Changing Alert Sounds?

Is there a way to put custom sounds for the alerts sounds like mail, text message, etc.? I couldn't find any. Lame.

And why the heck are these alert sounds so much lower than the rest of the iphone sounds? Unless my iphone is out of my pocket and right in front of me I
can never hear those sounds!

thirdly...when I'm checking mail and it finds some, it's a 50/50 chance that it will even make a sound. wierd.

Unfortunately, there is no way to put custom alerts for mail, texts, etc. You can only choose one of the options Apple provides.

I have the same thing as far as the 50-50 sound, except mine is with texts. sometimes it clings and sometimes not... hm.......

pretty lame that you can't change those sounds, i can't figure the
reasoning in that, but at least they could bump up the volume (for the times it does make sound).

While this is true for now, the iPhone 3G has now been jailbroken, and therefore someone will find a way to edit the sounds shortly.

On the old iPhone, the method was to connect via SSH, and replace the .caf file with one of your own (with the exact same name). While this was imperfect (you had to remember that "tri-tone" was actually The Imperial March, etc...), hopefully the iPhone 3G will have a better way...

Well, no offense, but giving up the app store for THIS reason is pretty lame. I'm sure some people will have a good reason to jail break their phone, but you give up more now than you did with the first phone. I don't think "changing the mail sound" is going to be a big reason for many people.

You don't necessarily have to give up the App store.... just Jailbreak the phone after you get whatever apps you want... and you can always RE-Jailbreak your phone if a new App comes out that you like...

Also, once it has been Jailbroken, people will find ways to write apps that can do the alert changes for you WITHOUT you having to jailbreak your own phone - actually, for anyone who paid $99 to be a developer for the iPhone, they could do it now...

The SDK does not allow developers access to the iPhone OS (core) or more accurately anything outside of the developers application. Until Apple changes that, these types of utilities will never be in the App store and will always require unsanctioned apps on a jailbroken device.
