watching dvd's on a computer is just a bit weird when your on a desk it's different on a laptop on a train or at school (genraly in a lesson)

I play them on my PowerBook, while sitting comfortable in the bed. The sound is just enough, the readability of the screen is also good enough for two persons not wide apart.

I have a 17" Widescreen iMac, so I tend to watch them on my computer due to the wide aspect ratio DVDs looking really good.

Pretty much all the time on the 17" PowerBook, its a great machine for watching up close with good headphones, and the speakers are OK if there's 2 of you;)

I don't think watching a desktop machine would be the same though, unless you could get a good chair in front of it.

i bought my 12PB with the intent of watching movies on it and on a tv via a RCA plug set. DVDs and divx style movies.

Watching movies on the 12" is a bit small tho.

I also have a 17 inch widescreen iMac and its not bad for watching movies. Since I don't have a DVD player hooked up to my TV yet, it's the best I can do.

Occasionally. I used to use my iBook to watch DVDs on my TV back before I got a real DVD player. I did use it to watch 2 movies when I was stuck in the Atlanta Airport for 8 hours.

The only time I use my iBook to watch DVDs now is when we go on vacation.

Too bad there wasn't an option for "I have a Lombard PowerBook".

I used to watch movies on it all the time when I was still an OS9 user. Now I can't bother myself to re-boot just to watch a DVD.
The Lombard doesn't give you the option to pick a System folder at startup, either, so you have to do it from the Preference pane.
I travel a lot, so watching movies on it was a good time killer.
Someday I'll be able to afford a new machine.:(

Don't do it that often. It's more comfortable on the couch, in front of the TV and DVD player.

Even still, my Mac is souped up to play DVDs well. I have a 23" Cinema, a Revolution sound card and JBL Creatures.

Occasionally, though, I'll make a DVD and play it on my Mac to compare it to what it looks like on TV.

At work we have a 23in cinema hooked to a g5 with a 250gb drive. People bring in movies and save them to the harddrive, this way we can watch what we want with bringing all our movies with us each day. we have at least 10-12 on there right now. We use dvd2one to save space too.

I work in an apple store not owned by apple.

Just wondering.. but do you think using something like Video Lan Client would work for playing DVD movies on models with DVD drives not supported by the DVD player in OS X? I don't have a Lombard to test it on, but I'd be interested in hearing the results if anyone tried it out.

Considering it's the only thing in my room with a DVD player, yep... now if I only had the money to spring on a Bluetooth USB adapter for my ol' G4 I could use my Sony Ericsson as a remote... :) Ahh, maybe someday...

VLC gets more useable with each release, but there are still dropped frames, freezes, and errors on a G3 400 Lombard.

all the time on my 17pb. while i'm working i like something on as background "noise", so it's either music, sports talk radio, or a movie. of course watching a movie in bed is always nice. kinda weird to use my laptop since i have a tv in the bedroom, but it's just fun that way.

My girl and I actually watch all our movies on my 17" + Soundsticks. In fact, we don't own a TV, so we usually watch 2-4 a week. Usually in bed, but often on the couch with the computer on the coffee table.

Works like a charm.

I voted, No, but have a DVD-ROM in my computer. Can't remember the last time that i viewed a DVD on my G4. We have a LCD projector, large wall screen, and surround sound in the living room. Sadly we don't even use that on a regular basis.

We don't have a TV or a VCR, so my PowerBook is it for mindless entertainment. We generally don't watch many movies, but when we do, the 15" powerbook is our only option.

My 3-year-old is surprisingly good at popping a 'Blues Clues' DVD into the slot, and then using the touch-pad mouse to select the episode he wants. The only problem is the peanut-butter (or more objectionable sticky substances) that often wind up on the screen after he points out the clues with his fingers on the screen.

Cheers

Since I got my PowerBook, I haven't used my DVD player for my TV in months. It must be lonely.

Watching them in the bed, with the earphones is just the perfect way to put me to sleep. :) With the Video-Out dongle, and some Audio Out cables, it's the perfect companion for a quick solution, if you're somewhere with no DVD player, yet you want to watch a movie with others.

I don't do it a lot but I've been having more trouble with my multi-disc player lately. Besides, the details on the computer monitor are so much better than my 8 year old t.v. with only a composite video input. The sound is poor on the computer though.

Actually I'm more apt to watch DIVX movies on my laptop. I've been sort of on the edge of whether or no I want to pick up season 1 of Smallville on DVD. I just D/Led season one last weekend and have been watching it. Its not bad and may be worth adding to my DVD collection. Oh and I have Parts I and II of Battlestar Galactica 2003 on my system that I've been watching. Those space battle scenes rock!

I dont like to like dvd's on my laptop because the veiwing angle of the screen isnt very great, and because the sound on the built in speakers is bad. The battery runs down very fast when watching a movie. I use a dvd player and a tv instead. If only me and 3 friends could watch the screen without glare... Maybe Apple will make new laptops with a wider veiwing angle on the screen.

It's funny this poll came up. I have my Ti book here with me and a copy of Guy Ritchie's "Snatch". Everybody is off for Christmas and it's dead slow at work, so I got the idea to bring it into work. Tomorrow I'm going to bring in Kevin Smith's Dogma... perfect for the holiday season! ;)

Indirectly, the fact that my 15" PowerBook can play DVDs helped me get my girlfriend.

Before we were dating, I would bring my notebook to her place at school so that we could watch her favourite DVDs (she had the movies, but no DVD player.)

Dogma as a Christmas movie, hmmm.... ;)

I actually don't yet own a stand-alone DVD player, so my PowerBook is the only option I have for DVDs. When my neighbor's PS2 was unable to play two discs of the Escaflowne series (why, we have no idea) I just grabbed my TiBook, brought it over, and we hooked it up to the TV. Worked great, though I couldn't figure out how to span and not mirror the TV as a second display. And for solo viewing that won't annoy your roommate, there's nothing like the PowerBook and a good set of headphones.

I mostly watch EyeTV recordings on my 12" iBook and occasionally DVDs when higher A/V quality isn't necessary for enjoyment.

My Daughter and my powerbook G4 12" got along great on a 5 hr flight to Phoenix from Raleigh, NC.

Then charged it up again at the airport in Phoenix and the 3.5hr flight to portland went by rather nicely.

Unfortunately on the way back though we didn't have a long layover like the way out and was unable to get the PB charged up enough for her taste.

She let me know for about an hour of the 5 hr flight how bad that was. Life is rough without Rolie Polie Olie or Elmo on the old Powerbook.

Otherwise, I watch DVDs on my 57" Widescreen at home.

I watch on the plane or on long car rides, otherwise I just watch on my TV sitting on a comfy couch...ahh, so much better than the airplane seats.

I have a dual 1 Ghz G4 with superdrive and a not too impressive 17" apple LCD. I've watched 2 dvd's in the past year. I don't think the 17" display with 1280x1024 resolution is enough working space though. I wonder how I'll do with a 1024x768 12" PowerBook?

No, but I don't have a combo or super drive.

But I used to, and I only watched 2 or 3 DVDs in the 3 or 4 months I had the computer.

I have a 17-inch iMac .. am I the only one whose picture is obviously stretched (blocky) while eatching a movie?

yes, it's just you, or your iMac. I dunno. Get you eyes checked out, then try to change the DVD playback settings on the iMac. I d/n where it would be though.

With the New Year I am certainly hoping to view more DVD movies on my G4. I have a large collection, sadly the majority haven't been viewed.

Although I have the nice 17" iMac widescreen, which would suffice for DVD playback, I have my Mac hooked up to my TV through S-Video, and just watch everything on there. Although my iMac's screen is nice, 50" beats out 17" anyday of the week!

I have 2 sons, one is 5 and the other soon to be 2. We also do not have a TV in the house. All of our video and DVDs are viewed on a 17" widescreen iMac.

My 5 year old has his own desktop with password in Panther, plays games goes on the internet.

It would be nice to have a g5 with dual displays so they could watch a movie while I can work.

I.

Do you just go through old polls and post one-line responses without much substance? This is about the 7th time I've seen a post like this from ya! Bumping up the posts so that you bump up your member ranking? ;) :p

That's how i though the polls to work. If you note, this is my first day.

But if I was just bing absolutely mindless, would I return? Yeah, I would , but not to rush into the conclusion that this was the case.
