Here is the short story:
9am: Bought 2 new iphone 3Gs from the Apple Store today.
It took just 15 minutes from entering the store to setup & paying
(they did not even have to open the two boxes, jsut scan the UPCs on the back of the box!)
11am: Came home, synced them both up and they were working!
Wow going from 8gb to 16gb is good!
Noon: Wiped the data, cleaned, and reboxed the 2 old iPhones.
1:30pm: Sold BOTH the old iPhones to two different people from Craigslist for $300 EACH.
Met them within 10 minutes of each other up the block at a bookstore (1 trip shopping of me!)
2pm: Deposited the $600 cash at the ATM.
___________________________________
Paid $299 + tax = $317.24 x 2 = $634.48
Sold $300 x 2 = $600
Total Net paid = $34.48
I think $34.48 (plus a one year extension of our contact) is a good ROI for:
3G
Brand new batteries!
8gb MORE space

Nice one :)
Getting $300 for an 8GB 1st Gen is pretty good - I'm guessing they were in pristine condition?

how is that getting a free iPhone? You just covered the cost by selling the old one.

I sold my first-gen 8GB iPhone for $406 on eBay :p. The auction ended on the night of July 11, BTW.

Im surprised you didnt sell on ebay..those things are selling for 500 a pop

Come on! You have GOT to be kidding with these "not free' comments - LOL

JEALOUS?
I was just sharing some good news. :)
I basically "TRADED" two YEAR-OLD (batteries have been used HEAVY for a full year) iPhones for just the price of the tax!
$34 is a great deal for (TWO new 3G iPhones):
NEW BATTERIES!!

8GB MORE space

You were the only person with a decent comment. Thank you. :D
OK - so not "technically" free.
I basically "traded" 2, year-old 8gb 2.5g iPhones, for 2 - NEW 16gb 3g iPhones.
One was in very good physical condition (my wifes) and one (mine, no case) had a dent and 2 scratches on the top, in the metal back. Sounds like I'm talking about us and not the phones - lol.

Lame - if you OWNED your own home and it increased in value the same amount you spent on mortgage for the year - maybe your logic would be relevant.

how is that getting free rent, free utilities and free food? You just covered the cost by putting your check in the bank and spending it.

What's with these freaking 1st gen's going for so much? I was hoping to pick one up for pocket change after the switch over because the market would be flooded with them. Haven't seen one yet for less than $250. We need to get all those upgraders on e-bay and flood the market!!!

Not sure why you paid $416 for a $299 iPhone? No contract???
BTW - The difference between your figures is $1, not $99.

Typo, maybe? I assume a 16GB w/tax would be $316, which would make a $99 difference.

I think I got lucky because of timing. It's the first week. I made the switch NOW because of this. I'm sure as a month or so goes by, the 1st gen iPhones will drop in price. Both people I sold to for $300 each today said are going to use the iPhone on their existing t-mobile account.
For us it's worth it because we planning on sticking with our unlimited AT&T plans anyway, so what's another year. We'll see if the $15 each or so extra per month is worth it ($10 for 3G + $5 for 200 SMS). I figured with the new technology, plus the NEW batteries, for basically a "swap" in hardware - I better jump on it!

This thread really demonstrates the sad road that the Macrumors Forums have begun to take. Reading everyones replys shooting the OP down on silly technicalities is childish and pathetic.
Seeing more and more of this just makes me want to leave the forums completely. Not like that would bother anyone anyhow as no one would care.
Im happy for the OP, nice job, hope you enjoy your new 3G iPhones :apple:

I got $406 on eBay, on the night of July 11. You did pretty well on Craigslist, but how come you chose Craigslist over eBay? We got $100 in early adopter credit.

WOW! $400+ IS REALLY GOOD!!!
I've done really well selling locally on Craigslist. I like the no fee, no shipping, etc... I meet at a bookstore 1/4 mile form my house, done.
I've sold these items and more on CL:
G5 Quad
Sleep-sound travel alarm clock
Headphones/earbuds
30" ACD
20" ACD
MacBookPro
Canon 5D and complete pro-photography kit
Next week I'm selling a (red) Sanyo Xacti HD700 video camera.

I did the same thing but actually sold mine for $400 on craigslist on the week of the 11th. I was getting so many hits right away that finally, a guy came to my work and gave me $200 for a deposit and said he would give me the other $200 on Friday when he picks up the phone. It worked out great for me as did many others
