I'm looking for a combodrive to buy for my old G4 and was wondering which label Apple uses for their CD-RW/DVD-drives.

Apple normally uses Pioneer drives, but a system profiler search in the G5 at my Local CompUSA said that the drive was a Sony...

Pioneer and Sony are the makers for the DVD-R/W drives, not the combo drives. They might use Mat****a drives, like in the Powerbooks, not sure though. Check www.xlr8yourmac.com, they might have something on that.

Do you need the DVD reading function or just the CD burning? If you only need a burner the Lite-on 52327S is fully supported by anything above 10.2.8 including Panther. You'll need to take the tray front off it though as otherwise it won't clear the cutouts on the MDD drive bays. These drives are really cheap. Amazon in the UK have them for £25. Apparently they have been seen for $19 after rebate in the US.

I have one - works great.

If you need a DVD/CDRW then there is a fully supported LG drive but I can't recall it's model number. Check xlr8yourmac.com
