Can iCal show upcoming appointments on home screen?

I'm a WM user and I'm used to seeing my upcoming appointments on my home screen.

Is there a way for iCal to show a count on the icon like mail or SMS? Or is there a way to show the next 1 or 2 appointments on the home screen/lock screen?

Is the only way to see the next appt is to go into ical itself?

Yes.

The only way to do what you're asking is to Jailbreak the phone and install either Intelliscreen or iToday. And AFAIK neither shows a badge on the iCal icon.
 
Wow, that sucks. Thanks guys. But this is a big downer for me. Oh well. I still like it better overall compared to my WM phones.
 
If you use Exchange I think new meeting invites get a badge icon on iCal, but other than that, nothing.
