Debugging e-mail problems

I'm trying to collect e-mail from four sources, and I'm having little luck.

GMail worked instantly. That's one.

Sympatico, a POP server, doesn't work. It does something and no errors are reported, but nothing happens, there's no mail in the inbox.

The same thing happens with my work Exchange server. It syncs, there's no error, but no mail either.

The iPhone says I can't use Hotmail at all, so I'm just going to dump that account.

So does anyone have any advice for debugging the other two accounts? Is there a log I can view?

Collecting mail via Gmail account on my iPhone worked fine till today.

Mail is not coming in for hours while loads of mail is dropping in my inbox on my Gmail account on my iMac

I did not change any settings

I see it searching for email but it cannot find any new emails which should be there looking at my iMac. WIFI connection is strong by the way

WHAT CAN POSSIBLY IS WRONG WITH IT ???
IS THIS A COMMON BUG ?
