Help: Appleworks and .doc don't play well on 12" PB

I am running AW 6.2.7 on rev.a 12" PB. Try to open .doc file and AW crashes. Also running AW 6.2.7 on a G3 iBook and same document opens fine using maclink plus. I thought maybe maclink didn't install somehow on the PB. ran a search and the only extention for it is in system folder 9, but it's the same on the iBook, so I don't know what the difference is. Any ideas?
Also, if I own my own copy of AW is it still illegal for me to copy it from another computer if mine isn't working right? (the iBook isn't mine)

Try opening the .doc in TextEdit.

yeah that works with a bunch of strange symbols and stuff. Any way to match the formatting I had on my word document with TextEdit, or at least have just text without all the extra symbols? Would still like to know why a seemingly identical instal of AW doesn't do the same thing.
