, as has already been said the update usually occurs sometime in September.
one more thing i have more videos and pixtures than mp3 songs.... will an 8 gb. be enough how much will the wifi take up (how much memory) thanks in adv.
What? Haha! Wi Fi is a method of transferring data wirelessly, it takes up no space. What takes up space are the files cached onto the iPod when you view a web page (and they can be cleared like with any web browser). I have an 8GB touch and have 1300 music tracks and 16 videos (one a full-length movie and the rest all television episodes), as well as several photos and I still have half a GB left.
====sooo should i wait or should i order by the way wal-mart offers a 8gb itoouch for 289 with 2.0 installed in it is it worth it....?
I find that hard to believe, considering not even Apple stores have the iPod touch in stock with 2.0 installed, and they would be the first to stock them.

In the end it really is your decision. There is a chance it could be updated soon, but if you really want one now and you're happy with what it offers just get it. It's your choice.

Wow, I suggest searching next time so your post isn't doomed with 'EPIC FAIL' from the start. But seriously, this isn't new, and there's no basis of third generation touch speculation.
If there will be a refresh this year, it will happen in September with all the other iPods, just like every year. I could see possibly volume buttons, maybe the iPods will inherit the plastic back of the iPhone, I don't know, but nothing before September.

only realistic features I'd like to see added to the 2nd gen ipod are speakers like with the iPhone so u can listen to music without the need of speaker dock or earphones.
none of this stupid talk of camera, bluetooth ...... if you want camera and bluetooth use your mobile or get an iPhone

If I buy a new iPod Touch from Apple nowadays, do I get the 2.0 update for free or will I still have to pay the $9.99 (or whatever they charge over here in Europe)?

Probably not. I've read of several instances on various message boards where people have contacted Apple asking when iPods pre-loaded with 2.0 will become available, and some were apparently told "never". There was another guy who spent well over $800 at an Apple Store in one day, including a new iPod touch, and was even refused a voucher for $9.99 so he could buy the update. It seems right now that Apple just wants people to pay for it.

Yes.
How do I know? Experience with Apple and iPods. There is always a new model eventually.
When? We don't know.
What new features will it have? We don't know.
Will it have the 2.0 software on it? We don't know.
Will it cost less that the current Touch? We don't know.

ok this is much more easier to understand, now that all the spam and unhelpful replys are gone.
so there will be a new generation to the ipod touch sometime this year right..?
hmm most replies that i've gotten say there will but not until september. i am thinking of buying the ipod touch and try it out! in the mean time ill get used to it and experience it, while apple comes out with the new generation. uhmm target offers a 90 day money back guarantee so i'll get a refund in sept :) i know it seems wrong but ill just trade the old generation (the one now) with the new generation i hope it isnt as bad as it seems is it? apple will still get it's money and the old ipod touch!!

This is just plain wrong.
The 90 day money back guarantee is to allow someone to try a product, and at the end of 90 days, be able to get a refund if they no longer want the product. It is not to use it as you intend.
This concept strikes me as being very dishonest.

If a new iPod does come out in Sept and say I buy a 8GB refurbished this weekend and it has a warranty couldn't I send it in and they give me the new one?

Yes, a new first generation model.
They're smart enough to keep refurb stock of old products...

No, what I mean is this. I am ordering an 8GB refurbished tomorrow. Now, lets say that a newer version of the iPod touch comes out in November. Lets just say this Touch I have needed to be sent back for repairs or it is broken since it is still under warranty, or anyone elses iPod, would they replace it with that newer version of the touch or no?

I knew what you meant before. The answer is no. They keep stock of old products for cases like this. I saw someone get a 60GB iPod as a replacement from Apple the other day, almost two years after it was discontinued.

That's amazing 2 years after. Well, I guess they do have to send you back what you sent them.

Sadly, not once did I plan on swapping or say I was going to. I was merely asking a question that can obviously show up if someones iPod did get broken or damaged. If you read what I wrote I was asking if mine was broken or needed repairs what would they do.
Get off your high horse.

I'd REALLY like to see hardware buttons and a built in speaker. A voice recorder would be handy too-the rest of the improvements I'd like would be software based (ie full PIM, Office, search, and cut and paste capability).

Even if they allow you to do that, IMO that's really scamming the system. It's one thing to get it, realize it doesn't work for you, and send it back right away, but it's entirely different to buy it, keep it for months, and then send it back because there's a second generation out.
If they DO do a second generation model, I'd love to see some hardware buttons and an internal speaker. That would make it about perfect for me (and presumably the software will improve to continue getting more PDA like as we go along).

Well put. Completely agree.
One thing is for sure, the folks who plan to do this someday can nothing about others who do it someday to them when they own a business and take the loss. :)
Sometime payback can be a bitch. :D

A speaker would be very nice.
I do like how the Touch is proceeding to become more PDA like. I would like to see a model with a larger display.
