airport clean up/maintenance?

I am on an older airport(802.11 b w/ ethernet) using earthlink dsl and i am having problems with it working consistently. Are there some certain setting that i should change to make it work better? After the air port has been on for a couple of day's or so my computer will register that it is connected to a network but it will not have a status on the internet connection window. then when i go to the airport admin utility it can not find any networks to connect to.

Any insight? suggestions-
