Disk Partition Help

My wife owns an iMac 2.0Ghz.
The hard drive storing applications is almost maxed out.
Is there a way to partition the drive to make more space without reloading software?
Or do I need to partition the drive and make volumes from scratch?

Not sure I follow. Partitioning means breaking the drive into more than once piece, it doesn't create space.

The hard drive is partitioned into four volumes/sections.
The volume storing OSX and applications is almost full. I need to create more space for that volume to store more applications etc.
Is there a way to do that without wiping the drive clean and starting over?
I prefer not re-install software if that is possible.

Do a search on google for "resizing OS X partitions" and you will get a few hits with info, including this one (http://www.macgeekery.com/tips/cli/nondestructively_resizing_volumes).

Before you try, make up EVERYTHING, and make sure you have a bootable external drive or CD so you can recover. Even if this was easy, you should do that type of backup before making any major system changes.

Why so many partitions; you know you don't have to put your apps in the Applications folder, right?

If there's free space on those partitions, and you reformat them (if they aren't HFS+ already) to HFS+ (all macs' native file system), you can use them like your boot partition.

Good point. Just create another applications folder on another partition and move some apps there. :D
