iPod touch Audio Out?

I want to make a video or two on some Apps. I was wondering if its possible to take an audio cable I have (commonly used for speakers or to connect a monitor with speakers to a computer) with the Touch? Theyre both the 3.5mm (or whatnot) standard for iPods and MP3s, so would it work if I took one side, plugged it into my ipod touch, and the other in my Mac, and lets say tried to get the audio of the Touch via Garageband?
