This is the one function I like about Outlook XP (I'm shortly switching to Mac). When a message arrives in the inbox, I can have it automatically sent to any folder I set up and highlighted to let me know that folder contains a new message. Can OS X's Mail application do this sort of thing? (I know it screens Junk mail, which is certainly nice)...

what would be the requirements for said message to be sent to a particular folder?

you can certainly set up an action so that for instance any messages from john@porn.com are sent to a folder entitled "not porn". they are called rules in mail and you can set up as many as you want (probably some limit... but nothing too low).

i also have some rules set up so that messages from certain people are color coded, etc...

anything more specific you wondered about?

Mail has the ability to sort email by to, from, subject, keywords, and then can sort those emails into particular folders, including your junk. You can also set certain actions including highlights and sounds, and even set up scripts.
Mail has become a very useful program, and I think it is much easier to use than Outlook.

Thanks for the responses! Sounds like Mail might be all I need. It feels somehow sacreligious after switching from PC to Mac to import such a PC-like program as Microsoft Office, so it would be nice not to have to....

I use this function in Mail all the time.
Works nicely.
The Junk mail feature also works very well; I get at most 1 or 2 spams in my inbox each day; the the other 150 end up[ in the junk folder.

Don't forget the message threading either; they did a great job onn this. If you're a member of a mailing list that involves numerous mails on the same topic, you can have Mail move them to the right folder and group them there by subject. Click on a grouped subject thread and you get a list of all the messages in that thread with a cue whether you've read them or not. Open one and you can use the mouse to scroll it or the up/down keys to move through the messages.

Mail does a nicer job of doing this than Outlook ever did. Great program. I have over thirty customer folders, contact folders, personal folders all with mail rules to manage them. Works great.
